I always wondered where that whole Zombie Eat Brains thing came from.

Awesome. Definitely a bookmark. How many people owe their careers to Romero it's hard to know, but definitely a lot. He's a national treasure.

That man is responsible for many a sleepless night...I saw "Night" when I was 10 on "Shock Theater".

I still have nightmares sometimes...30 years later.

/I love zombie movies.

He's lying...he's become one of them.

They eat brains because the yummy neurons keep the dead cells ticking over.

Everyone knows this.

Romero is just being coy.

I'm guessing from Return of the Living Dead.

The Return of the Living Dead zombies were definitely after brainsss. They smelled spicy and made the pain of being dead go away for a while, according to the zombies.

I think they had a zombie strapped to a table and she said it was to ease the pain of death or something.

FTA - Well, what about gorging on human flesh? Your zombies do that, right?

Definitely. (Laughs.)

Where does that come from? Is it like when poor people eat too much fast food because it's cheap and it gives them an endorphin rush and helps them forget their troubles?

I don't know. I suppose the ultimate question is, do they sh*t? (Laughs.) I have theories about it, but I don't know.

Now there's a question I never thought of.

yeah George, the whole "brains" thing is from Return of the Living Dead. You know, that movie that is still better than everything that you have made past Dawn of the Dead.

/yes, folks, in Return of the Living Dead, all that the zombies are interested in is BRAINS!

Return of the Living Dead, definitely.

Honestly, considering how long ago Return of the Living Dead was, I'd think most people shouting "BRAAAAINS!" are thinking of the Simpsons episode.

This: Honestly, considering how long ago Return of the Living Dead was, I'd think most people shouting "BRAAAAINS!" are thinking of the Simpsons episode.

you are wrong. if you are a zombie fan AT ALL, you have seen Return of the Living Dead. The whole "brains" shtick came from that movie (and the sequels).

2010-05-28 09:53:30 AM
Quick and dirty. Romero came up with the slow dead zombie that can be killed with a bullet to the brainpan. Another guy came up with the "Return series" which made zombies nigh invincible and hungry for brains. People have since mixed and matched the two branches.

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Return of the Living Dead, definitely.

Favorite movie of my teenhood, I think.

My Romero autograph says "Stay Scared, George Romero"

I have the "Plutonium" edition of "Return of the Living Dead".The voice over commentary says it was made by John Russo, Romero's partner from the original "Night of the Living Dead". After that movie they split the franchise with Russo getting custody of the term "living dead" and Romero just using "dead" in the titles. The eating brains (to lessen the pain of rotting) is all Russo's idea.

this. i think most people don't even realize that George DID NOT make Return of the Living Dead.

Return of the Living Dead was one of the first zombie movies I ever saw (I saw it in the theater when it was released...yeah, I'm old). Great movie, very funny. For a long time it was next to impossible to find it on VHS or DVD, but they finally released it a few years ago and I snapped it up. I was worried it wasn't going to be good after so many years, but it's still awesome as ever.

One of the best lines out of any horror film...or any film at all...is still, "Send more paramedics!"

George Romero doesn't understand that people mistake "Return of the Living Dead" for one of his films? Come on. That's just intentionally obtuse. It's like Jimmy Cagney seeing a bunch of kids going "You dirty rat!" and asking "Hey, who are they doing? Because I never said that!"

Pics or it didn't happen

One Bad Apple it was made "executive produced" by John Russo, Romero's partner from the original "Night of the Living Dead". After that movie they split the franchise with Russo getting custody of the term "living dead" and Romero just using "dead" in the titles. The eating brains (to lessen the pain of rotting) is all Russo's DAN O'BANNON'S(the guy who came up with "Alien" & "Blue Thunder"-he said Tobe Hooper cooked up with the "NOLD-Really-Happend" angle) idea.

I've been watching the Rifftrax version of "The Night of the Living Dead". It's really a shockingly dull mvie for most of it. The Rifftrax is pretty funny.

Yeah, obviously. What's going on is, he thinks it's stupid that everyone talks to him about zombies eating brains when this wasn't in any of his movies, so he's pretending he doesn't know where it comes from to try to highlight the stupidity of the fans or interviewers in question.

You'd think if someone was a fan of Romero's movies, they could at least bother to pay attention to the difference between his movies and those made by other people.

actually in the book world war z that was briefly covered... zombies who had been dead long enough had eaten enough flesh to force it through their intestines and come out the other end (didn't sound like they shiat so much as they still have a finite space inside their digestive tract).

It's been a while since I've listened to the commentary track. Yep, it's O'Bannon I was thinking of.

On the '79 "Dawn of the Dead" commentary Romero spends 10 minutes or so lamenting the fact that this movie cemented him as the zombie movie guy and he desperately wants to direct a romantic comedy but nobody will let him.

then he should have been the genius to come up with the idea behind "Shaun of the Dead".

Old enough to know better: Big zombie fan. The whole 'brains' thing just makes me nuts.

Same here.

Now I happen to enjoy Return of the Living Dead. That said, I am offended when people start with the whole brains thing. Yes, zombies will eat brain, but it's simply an undeniable fact that they don't prefer brains to other body parts.

no, it's a simple fact that there are separate zombie universes. in one of those universes, the zombies prefer brains.

In a big way he was. So much in fact that when Romero made "Land of the Dead" Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have a cameo.

Opening sequence, chained to a swingset, have your picture taken with a zombie.

he inspired it, of course, but he did not come up with the idea. that was my point.

I agree that Romero is being intentionally obtuse. That said, Return of the Living Dead (the one where "brains" comes from), is probably my favorite zombie movie of all time with Shaun of the Dead right behind it. Romero's great, and his movies are definitely more "realistic", but I like the knockoffs better.

2010-05-28 12:16:39 PM
The line of dialogue in Return of The Living Dead, where one of the characters says "hey, you ever see that move, Night of the Living Dead" - and then goes on to describe the movie - that's what we call in poker a "tell".

2010-05-28 12:31:56 PM
Classic Romero zombies hunger for flesh. They are still the most common kind of zombie in fiction. The alternate continuity of "Living Dead" made it brains, which is at this point more used in parody.
