So I don't eat much fast food in general any more, but back when I was in my 20s Arby's was pretty much awesome. What happened?

Wonderful! I didn't expect to see that reference so I didn't get my hopes up. But very much this!

I was going w/ the 'Seinfeld' Elaine/Putty "No more Arbys" negotiation,
but I stand humbled in your presence.

On the other hand, a beef n' cheddar and jamocha shake sounds like a damn tasty lunch later on...

No man - It's Arby's once a month, and Elaine can't read a book at Puddy's softball game.

I like Arby's but can't keep them in business by myself.

I would hate to see them go and would miss them as much as I miss
the long departed and long lamented Burger Chef.

The closest Arby's to me has lousy service. They never have Cherry Turnovers available. The prices are too high unless you are buying a 5 for $5.95 deal. In short, they make you not want to deal with them even if you do like the food.

2010-05-23 12:18:48 PM
In my experience, their roast beef has the flavor and texture of a pile of wet napkins.

I'm pretty sure it's because the food at Arby's is really bad now, I'm told it was once good, maybe before I was born or something.

The Arby's by where I work is fantastic. Definitely much pricier than the other chains, but beef n cheddah is so damn good.

Back in the day (1979-1984) they had good stuff. Beef and cheddar with the french dressing, awesome fluffy buns (bakery quality, not the steamed cardboard that McD's uses) and one of the few fast-food places to do iced tea really well.

If I'm not mistaken, two parties defining terms and coming to an agreement
is, in fact, a negotiation. And a successful one, at that.

And a BnC and a jamocha shake still sounds damn tasty for lunch.

Arby's is overpriced crap. However, most fast food is overpriced crap, so Arby's is in no way special.

2010-05-23 01:03:44 PM
Back in the day (1979-1984) they had good stuff. Beef and cheddar with the french dressing

that is what I used to get, and this is the time frame for getting it.

Come to think of it I did go back to an Arby's a few years ago and found the "beef and cheddar" should have been renamed the "ground up hooves and orange plastic" .. Just had no flavor, just wasn't real at all.

I remember when Arby's served real beef. I guess that hasn't been true for a while now.

2010-05-23 01:14:17 PM
A lot of what the article said rings true to me. Arby's was always more expensive than McD's, etc. They were able to carve out a niche for themselves in the roast beef, specialty chicken sandwich market when their food was better quality than McD's, but cutting back on quality killed that.

Plus they had this terrible mascot for a few years:

www.flakmag.com

Seriously, WTF were they thinking? They didn't even give him a clever name. He was called "oven mitt".

Hardee's did it. It was going down in flames. But that doesn't mean it will happen again.
It's too pricey for meh.

2010-05-23 01:20:24 PM
Why would anyone go to Arby's when you can get the shiats for half the price at Checker's?

I agree - add in the crappy buns and its a terrible expensive meal.

Once a year I buy 20 roast beef sandwiches from Arbys and put them in the freezer. They make great lunchtime sandwichs after nuking for 1.5 minutes.

Of course, after a month of that, I get so sick of Arby's that I never eat there until another year has passed.

/true story.

Arby's roast beast sandwiches are superior to most other fast food options.

If not, there should be.

Solution: Sell some of the premium Arby's sandwiches at Wendy's, and add the curly fries, jamocha shake and horsey sauce, then just close the damn Arby's stores and be done with it.

2010-05-23 02:00:54 PM
Arby's is one of those places that used to be good. I remember bailing on Thanksgiving dinner to get an Arby's Melt, or whatever they called it back then.

I think what bugs me about Arby's is the inconsistency. One time I'll go there and my sandwich is stuffed with beef. The next time, there's barely a few slices.

And others have mentioned that it's fairly pricey. Feeding five people adds up.

And, IMO, curly fries are played out. Got completely sick of those years ago.

2010-05-23 02:08:06 PM
When I was younger, I used to love Arby's. It was the one fast food place I could stand to eat. And that was due to the ham and swiss melt, which they discontinued freaking years and years ago. :(

THIS. The only reason to go there (for me) is the curly fries. Just add them to Wendy's menu (Wendy's fries suck ass) and some of the better selling sandwiches and as you said, end it.

FTA: "Their engagement loyalty bond is so weak that their own customers are rating them low," Passikoff said, adding that they do have room to capitalize on their core business. "They're the only national chain that offers roast beef. If you want roast beef, they're the only game in town."

And this is why they fail.

They don't serve "roast beef," except in a legal sense. (Most folks would be horrified at what can be legally sold as "roast beef.") Arby's serves a chopped, formed, adulterated, and hydrated block of cow that's baked for three hours on cookie sheets before being sliced up.

They've cheapened everything about themselves, while jacking up their prices to boot. They've depended on shoddy advertising and crappy products for far too long. The chain blew it in the late 80's, when they started stepping on their product like friggin' drug dealers to generate more profit.

Last time I went to Arbys, it was $18 for the girl and I to eat. She got like a regular meal and I got two sandwiches. No drink.

WAY too expensive for their shiat food.

In another CSB moment, I was at an Arby's drive though about 9 years ago. I asked for the horsey sauce. The lady gave me one packet (I had ordered food for like 3 people) I asked for more. She says "No."

I'm like "Uhm, ok do I have to pay for more cause that isn't a problem."

She replies, "No. I can't. I just can't do it. I'm sorry." and closes the window on me. To this day, I have not figured out a logical reason for this.

Not around these parts. My kids like Hardees and requested that I take them there after school. I rarely eat out, much less fast food, but agreed because I remembered liking their roast beef sandwich. Yes, I specifically agreed to Hardees because I wanted a roast beast sandwich. No dice; rb discontinued at Hardees.

if you're jonesin' for a roast beef sammy that bad, go to your local grocery store's deli dept. and get some boars head

Maybe it's because they changed their $5 combos to $5.01 and promoted it like it was some sort of bonus for the customers?

Maybe it's because half their menu items are not displayed and have had obnoxiously high prices in the past? I'm thinking specifically of the Cheddar Melts @ $2.69 in the past (they are cheaper now) when they had been $1.25~1.49 and $1 on sale in the past, or the 5 for $5.95 menu, where their Turnovers were actually MORE EXPENSIVE than buying them individually. There must be some real morans running that company.

Still.. can't beat a $1 value Jamocha Shake, but if that's all people are buying, then yeah, they are going out of business real fast with that model.

2010-05-23 03:26:35 PM
also, only time I ever went to Arby's was for their 2 fish sammies for $4 deals that they never do anymore

2010-05-23 03:26:46 PM
All they need to do is make the fish sandwich a permanent menu item and I will subsidize them myself.

I really can't imagine why someone would willfully decide to eat at Arby's. At that point you're really hitting "barely classifiable as food" levels which is just above the "Taco Bell" level.

2010-05-23 03:50:16 PM
I love Arby's, but diet forces me to avoid it. Sorry for killing your franchise!

Anyways, advertise the 5 for 5 deal like they did for my whole youth. 5 dollar footlong? Pfft. 5 arby melts biatch

Last semester, I ate fast food for lunch 2 days each week. I tried to rotate restaurants, so I wouldn't get in a rut. At the same time, in an attempt to stay on budget, I only ordered from the value menu (and no drinks).

Arby's got my business a grand total of two times, and the second time was only because I couldn't believe my first trip was as bad as I'd remembered. Turns out, it was.

And it's not like I had high standards- I wanted to spend two bucks and change, have decent-tasting food, and feel full. 2 McDoubles, and I'm fine. Same with Wendy's and Carl's Jr. Taco Bell can have me stuffed for $2. Arby's offered me the "Jr. Roast Beef" and "Jr. Ham & Cheddar", both of which had about three shavings of meat on them, or the "Jr. Chicken Sandwich", which had more lettuce than chicken.

Arby's losing market share because people have options.

2010-05-23 04:17:00 PM
maybe it's the extruded roast beef you use arby's, have you considered using real roast beef, instead of something molded to look like roast beef.

I don't even know where an arbys is, but I do recall having a tasty sandwich when I was at one out of town.

Both Wendy's and Arby's are guilty of a serious race to the bottom, quality-wise. Back when Dave Thomas was alive, Wendy's food was better than BK or McDonalds, significantly so. These days, they've changed to a quality of meat that is at least 2 grades below what they used to use. It's just sad, the value menu has really destroyed fast food.

2010-05-23 05:30:12 PM
Came for the "I'm so hungry I could eat at Arby's" reference. That line has rang true to my family after my brother got a roach motel in his kids meal.
