log_jammin: It looks like he needs permission from the Army Corps of Engineers. mostly because they think it won't work.

Wonder why anyone in Louisiana might doubt the Army Corps of Engineers.

Anyway this sounds like Bobby seeing a second chance at national politics after his abysmal stage entrance in that response to Obama speech.

Amusingly, I saw a clip of Michael Steele on the news tonight (I thin it was from Press the Meet) where he said that the Federal government should have taken COMPLETE CONTROL of the situation the moment the explosion happened.

I haven't laughed so hard in ages.

I would. They immediately said they were to blame for the flooding from Katrina.

TheJoeY: rynthetyn: I'm pretty much at the point now where I'd be happy if Obama gave the teabaggers something to really cry about, took a page out of Hugo Chavez's playbook, and just nationalized all of BP's US holdings.

I know, right?
If they balk the tiniest bit at the cost of cleanup and damages and try to weasel out of it, nationalize the farkers. In the first quarter of this year they were making $61 million in PROFITS a DAY, and this incident is shaping up to be the worst man-made disaster in recorded history.

I'm generally totally against nationalizing corporations, but when we're talking about a disaster that our children and grandchildren, maybe even great-grandchildren are going to be dealing with, I want compensation.

No, it was pretty much the governor's fault during Katrina, too. The national assistance wasn't exemplary, but it wasn't bad, either. The state response and preparedness was _bad_.

This is just unacceptable. This is the same kind of crap the made Katrina such a FUBAR.

Did Jindal ask? If so, why no response? Someone in FEMA or elsewhere should be assigned as liaison with local authorities. But someone needs to make sure the locals get what they need. Local people generally know the situation better than someone from DC.

If the locals don't get what they need. Action is delayed and the problem grows worse. Katrina should have taught us that.

I like how when people talk about it being BP's responsibility it was just a freak accident.

But then in the same sentence they can turn around and blame the President like he personally went down there and stuck his dick in a a valve while laughing maniacally just to watch the rig blow up.

Corporations good!

Government bad!

Jindal needed Federal permission (i.e. permits) to start any dredging, which is probably what he's talking about when he mentioned he couldn't wait for them any longer.

However, that's not really true. A state can apply for an emergency permit that takes much less time to get in situations like this, which makes me wonder if he just decided last week to build these berms. Had he requested an emergency permit even a few weeks ago, they'd already be building them.

Dwight_Yeast: Amusingly, I saw a clip of Michael Steele on the news tonight (I thin it was from Press the Meet) where he said that the Federal government should have taken COMPLETE CONTROL of the situation the moment the explosion happened.

It's the "Two Santa Clauses" theory. Decry everything the Democrats do, but do the exact same thing WITH tax cuts. Cuz every little tax cut gonna be all right. Baby don't worry. About a thing.

I don't actually think anyone is blaming Bobby Jindal for this situation. This thread is full of people ridiculing him for trying to take and anti-fed stance in a situation where it is less than completely valid.

Actually, it wasn't. Had the FEDERAL levees not failed at far below the point there they were supposed to, New Orleans would have been basically fine. But go ahead and blame it on the people who didn't build or maintain the levees.

Phil Herup: Is it racist to call Bush a chimp?

That's a good question, and the best way to answer it is by context.
Is there a history of using chimps as a racial epithet against men of the same culture and color as Bush?

I know you meant to imply that if it was not racist to call Bush a chimp, then it is not racist to call Obama a chimp, but you must apply the context, and if you ask the same question in regards to Obama, then the answer is obvious.

To everyone else: Yes, I know that was wasted.

I know, I've read hundreds of his posts.

Yeah, that goes both ways. Republicans were blaming the LA Gov more than the Bush admin for Katrina. Now they are blaming Obama for this.

Heh, indeed.
