Man I wish I could have gone to prom wearing a prom dress and getting my hair, nails, and makeup done. I wore a tux instead and went with the homecoming queen. I guess it worked out in the end.

When is he/she going on Ellen?

2010-05-22 05:19:49 PM
In all fairness, they warned him they were afraid he'd be assaulted at the prom if he showed up in drag. Which means if he DID show up in drag and got his ass kicked, he could sue THEM for negligence because they knew beforehand something would happen. They couldn't let him go. Zero discrimination here, considering they let him run for homecoming queen.

Shoulda just sent him to the fake prom.

It all started last month when the senior at the Pembroke Pines school decided he wanted to run for prom king, but with the intention of wearing a dress. School administrators ran the idea through the higher-ups and told Bonilla that prom queen might be more appropriate -- an option he liked even better.

So he did what they suggested and then they say he can't do that either...

The suspension, said Drew, the spokeswoman, was solely because Bonilla had ignored security personnel after parking in the wrong place.

And after two meetings with the school principal to plead for the right to wear a dress, Bonilla was slapped with a two-day suspension, the timing of which meant he couldn't go to the prom at all.

that solves the short term problem, but ye gods are they in for the mother of all lawsuits!

I already quoted that part earlier in the thread.

The school gave him permission for him to run for prom queen and then they said he couldn't.

And to you that is "Zero discrimination here"?

They DID let him run, he was in the top three. read the article again.

Well. He might have gotten beaten up for it. I think preemptively punishing victims of hate crimes is the safest route to take here.

no, that'd pretty much be the end of a free society. I hate to say it, but the best thing they could have done was let the kid to to prom dressed up in drag, and let him face up to whatever might happen. Give him a warning, sign a waiver, protect him as best you can...but if he fell down a flight of stairs then you let the cops step in and do their criminal investigation.

He wouldn't have gotten the ticket if he hadn't backed in

Guys, I have a great idea. Lets ban all black people, asains, and them brown skinned folk from prom. Ya know, for thier safety.

You really fail at your understanding of basic law. IF they believed that someone was going to assualt him, then they needed to either add extra security or ban the people willing to commit a crime. As the Supreme court has said, a right to free speech includes a state duty to ensure the speaker is not silenced by threats of the mob

Well uh, I suppose if you imagine it like a parking space that you think 'gosh there's no way I'm going to be able to fit in there' but then you fold in the side view mirrors and sure enough, well look at that.

And why do you hate to say it? It sounds to me like that's exactly what should have happened.

2010-05-22 08:52:45 PM
Don't know which side to take here. The school did let him run for queen, and the kid did give them a solid excuse to suspend his ass. Plus he's such an attention whore. I say it worked out well all around.

So Gay = Transvestite?

Thanks, kid. Those stereotypes aren't perpetuating themselves, good work!

That is the very definition of discrimination! Rather than confront homophobia, they allow it to dictate their policy. INAL, but I do have a grad degree that deals with this sort of situation. What you have suggested is discriminatory and specifically homophobic. The school made themselves very vulnerable to legal action. The ticket won't divert the courts' attention, because that sort of diversion is one of the oldest and moldiest tricks in the book.

Attention whore homo is an attention whore.

2010-05-22 08:59:10 PM
So, um, if they were afraid he was going to get beaten up for attending prom in drag...

... isn't it kind of their responsibility to make sure when he does attend... he's not assaulted?

Isn't that the administration's job? I'm pretty sure when I went to school I wasn't allowed to not show up for class because of some people that wanted to beat the crap out of me. I went to class, and if I got the crap beat out of me... the adminstrators stepped in and disciplined the people involved.

2010-05-22 08:59:48 PM
Well, if they can prove that he honestly commited an offense that warrants a parking ticket, that he was honestly suspended because of said parking ticket, and that they honestly would have suspended a straight student for the same offense...

Oh, who am I kidding.

Is that really what it feels like to be a bigot in public? Constantly fearful of being beaten up for your beliefs???

From the article an administrator said, "More than ever before, those are real concerns these days..."

No, I'd say it's considerably less than before. You see, before, he certainly wouldn't be out of the closet, posting posters around campus, and securing a place near the top of a vanity election.

Before was a much worse place, and while where we are now isn't the best place I'd say this is a step in the right direction, sure there are concerns these days, but you should be proud of your student body, and this Queen for getting this far. It's a shame they didn't let the kid have his prom.

I think it's great that kids of his generation are pushing the boundaries. You have to do that to make change happen. My generation pushed boundaries regarding homosexuality, cross-dressing, etc, and perpetuated change, the next generation is pushing to the next logical step.

I look forward to the day when all the 'issues' and prejudices regarding sexuality are a thing of the past.

And that will happen by people pushing and pushing until society realizes it's no big deal what people do sexually between consenting individuals or personal identity.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the "we're doing this for your safety" rationale is bullshiat. It was used an excuse to keep school proms segregated during the 60's and 70s.

On the other hand, he just doesn't pull-off the whole ensemble. I've seen a lot hotter-looking trannies.

outback_rebel: What does being gay have to do with wearing a dress? I know a few gay dudes, and none of them would be caught in a dress.

To most people the term 'gay' encapsulates everything that is at all different from the societal norm. And people who do know what's up don't feel like explaining the differences beforehand so they just say 'gay' to keep it simple. It's a shame, and could all easily be cleared up if anyone cared, but they don't. So 'gay' is used to describe: homosexuals, crossdressers, transsexuals, pedophiles (not as much anymore, at least not in popular media,) people that have sex with box-turtles, etc. or anything else that isn't 100%-certified-red-blooded-american-male-approved.

I'm a guy who likes redheaded women. My brother is a guy who likes guys. We pretty much agree on everything else, and if you met us, you would have no idea who's gay or straight.

I don't hate anybody, I just don't like reinforcing the idea that gay = weird.
