CWeinerWV: bungle_jr: nesler: jaylectricity: A Texas lawyer was charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly fired five shots from a handgun at a census canvasser.

Canvassing was last year. This year is enumerating.

Indeed. And I've been waiting for this crap to start happening.

/enumerator
//please don't shoot me

hello there fellow enumerator
i also would like to remain not shot at

Me too. I hate people more and more everyday.

Field Operations Supervisor here. Get off the internet, and get back to work. Those questionnaires are not going to fill themselves out.

/oh and I'd like to not have bullet holes in me either

I would never pay a lawyer who was dumb enough to actually list the following in her online profile:

LISTED IN:
Who's Who in American Law
Who's Who Among Young Emerging Leaders in America
Who's Who in Texas
International Who's Who of Professionals
Outstanding Young Women in America
Who's Who in Executive & Professionals
Who's Who Among Young American Professionals
Who's Who in Finance and Industry
Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities

I dunno, that's at least $500 worth of books that she had to order (+$35 for each additional)

Dinkbreath: ghostfart: Hey moran neo-cons; before you start getting all stabby, census taking was established by the founding fathers so you would get fair representation. Let the people do their jobs.

Some folks are uncomfortable talking to any government, DMV, court house/judge, insurance adjuster, bank, lawyer, police, IRS, media, auto dealer, Cell Phone, etc agency/representative - FEAR of being screwed.
/Can't imagine why.
//mebbe an incentive census thing would help, got nuthin.

Then maybe they should have mailed back the Census form that got sent to everyone in the first place? Then they wouldn't have had to talk to anyone.

for whatever its worth, although this is obviously a good idea, it doesn't 100% guarantee that you won't get a visit. Sometimes they'll send a followup, sometimes the form will get lost in the mail, sometimes, other human error will strike, and someone'll have to come to your door.
It happens.

My ex suggested I could get a nice summer job once school is out and I'm not trying to get middle school students to learn something, anything.

I told her, "Are you farking crazy? Just read some of the paranoid rants online about the census. I'm not about to go out and risk getting shot at by these idiots."

I got into it with several of these crazies on some political/current events fora about how intrusive and "none of your damn business" the questions are. I have copies of the census tally sheets from 1930 where it asked the names and ages of my grandparents, my father and uncles, my grandfather's income and how much his farm was worth. Then there was the one from 1910 of my great grandfather's family where they asked where every one was born, what country, what language they spoke, assessed value of the farm and how much they still owed on their mortgage.

And they think this census' questions are "intrusive, socialist and none of your business?"

What I didn't get was the census person who showed up last year asking to confirm my address. Um, there's a number on the house and there's street signs. Duh.

Oh right. Black man in the White House.

bungle_jr: CWeinerWV: Which is why they send those forms in the mail in the first place? You wouldn't believe what I've seen so far in the low income areas of WV. I'd blame them for not reading the whole "required by law" part if it wasn't for the fact that I know most of them probably can't read. Good luck buying your meth and food for your thirty cats when you get the fine.

i wonder, do they ever actually fine anyone, or use any other form of enforcement?

It happens. Rarely prosecution but it has happened. I think the worst that ever happened was 60 days jail time. People are givin a thousand opportunities to answer the damn thing to avoid the fine, but some just outright refuse (even when they refuse we'll come back and try again). I don't like the govt in everything I do but jebus chose your battles. It can't kill people to tell them the names of those in the house, age, sex, race, and whether you own or rent. None of the people on my route had a problem giving this info when it came time to apply for welfare and whatever other programs they're on.

You may not get it in the mail or it got lost for whatever reason (and 90% of them that tell you this are lying, but I digress), but we're talking about the people who still avoid us and/or refuse after we've come after them 5 or 6 times. These are the people I'm talking about.

Also, if they read the damn thing or listened to it being read to them, they'd know that all it is is your name, bday, sex, race, and whether you rent or own. You don't even have to answer it all. No "how much is your grandfather's farm worth" crap.

Where did you see any indication of party affiliation? She could also be one of the anarchists that caucus (and protest) with the Democrats.

I answered my census with the number of folks that live in my house, and nothing else. I am looking forward to the census bubba dropping by to ask me whether I'm Asian or any of the other stuff the government doesn't need.

2010-05-15 01:19:36 AM
Ill tell them how many people live here and if they are american citizens. That is all they need to know. Anything beyond that is none of the govts business.

The lawyer in question will very likely get off with a small fine. In Texas if someone tells you to get off their property.. you move your ass.

NRFU RI here. Got nuthin'. In a part of the country with compliant, mostly sane individuals.

Though I did have an elderly lady tell me the 2010 census didn't really matter... because her scientist daughter told her the Wyoming supervolcano/caldera was about to blow, and we were all going to die.

I sure hope she was just being demented.

I'm actually surprised more of this thing isn't happening with all the paranoid freaks out there. I had an enumerator come to my house, and I happened to be sitting outside replacing the string on the weed whacker. I told her I mailed mine in over a month ago, and that this wasn't a good time. She said "Fine, no problem, and that was that". No point in getting all shooty over someone doing their job.

Silly biatch, I hope she is charged with a felony and has her guns taken away. She is obviously farking nuts not responsible enough to own one.

Also: Very clever, subby.

I did a brief stint at enumerating this year until a crazy threatened to pull a gun on me.

Listen, folks. Enumerators have every legal right to be on your property. Your No Trespassing signs mean dick. Sorry, but it's true. If I'm working for the census, I have a legal right to be there, and the full weight of the law is in my favour if I walk up to your door (note, TO your door), ring your doorbell, and ask you the seven measly questions on my questionnaire.

You are well within your rights to politely refuse to answer my questions, though, frankly, you're a farking retard if you do, and you're only hurting your community by doing so. But if you threaten bodily harm upon me, and I'm reasonably sure there is intent to carry out that threat, I am well within my rights to call the cops on you. Castle Doctrine be damned.

I'm The Foot Farking Master: So your ex told you to get a job? Bummer.

I see your reading comprehension skills are nicely below par of most of my middle school students. How nice.

OTOH, I probably should have noted that in the summers when school is not in session, I usually am in a summer temp job handling insurance claims that pays me $22 a hour. Oh, and top of that, I have my year round weekend job to fall back on, especially when others take vacation or sick leave.

In short, Footie, you can just kiss my hairy, white ass.

TedNigma: Fact: People do not trust Over Lords, and will retaliate when felt oppressed.

Fact: The US govt has left it's people with nothing to trust in. Used to be you get pulled over for a violation, now it's a Nazi papers check point called "Sobriety Check" Look, If I am doing nothing wrong, drunk or not, leave me alone. 'Cause your Nazism will cause me to crash out of paranoia faster than me relaxing into a buzz.

Fact: Cops lie, govt lies, you lie. I trust no one.
