After a quick search, it appears that the Boston Globe uses "3rd" only for dates, and "3d" for other uses of "third." I guess they're trying to be all fancy and West Publishing-y. However, their uses of "2nd" and "2d" don't appear to follow the same rule.

It's surprising they don't use the 2d thing, because their stories usually lack depth.

Came here to say this. I'm used to law books that say "2d" and "3d" (as a series number), so this didn't strike me as odd at all. Took me a minute to figure out what subby was getting at.

"You know what the fellow said; in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace... and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

The 1d and 2d guy looked guilty, but the 3d guy? he seemed so...nice.
