You're right, Subby! I do want one to go right next to my lawn jockey.

That's not racist. It's just a slight variant of the bobblehead, and it actually looks quite a bit like him. Wouldn't mind having one myself, for shiats and giggles.

Not racist. This is one of those 'how can I in any way find something vagualy similar to this that is offensive so that I can claim this is racist' scenarios. They should come out with a Chase Utley one so that people will stop crying.

This will end well.

I'll be over here watching.

2010-05-27 11:08:25 AM
Racist? Because at one point there were "lawn jockey" statues that caricatured black people, and because garden gnomes also sit in the yard and this one happens to represent a black baseball player? Hardly. It's a damn garden gnome. It doesn't play off any racial stereotypes.

Lawn gnomes > bobbleheads

I hope this trend catches on.

Aside from the gnomey features (which are just weird, not offensive) it just...looks decently like him. I don't see why it would be something to be upset about. The lawn jockey things on the other hand, holy living f*ck. It's amazing to compare what wasn't seen as racist then to some modern examples of what is considered racist now

I agree. If I can't have a Jayson Werth blow up doll, then I want one of these...wait

Damn. I thought this was about B.J. Novak's character in the U.S. version of The Office.

/Better than the Dwight Schrute bobblehead.

In fact, this is "post-racial" (stupid term) because its a twist on the normally-white garden gnome imagery. Anyone who sees it as racist just has racism on the brain w/the lawn jockey thing.

The woman in the article seems to be actually handling this well, and succeeded (IMHO) in both discussing the possible implications and then lampooning them.

I want one.

Always there's a columnist's job for somebody to be Overly Farking Touchy About Race.

She'd only have a point if every single gnome in the series from here until eternity are all black ballplayers.

Somebody from the ballclub needs to tell the lady that the next gnome is going to be Greg Luzinski, so she can take her grievance bullshiat someplace else.

I don't even care about the Phillies and I want one. That would look badass next to my azaleas.

If you get one, and get Ryan howard to sign it, then it will be worth a couple of thousand in 15 or 20 years.

Less than 10% of people answering the poll agree with the writer. Let's see if Farkers can get that down to 5%.

Its a gnome brandishing a bat though. And Garden Gnomes are from Germany. You put that thing in your front yard and every Frenchy in your area will be showing up to surrender.Plus Drew Curtis will probably show up on your lawn drunk at three AM drunk and screaming to see the Gnome cuz it might be his gnome.drunk

They had to make the Ryan Howard garden gnome black? That is racist, why can't the Ryan Howard garden gnome be white?

Way to keep the black man down AGAIN whitey.

A Ben Roethlisberger duct tape and trojans dating kit.

He's big in Pennsylvania

I've been robbed by black garden gnomes twice in the last month, so my opinion of this is bound to be very biased.

My garden cart was also found on cement blocks.

2010-05-27 12:05:28 PM
I thought similar things about my brother in law's Magic Johnson Christmas tree ornament. The hanger thingie was attached to the upper back, between the shoulders. I saw it at his house and said "ummm, you realize you have a black man hanging by his neck from a tree, don't you?" Strangely, he didn't see it that way. Also, I'm not invited for Christmas anymore.

Instead of the poll (which is at 87% "Not offensive") how about rewording the question?

"Hey, Ryan Howard! What do YOU think of the Garden Gnome?"

If he thinks it's offensive, THEN write your story. Until then STFU and stop trying to start trouble.

2010-05-27 12:46:29 PM
With the week the Phillies are having, I'd say it's the gnome community that should be offended.

This garden gnome thing seems to be catching on. I know the Jays have played in two road games where they were given away. Apparently last week in Arizona (IIRC), they ran out and the Jays announcers thought there was going to be a riot when they played a gnome race or something on the stadium jumbotron.

To call this racist is ridiculous. Hopefully it doesn't discourage other teams from doing lawn gnome giveaways, because I want one.

You could always send her an email. Her email is listed at the bottom of the article.

While you are it, find someone who can kick her in the cunf. Talk about grasping at straws to try to find some controversy.

FTA: Add food and parking, and a game at Citizens Bank Park can easily set a family of four back $500.

Whaaat? I don't think so.

I thought it was funny, as did my father when I texted him about it... I suggested that if we went to the game as a family, we could get four of them (and my poor brother would be the odd one out), and I'll have just gotten home from my summer job only a week before.

2010-05-27 01:30:36 PM
I'm going. It's the best giveaway ever. Better than the Doc bobblehead.

Wow, must be for a family of fatasses sitting close to the field...

/Will probably be helping to pay for my family to go to a game this summer
//Usually go for my birthday, but my dad's been sick, so we didn't for either my 20th or 21st

I'm going to that game. Gotta gets me some gnome.

Maybe. Four good seats would go for $240. If they all took separate cars, that'd be $60 to park. And if each family member bought four bowls of Harry the K's Chili, that'd cost them $176. If the all got foam #1 fingers, that probably would put them over $500.

Ryan Howard PROTECTS THIS GARDEN!!!!!!

2010-05-27 02:15:38 PM
That is the most racist thing I have ever seen. The person who first came up with this idea is obviously a long standing member of the KKK. The company behind manufacturing the actual Garden Gnome hates every single person with skin color darker than tan.

The Reading Phillies are just a despicable organization for being a part of this.
