Watching in horror, Roy's wife Catherine and 11-year-old nephew Michael dialled 999 before a helicopter from RAF Boulmer arrived to airlift him to Newcastle General Hospital from the site, just south of Hexham in Northumberland.

Kids are stupid these days. The correct number is 911.

You don't use those things that way.

You *fly* them, on thermals and updrafts.

Towed behind a car? I hope somebody got video. He must have been thinking it would be like those boat-towed parachutes at the beach. Two totally different animals.

For the enemies of socialized medicine, let me quote the pilot:

'One thing I will say is the healthcare I've received is second to none.'

/The fact that he was so stupid as to buy a used glider off of eBay, get in it with no training and tie it to a car should have no bearing on his ability to judge healthcare.

"to use 50 feet of rope" FTA

Reminds me of the story about Ben Franklyn who was out flying a kite one day. The wind was sporadic, making the kite fly unstably heather and yon. His wife opened the bedroom window and yelled "Hey Ben, how about little tail?" And the Ben said, "That's what I asked you this morning, and you told me to go fly a kite."

a terrifying crash after tethering his paraglider to a car and taking to the skies.

A guy died a few blocks from here last fall (ah!) doing exactly that. His fatal mistake was that the rope holding his harness to the car was tougher than the ones holding the harness to the wing.

Strong gust. Snap. Splat.

Found a good explanation:

A paraglider is similar to a modern, steerable skydiving canopy, but different in several important ways. The paraglider is a foot-launched device, so there is no "drouge" chute or "slider", and the construction is generally much lighter, as it doesn't have to withstand the sudden shock of opening at high velocities. The paraglider usually has more cells and thinner risers than a parachute.
