Here in San Diego we had a nut who systemically shot people in a McDonald's with a rifle while dozens of cops stood around outside wringing their hands. Ever since then, I've assumed the police are going to be useless in one of these situations and that whatever I can do on my own is the only hope of survival I'll have.

I would suggest moving out of California if you want that CCW. California is about to ban unloaded open carry too.

No need to leave Cali just yet. Within a month or so SCOTUS will rule on McDonald, and the smart money is betting that Heller will be Incorporated for the entire country.

Waiting in the wings is Sykes (new window), which, if SCOTUS rules as expected, will force California to become a "will issue" State (along with the other hold-outs).

Since our State goobermint is soooooo afraid of Open Carry, most folks predict that will-issue CCW will be our State's solution.

Woot!

Yeah I'd agree with that. It just strikes me as funny that a lot of farkers thing concealed carry is this thing that is not allowed anywhere. Then I check their profile and it says California, New York, Illinois, or Boston.

Meanwhile the rest of us in "flyover country" have had CCW for years.

It would have taken you 1/3 the time to google San Diego McDonald's shooting and find out about the San Ysidro McDonald's masscre than to type this response doubting him.

I googled it, and there is absolutely no mention of cops standing around motionless while this person was shooting in a nearby building.

RoyBatty: I don't know shiat about shiat. But picking up a chair with the enormous moment of inertia when swinging it? Versus opening the door, letting the guy come by close and tripping him or pounding him then? Seems questionable. I wouldn't swing the chair at him though until I was certain this guy would never fire his gun.

But again, I don't know shiat about shiat so good for Mr. Richardson!

I don't think it would have made a difference. To a man that big, the chair probably felt as if it was made from balsa wood.

I agree with you that the ignorance is not as strong as implied by spartywrx. That said, there is a persistent streak of "you only want a gun because you have a small penis" here in Farkdom. How come there was so much crime in the old west?

Because it's exaggerated. (Old west was a very short actual period before military and police enforced government authority in far flung towns). Most criminal gun violence was perpetrated by large armed gangs before government authority had been projected.

I tell you very seriously: bullshiat. Beating someone with a beanbag chair is ridiculous, yes. But any other chair, if it's made of anything strong enough for it to function as a chair, is a badass weapon that can and will do severe hurt, especially in the hands of a large strong man. Real-life chairs are not those Hollywood chairs that are made out of styrofoam and rigged to break.

They try to catch bad guys after the fact. Unless you can afford a body guard, the only person you can count on protecting you is yourself.

Even if police were obligated to protect you, it wouldn't be possible for every citizen to have a cop close enough to do them any good if they're attacked, 24/7.
