I just mentioned we were in talks with the French about a couple of nukes to deal with a small dust up in S.E. Asia. Well before we took over.

This is why I think Nixon was one of our best presidents, next to Adams. Even though he got a bad rep and left office like he did, he could have easily saved face and ego by letting the american people in on some of the good things he did. Instead, he took it like a man, resigned, and left.

Sure, he's the butt of a lot of jokes, but that man did more for this country than a shiatload of 'modern' presidents, reagan included.

This has been common knowledge in FR and IR studies for about twenty years. I've come across it in undergrand and grad school studies in nuclear policy, the Vietnam war and Chinese studies.

Once again history shows how he truly was a great President. I would love that dream ticket of Ronald and Richard vs Bill and Barry on a smack down cage fight. Of course I mean ideologically. I personally hate violence and would kill anyone who promotes violence. Jimmy selling peanuts and George selling beer as his old man provides security. I wish the doctors here would at least let me have some crayons so I could illustrate the wonderment of it all.yea....LBJ would be the ring announcer.

"Then US President Richard Nixon was also apparently fearful of the effect of a nuclear war on 250,000 US troops stationed in the Asia-Pacific region and still smarting from a Soviet refusal five years earlier to stage a joint attack on China's nascent nuclear programme."

This is interesting. What would have been that outcome. What was it Montgomery said, "Do not go fighting with your land armies in China".

Whatever his faults, Nixon understood foreign policy in general and China in particular better than any other president after him. Bush the Elder was a close second.

Clinton didn't know diddly-squat at the start of his presidency but learned a lot and was willing to learn.

Bush the younger seems to have had no interest in learning anything at all.

Yes Nixon did play an important role and a positive one in this story and that's just the historical record.

He just got caught, unlike his contemporary counterparts.

Something like this probably happened. The question is were the Soviets really planning on nuking China, or just talking tough to try and make the US and China think they actually would launch nukes. This was a period where all three sides were pretty determined to make the others believe that they actually would use their nukes and that it wasn't all bluster.

I'd also believe this is something Nixon/Kissinger told the Chinese to make us sound like their buddy/protector without there being much truth behind it.

Classice blunders:

The most famous is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia."

But only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"

Apart from the whole burglary and conspiracy thing, not much. If you remove that, I actually think he was a pretty decent POTUS (kickstarted the peace process in the Middle East, opened up relations with China, arms control, enviromentalism, Civil rights etc.).

But, the burglary and conspiracy were (rightfully) significant enough to tarnish whatever good things he had done. You get caught committing a felony while in office, you pay the price.

Because not letting the Soviets wipe them out ensured a balance of power on Russia's eastern border. Balancing power ensures limited hostilities. Ensures limited opportunity for soviet influence expansion.

I find this story plausible. Nixon's presidency was the most complex in history. What really sank Nixon was the fact that he had the charisma of a sump pump. Had he a people personality like Clinton or Reagan he would have skated through Watergate.
