No matter what claim is made, there will always be someone to make a counterclaim. Simply for the publicity/controversy. Always. No matter which one is right we will never know the truth. Because controversy = ratings.

If any given claim is made by anyone the least bit rational, Fox News is there with the counterclaim no matter how much they have to pay for it.

Can someone smarter than me come up with a "too much glucose, not enough oxygen" joke for the fatness that is the United States?

/yes. i know

It would probably be better to call it a biological fuel cell. Biofuel cell sounds like they're converting cats into ethanol.

Am I the only one who thought of

When does our need for fuel become something that would let us think that is ok? Well, fark thinking about it I guess we do that already its just not so direct.

Fuel? These are batteries intended for pacemakers. I mean, maybe in the future... but so far the intent of this technology is benign.

Sure, I didn't mean to imply that was the intent now. Just a thought for down the road. I should note I have little hope for decency in the world. I believe its there but I think its just a candle in a very dark world.

Even in the future that makes no goddamn sense. We'll make food to feed to people to make fuel from their blood?

That's like 100000 time dumber than corn-ethanol, which is already a pretty dumbass idea.

The only use for this is for electronic implants in the body, instead of a battery. And for that, it's pretty damn cool.

Well, if you greatly improved it, and allowed it to charge a battery based off body heat, vibration, and these chemical reactions... you could theoretically have everyone plug into the grid at night and go to sleep.

But like I said, in the future, if it functioned symbiotically (instead of parasitically) it wouldn't matter how much the person ate, as long as they were eating enough to be alive. Then even if you're producing a little bit of energy, you would be producing and then storing more than you were before, which is zero.

The human body is very inefficient in many ways. This is likely energetically far superior to, say, pedaling a bike attached to a magnet to power your television. Less waste and such.

Yes, and that's the dumbest idea ever. You're better off just turning food into electricity by fermenting it or burning it or whatever, there's no reason at all for human body fluid to be involved in the conversion from food -> electricity.

No, that idea is very much silly in relation to this development. Humans take more energy than you'll get out of them. These don't change that. It just takes some of the energy that you get from food and convert it into work energy.

The only application for this is for powering personal items or implants. Yes - nefarious people could use self-powering implants to track people I suppose. But the same exact thing can already be accomplished with current technology with batteries. And really, who's going to do that?

This is completely unrelated to harvesting energy.

Plus it's more fatty-compatible. Instead of a gastric bypass you can just have 12V socket installed and charge your iPod.

Beyond just the Second Law, there's another problem.

Humans sort of need that energy. You know. To LIVE.

Suck out more than just a little bit, and it's likely to kill you.
