He was funding his cannabis habit?

It was student Sulman's fourth raid on the betting chain and the third at that shop.

um, really? that is some nice police work there.

you would think after the first 2 robberies they would, I dont know, increase security?

Sulman, 20, used a fake handgun to hold up the counters in a bid to fund his £200-a-week cannabis habit.

Idiot would have gotten shot otherwise.

I don't know shiat about shiat. But picking up a chair with the enormous moment of inertia when swinging it? Versus opening the door, letting the guy come by close and tripping him or pounding him then? Seems questionable. I wouldn't swing the chair at him though until I was certain this guy would never fire his gun.

But again, I don't know shiat about shiat so good for Mr. Richardson!

How's that gun control working for you Britain? Now the only people with guns are criminals. Law abiding citizens have to arm themselves with chairs. How long until you ban chairs?

Reminds me of the scene from Snatch. Or was that Lock, Stock? Anyway, maybe he knew the gun was fake.

If it comes out that this guy realized that the gun was fake before he decided to clobber him with a chair, will he get arrested for excessive force?

Hmm when I read it out loud I mentally changed £200 to "two hundred pound" and it sounded much more impressive.

Hell yeah! Every time there is a robbery in America, brave citizens gun the guy down in a hail of heroic gun fire. Then everyone gets laid.

Given the protections applied to criminals in the United Kingdom, Mr. Richardson may be criminally charged regardless of any establishment of his knowledge of the nature of the weapon used.

How can you increase security more than having a CCTV every 6 feet? Armed guards are not an option.

There appears to be bulletproof glass between the robber and the employee, yet he still raises his hands and complies. WTF?

I also like how the one guy keeps playing that video slot or whatever it is the whole time.

I still think it would be better if every state allowed carrying laws. Nobody would rob the bank if the guy behind him was carrying a .45, steal from an old lady if everyone had a Springfield, or try to take from an armored car if everyone in the parking lot was carrying.

Guns are pretty easy to get in the states, so here you have to assume it's real. In the UK it's actually quite difficult to get a handgun, so while I wouldn't assume that a gun I saw would be fake there, there is a very good chance that it is.

ne2d: There appears to be bulletproof glass between the robber and the employee, yet he still raises his hands and complies. WTF?

The glass doesn't protect the customers, so he could just put a bullet into someone elses head if he doesn't comply. For the small amount the place is likely to lose, it's better to just get the guy out of there.

Also, I suppose the glass might not be actually bullet-proof. Not sure I'd want to find out that the boss skimped and stuck in standard window glass.

Yeah I chuckled at that, too.

Also:
Sulman, from Headingley, is quickly reduced to a heap on the floor with the have-a-go-hero sitting on top of him until police arrive.

I can just picture that dude sitting on the little guy. Arms folded with a straight face while the little guy flails helplessly underneath. Lollerskates.

Watching the video there was a lot of time the robber could have shot the guy before getting hit with a chair, but then looking at the close up of Mr Richardson if he had been shot, it would have only made him angry.

$300 of weed per week? I have no idea what UK weed prices are like but in most of the US $300 gets you an ounce of pretty decent weed not super top stuff but way better than brick weed. A guy who puts back an oz, per week either isn't getting high off of weed or just isn't moving.

That's ~$285 U.S. a week, about an ounce a week street prices. At my height of smoking, I'd only go through a half ounce a week, and I was a farking pothead, I can't imagine burning a whole zip a week unless the weed was dirt. Police inflation is probably at work here.

Even if it is bullet proof, you don't want it to be on the business side while it's tested.

At least in the US, his insurance probably requires that he turns over the money without resistance. For insurance companies, it's a lot cheaper to replace a couple thousand dollars stolen from a register rather than paying for tens of thousands for medical bills. And I don't know how expensive bullet proof glass is, but used bulletproof glass doesn't sound as safe as brand new.

GameSprocket: Walker: How's that gun control working for you Britain? Now the only people with guns are criminals. Law abiding citizens have to arm themselves with chairs. How long until you ban chairs?

In 2005/6 the police in England and Wales reported 50 gun homicides, a rate of 0.1 illegal gun deaths per 100,000 of population. Only 6.6% of homicides involved the use of a firearm.[29]

By way of international comparison, in 2004 the police in the United States reported 9,326 gun homicides.[30] The overall homicide rates per 100,000 (regardless of weapon type) reported by the United Nations for 1999 were 4.55 for the U.S. and 1.45 in England and Wales. (new window)

Quit bringing that up. It gives people ideas.

Are homicides committed with implements other than firearms preferable to homicides committed with firearms?

What a meaningless statistic. Of course gun crime in the UK will be lower because there are simply fewer guns. Look at violent crime rate between the two countries for a more accurate comparison.

A 2009 daily mail article (new window) claims that the UK has 2,034 offenses per 100,000 people while the US only has 466 violent crimes per 100k
