soon enough the tree fort bubble will burst and they'll realize what a bad investment this was

There were farkers who said this should happen.

They get cookies and lemonade.

As a local i'm pleased to see my council do something right! Other than export Keith Urban, that is....

I always wanted a treehouse.

rosenburger,

I will gladly donate $60,000 to your council if they take Keith Urban back.
Nicole too, she's looking kind of used up these days.

FiatJustitia: I always wanted a treehouse.

So this. Those kids are going to have such an awesome fort.

I'd prefer the slapped-together shanty-town shack. More character, patching goes unnoticed, and you make enlightening mistakes as you build it.

I dunno, yes, it sucks that the council was a bunch of ninnies and tore down the original fort. However, this could be freaking awesome. They spent about 40,000 on a local playground and I still like going to play on it. It's so sweet.

So wait...if I'm reading the article correctly, the kids built the fort in a tree growing in a city park. Then yeah, the Council kinda had an obligation to remove the fort, 'cause if one of the kids had fallen out and hurt themselves the Council would have been liable. And you know at least one of those kids have the kind of parents who would say "My precious snowflake fell out of the city's tree and hurt himself! Yes, he built the fort and yes, he did it without permission, but it's a city park so it's the city's job to make sure he's safe while he's in the park! I'm suing!"

This is a seriously cool 'climber'. There was one in a park in my hometown.

I was too old for it, but was able to see my kids play on it.

Then the council tore it down and put up one of those "safe" climbers made of smooth plastic. Ugh.

Not with the way the city council pisses away $60k. They'll hire a subcontractor who'll pay another subcontractor who'll pay another subcontractor who'll pay another subcontractor $2000 to slap together some corrugated cardboard boxes and duct tape.

I would complain about wasting 60k. But this is pretty farking cool.

/how much in real money is 60k aussy dollars?

Maybe too obscure for fark, but not me. Read the entire series. I think I might have been in my early teens, late kid years. What I remember I really liked them. Don't know how they would stand up today.

I'm sure the tax payers are real happy about this.

Uh am I missing something? Article said $50k NOT $60k or did no one bother to read the farking article.

Oh, fark liability. This bullshiat is why we can't have nice things.

That's awesome.

We had a fort in my backyard... several actually. But the one my dad built us had rooms in it, and you could swing on a rope from the balcony.

I think the city council made the best possible decision under the circumstances. Good for them.

2010-05-21 10:25:37 AM
I dont think this is over yet.

kids build tree house, city tears it down and offers to build them a $50k fort? im thinking the city will have to start charging for admission, to cover the price of building it, insurance, and to pay for the guards on duty to make sure no one gets hurt.

probably totally off base here

will wait for the next article.

$130,000 after cost overruns. And it's still in committee.

I'm The Foot Farking Master: Give me some more of that fiscal responsibility... Umm yeah.

Well yes, actually. Had the city left the junk fort up on city land like that and it collapsed with someone's crotchfruit inside, a whole lot of parents could have easily sued the city and won.

As for the money spent on the replacement, professionally-made and won't fall apart during the next rain storm as it is, my guess is someone anonymously donated the money to the city after hearing this story, or someone in the city council thought that 50k invested in this rather than using it directly in advertising for the city in an attempt to mitigate the bad press from this incident was a better investment. Personally, I think that reinvesting in community spaces and giving kids another relatively safe space to play is a far better us of funds than some other inane PR stunt.

2010-05-21 03:33:32 PM
ok, so a $0 kid-made non-engineered fort is out of the question.

a $60k industrially-engineered fort is the other option?

are there no fathers among these children that are hobbyist carpenters? is there no business to donate the wood? how about a nice $500 hobbyist-adult-made fort? is that not sue-proof enough? because of course, that's what causes this bullshiat insanity: litigiousness.
