How can I parlay my mistakes and deceit into a multi-million dollar book deal.... hmmmm.....
Unfair!

Coming soon to the fiction aisle...

According to excerpts from the Observer, Blair said his deceptions stemmed from personal problems.

"I was either going to kill myself or I was going to kill the journalist persona," he said. "So Jayson Blair the human being could live, Jayson Blair the journalist had to die."

Riiiight

...here ya go...

I hate the Columbus Dispatch b/c they only let subscribers view their online articles. . is the New York Times like this too? If it is, then it sucks as well.

"So Jayson Blair the human being could live, Jayson Blair the journalist had to die."

What a drama queen.

2003-05-21 09:14:59 AM
Jayson Blair the journalist never existed - so how could he "die"
?

2003-05-21 09:15:34 AM
The first person that I see reading this dickhead's book is gonna get my shoe in their colon.

2003-05-21 09:15:54 AM
I think he picked the wrong entity to kill off.

Gee, I wonder if I could get a book deal for all the times I could have lied at work but didn't.

2003-05-21 09:16:18 AM
Well, thank the lord that Jayson Blair the human being will live, I mean, look at what great things he could bring to the rest of humanity.

Hooray for humans and all they do for humanity.

What an age we live in, huh folks?

#1) Affirmative action gets this moron a reporter job, even though he has ZERO credentials.

#2) He steals articles from other reporters, and releases them as his own, repeatedly.

#3) Quotes sources that don't exist, and on many occaisons prints outright lies (I know, all reporters do this).

#4) The Times, with egg all over its face, fires his ass.

#5) Guy signs big-money, tell-all book deal, due to his lying, stealing, and copying other's work.

Gimme a friggen break.

2003-05-21 09:17:12 AM
The Washington Post had a good article about this guy today, too. What a jerk. I love his backpeddling: "Oh, I fooled them!" Like he was trying to fool them. You got caught, buddy! Seems to me his 'plan' to fool them failed. He also plays the race card in a pretty revolting way.

2003-05-21 09:17:51 AM
jerkus Maximus

2003-05-21 09:17:57 AM
Oh, I get it, he's the victim here. We should pity him, because he had personal problems.

2003-05-21 09:18:57 AM
Has the Times come out and admitted that they put him in a position that he wasn't qualified to do as a result of affirmative action? Curious....

2003-05-21 09:19:01 AM
Singlehandily setting back race-relations 100 years.. he's the new hero of the KKK..

He should go bar hopping with Mike Barnicle..

2003-05-21 09:20:12 AM
The NYT better have a team of lawyers getting ready to sue his ass bigtime.

2003-05-21 09:21:21 AM
book deal? movie deal? for what???

2003-05-21 09:21:48 AM
Why is it that when an african-american gets canned for lying/cheating/whatever on the job, it's affirmative action that's to blame?

Whenever a white male gets canned for lying/cheating/whatever on the job, do we blame it on the subtle system of bias that put them there? No.

2003-05-21 09:21:59 AM
I don't see how race is an issue here. From what this article says, the guy very well might just be a headcase. I don't know if you're aware, but headcases come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

Although I guess if this incident has taught us one thing, it's that it's not hard for the media to be blatently wrong.

2003-05-21 09:22:18 AM
"So Jayson Blair the human being could live, Jayson Blair the journalist had to die."

sounds like fight club..the journalist entity still lives within him...Jason Blair the humaoid must die or appear dead at least to Jason the b.s journalist

gun+head+pull trigger="Jason the Journalist"dead..as for Jason the human..well..depends where you put the bullet

2003-05-21 09:22:22 AM
What a smug piece-o-shiat. And it pisses me off that he will get a book deal and make tons of cash for being a farking liar.

How long before he gets to join Oprah on the book club?

What a twerp.

*feelin' ornery today*

2003-05-21 09:26:19 AM
with the way hollywood is...

/movie deals for everyone..step right up tell your story!..even if it is made up...or stolen and forged from the guy behind you

2003-05-21 09:26:41 AM
Modernhamlet I have to agree with you...it does seem that way in general, and it's stupid. I don't know the circumstances of his being hired, but I think I heard somewhere that he was hired because of a need to get more black reporters on staff there...

2003-05-21 09:27:27 AM
this guy is a certified chode

2003-05-21 09:28:29 AM
I just hate that guy!

2003-05-21 09:28:55 AM
Is that how you spell chode? I always thought it would be c-h-o-a-d. I've never seen it written, though, so I'm probably wrong...

...What exactly is the meaning of that, anyway?

2003-05-21 09:30:02 AM
"I guess i'm the only one that finds this whole situation hilarious?"

I find much of it funny too but at the core of it, it really does dishearten me. It reminds me of the time I was covering the sniper shootings in Maryland.

2003-05-21 09:31:11 AM
Ah, here ya go...

choad

/chohd/ n. Synonym for `penis' used in alt.tasteless and
popularized by the denizens thereof. They say: "We think maybe it's
from Middle English but we're all too damned lazy to check the OED."
[I'm not. It isn't. --ESR] This term is alleged to have been
inherited through 1960s underground comics, and to have been
recently sighted in the Beavis and Butthead cartoons. Speakers of
the Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati languages have confirmed that
`choad' is in fact an Indian vernacular word equivalent to `fark';
it is therefore likely to have entered English slang via the British
Raj.

2003-05-21 09:31:23 AM
Actually, now that I think about it, the book could be pure comedy gold. Think of how much more material he has to rip off!

"It was the best at The Times, it was the worst at The Times."

"While interviewing Captain Nemo aboard the Nautilus, we were attacked by a giant squid. I bravely rushed to help, and eventually saved Nemo himself."

"My time spent at the airbase was quite a learning experience. I had these great friends named Yossarian and Dunbar, even though Yossarian seemed to be depressed most of the time."

2003-05-21 09:32:20 AM
I don't think the human lived either.

2003-05-21 09:32:24 AM
Affirmative action is to blame here IMHO. And race has nothing to do with it. This man was put ahead of many, better qualified black reporters, as well as white reporters. If the job was filled based on qualifications, there is a good chance that an excellent black reporter would have received the job, and this never would have happened.

2003-05-21 09:32:25 AM
HanZnSolo,

From what little I know, he was indeed hired through affirmative action. I was merely pointing out that blaming affirmative action (ever notice how the success stories don't get mentioned much?) is stupid, particularly when the blame can be placed very clearly on:

1. Him. As Byrd said: headcases come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

2. The editorial and managerial staff. The "paper of record" REALLY should have better processes for ensuring good journalism.

2003-05-21 09:33:06 AM
Modernhamlet
fair and balanced. yup.

To what are you referring? This story appears on fox but he was not employed by them. So, to whom are you directing your sarcasm?

2003-05-21 09:34:33 AM
"It was the best at The Times, it was the worst at The Times."

Ach and arg. I want you to go to your room and think about what you've done. And no dessert for you young man. ;-)

2003-05-21 09:34:45 AM
White people pull this stunt too (witness Stephen Glass). The reason that people are talking about race in this case is because he would have never been put in the job in the first place if it weren't for policies that put people in positions for reasons other than merit. There's one person on the Times' staff who agrees with me: editor Howell Raines

You have a right to ask if I, as a white man from Alabama, with those convictions, gave him one chance too many by not stopping his appointment to the sniper team. When I look into my heart for the truth of that, the answer is yes."

Straight from the horse's mouth. Race-based policies allowed this to happen.

2003-05-21 09:36:03 AM
Probably could use an for coming from

2003-05-21 09:36:44 AM
the NYT should feel pretty stupid. they're the ones who empowered Blair to glean riches from his misdeeds by making such a spectacle of his firing. meanwhile, the editors there have taken very little responsibility. they make it sound like the guy was a farking liar savant or some shiat when, in actuality, he was just a lazy, self-obsessed coke head.

2003-05-21 09:37:10 AM
The first rule of the New York Times is, you do not
talk about the New York Times.

The second rule of the New York Times is, you DO NOT talk about the New York Times.

2003-05-21 09:37:12 AM
Modernhamlet

Okay, you're right there. I guess if the editorial and managerial staff weren't so lazy, they could've either:

a.) Found ANOTHER black reporter to do the job, someone with integrity -- people with integrity come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, too.

b.) Fired the jackass way back in the day before he started getting out of hand.

I think it probably has a lot to do with the inherent disorganization in most large companies. There's a complete idiot in middle management overseeing the people below him (many of them actually being 10x smarter than he is), and so lots of stupid crap happens that shouldn't.

I'm neither for nor against affirmative action, but bad management is the problem in this situation.

2003-05-21 09:37:20 AM
Wanker poser gets job for which he's unqualified, blows it then writes book. News at 11.

2003-05-21 09:38:43 AM
Ach and arg. I want you to go to your room and think about what you've done. And no dessert for you young man. ;-)

Yea, yea, ok. But it was worth it.
