This is certainly a shiatty blog post, but I'm feeling a bit of deja vous right now because I had a conversation with a friend just yesterday who was debating whether to try returning or re-selling his iPad for almost exactly the same reason...he realized it had been a couple of days and he hadn't picked it up from his table.

Everyone at my job is clamoring for one of our loaner iPads but the general consensus when they return them is they're useless without the 3G data connection.

um... the guy took it to "the geek squad?" what is he, 75?

Bought one for my wife and kids. They love it. Wife does email and recipes and light web-surfing while downstairs in the family-room and kitchen. Kids play games and read on it. I use it to web-surf the paper in the morning while doing my morning reading before work.

We bought the intro-level, and use it only at home. No 3G, just 802-11.

I love my Iphone but use a PC for daily activities. I really considered getting this because of the iphone. However the more I thought about it, it doesn't meet a single need for me. I would like to get a book reader eventually, but until the price of a digital book comes way down to at least paperback prices, I can't see getting a reader either.

Games I do on my PC, and web based games are mostly Flash. I work with a PC all day, so I can get my news, email, etc. and such on a normal PC. I need more power and a serial connection for my work, so it is no good for work travel.

I suppose if I was a road warrior and just needed to get email and to my intranet on the road all the time, this might be a good choice, but other than that it really serves me no need than the "Play with gadget" fun, which doesn't last too long.

"You don't sell over 1 million devices just because people are curious."

Yeah, you sell a lot of those devices to sheep and people that just needed to have the iPad, despite already owning an iPod and laptop/netbook. If you didn't already own a laptop/netbook, then why buy a gimped device?

16gig for $500.00.. no 3G? wow.. ouch.

2010-05-17 05:54:33 PM
Meh. I thought about getting an iPad, but then I played around with one a friend bought.

Not impressed.

Granted, it's slim and cool looking, but it does just about jack that an iPhone won't do. I was going to upgrade from my little Vista Asus T91 netbook that has the flip over and around touch screen and then found out that the iPad does just about 5% (number yanked out of my ass) of what the netbook will do at half the price. No thanks. I'll live with the somewhat uncooler and thicker Asus any day over Apple's product.

Dr.Knockboots: Yeah, you sell a lot of those devices to sheep and people that just needed to have the iPad, despite already owning an iPod and laptop/netbook.

And that seems to be jussssssst fine with Apple, and with the sheep, and the people that just need to have the iPad, and with the (believe it or not, they're real) people who can actually find a legitimate business use for this device.

I want to implement a new rule: before anyone bashes the iPad on the sheep/gotta-have-it-people principle, they must first bash things like Jaguars, Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Cigarette Boats, NetJet Memberships, Groceries from Whole Foods, the Xbox Elite, Real Messenger Bags Worn by Non-Messengers, etc. etc.

I mean, seriously. We get it. The iPad is totally deficient in the Making Real Computer Geeks Happy department (you'll notice I don't have one, either, although I'm far from a Real Computer Geek ).

Doc, please don't feel this is directed JUST at you or that I think you're deficient in the Saying Something Fresh and New Once In Awhile department, because you just happened to be the random target I picked...but this whole "only f*ing sheep buy iAnything" is getting a little stale, yaknowwhatI'msayin?

People. Like. Simple. Things.

I honestly don't know why this is so difficult. There is a large group of computer users out there who do nothing but consume media, surf the web and perhaps send an email now and then. The reason the iPad sold so brilliantly is because it serves that market very, very well.

I am a graphic designer / videographer who owns a Mac Pro and a 17" Macbook. I have no need for the device aside from perhaps having a decent size screen that I can actually use in coach; a bit pricy for that.

My mom is a retired school teacher who likes to keep up with the family on Facebook, email me pictures of cats and carry around every book she could ever care to read. For her, the device is perfect.

However, I expect the iPad to continue to expand and grow in usefulness as new innovative apps come out for it. My roommate is a photographer and bought it just for the ability to import, edit and trim down shots he is taking live on location. He has a light, portable editing studio that keeps him a step ahead of the other photographers in the room.

If you don't need one, don't get one, but dismissing a million people as "sheep" who bought the device in just the first few months is foolish.

So he has a glitchy iPad (since can't remember wireless passwords), doesn't know how to charge it properly (though I wouldn't trust the Geek Squad to diagnose a cough) and doesn't use it.

And this is worth a blog post and a greenlit headline?

I'd pay $500 or so for a decent tablet or whatever you call that form factor. And as soon as someone makes one I'd want, I will. All they have to do is put a usb port or card slot on the goddam thing.

I could see using one of these as a replacement for my laptop around the house, but not for another hardware revision or so, once the storage capacity goes up, price goes down, and the bugs get fixed.

And yeah, USB would be nice.

Rhetorically, not me.

This is what people get for chasing the 'next big thing' and not waiting for the bugs (or are they features?) to be worked out.

So you don't think there is legitimate criticism of iPad and whatever other Apple products? TFA listed some complaints, and some people have other complaints.

Also, popularity does not necessarily mean it's the best product. The Chevy Cavalier is one of the most popular cars of all time, and it's also one of the shiattiest. And McDonald's is damned popular but can't compare to 5 star restaurants in terms of quality.

You just don't get it. Apple is about craftsmanship and, like, sticking it to evil corporations like Microsoft. Plus the battery life is out of this world, it totally justifies paying twice the market value.

I'm thinking of getting one, I don't like netbooks, have an iPhone with hundreds of dollars in apps and movies, and I just need email and a VNC/ssh client I can use here and there for support when I'm on call. Add to that the 3g plan is only $30 a month unlimited when I currently carry around my mifi card @ $100 a month and a bulky laptop.

Hopefully I don't end up returning mine!

It's something to note that so many people have to go out of their way to tell the world why they don't own one or won't get one. Say what you will about its usefulness, it obviously is marketed well and provides a good deal of utility to quite a large segment of the population. People are almost getting defensive about not getting one. That means it is working well for Apple.

Mine is due in this week, complete with 3G. Yes, I am geek. I used to own a Powerbook and a Macbook but I now own a Dell laptop and PC (sure, I could build a PC but I value my time too much). I am a CCNA, MCSE and MCDBA but when I am not at work I only consume media.

The iPad is perfect for me. Surfing Fark, doing the facebook and twitter thing, reading a book or a comic (something I have never done but am interested in), or watching a movie in bed while the wife sleeps. I don't see the problem. Maybe the device is not for you, but there seem to be plenty of me's out there.

2010-05-17 09:35:34 PM
After using one, I still have no idea what it's for or how it can benefit me.

I mean, as a college student the tech shop on campus is trying real hard to sell them to us. But they are hard to type on at the speed someone talks so can't really take notes on it. There isn't a stylus so can't really take non-text notes with it. Which the Tech Shop claims is the reason to buy it is to take notes you just can't take on a normal laptop; which it completely fails at.

Hell, even after my Freshman year I stopped taking my laptop to class because it really just gets in the way and I always became distracted by it.

So I can use it to browse the web while on my couch eh...well that's what my laptop's sole purpose is today. It's not like I use a lot of flash, but there is nothing about using my laptop that I think could be improved by turning it into a shiatty 4:3 touchscreen. Right now, I am in a relaxed position on the couch legs propped up and the laptop on my left leg typing all this.

That's the backlash against Apple's marketing strategy. The iPad is for hip young people on the go. I guess the implication is that if you don't own one, you're a crotchety old PC user who tells kids to get off his lawn. Naturally people do not like this (probably accurate) assumption, so they get on the internet and rage out at Apple users.

A Jaguar, Rolls-Royce, or Bentley will all ride considerably better and have more features than whatever tin can you drive. A better idea would be to force people to bash products that give you considerably less for more money. This of course goes unsaid, as we're already a step ahead of you on that one.
