The board she was riding when she lost the arm is on display at the CA Surf Museum (new window) as part of the "Women on Waves" exhibit.

It's also amazing that even with one arm, she's still an amazing surfer (new window). I've got four fully functional limbs and will never be anywhere close to as good as she is.

I teach in HS Orange County, one of my students this year is a freshman paralyzed from the waist down. Earlier this year he was taken to a clinic these guys have and now he's all about surfing. He hangs with the surf team (we have a Varsity and JV surf teams) and even started talking like Spicoli. It was one of the coolest things to witness him talking with his surfing buddies about catching waves and the feeling that he got from that experience which changed his life. He's got a great attitude about being in a wheelchair and catches me off guard with his humor. He once asked to borrow a pair of scissors off my desk then promised he wouldn't run with them. I did a double take and he laughed his ass off at me.

Wow, I came in thinking I know this article is supposed to be inspiring, but I just feel depressed that surfing doesn't really, truly heal these people. A few crude and insensitive comments later, I'm smiling. And Death_poot, I think I'm in love with you.
