If a movie is only downloaded 50,000 times, it must be a really shiatty movie.

Hurt Locker has been near the top of my Netflix queue for months now, with "Long Wait" attached. These doofusses are killing themselves, since I can get it on ebay for under ten bucks now and they won't see jack squat worth of royalties. Are they complete morans, or just pretending to be?

Too bad for them that I got it from usenet...

shush...
we do not talk about that.

i saw it last week. i'm not sure what the fuss is all about. it was a big "meh."

the answer is yes.

tweekster: They are going to sue over a bunch of crappy films so they can claim piracy was why they did poorly?

It got an Oscar. Must have done something right.

Also, is there some super special way to access usenet that doesn't involve paying a monthly superscription to a site like giganews or whatever? In every one of these threads someone mentions usenet followed by a reply of "SHHHHHHHH it's a secret".

But the movie wasn't very good.

Add it to your "overrated" list.

Phew! I was too busy getting "Granny Takes A Squirt" to download it.

Good.

Why anyone still pirates shiat these days is beyond me. With Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Redbox, Grooveshark, Pandora, & various other forms of legal (cheap or free) ways to watch movies and listen to music, its not even worth the hassle and risk of lawsuit.

If you are going to pirate things these days, you better be smart about it.

The U.S. Copyright Group has already filed lawsuits over about 10 other films, including Uwe Boll's "Far Cry,

BWA-HAHAHAHAHA! The reason people downloaded it was because they didn't want their friends knowing they were watching it.

What about the people who got it from all the various storage sites?

/got it months before the Oscars and still haven't watched it

Note "Oscar" =/= $$, hence the use of the phrase "did poorly".

I didn't realize that the movie only grossed $16 million in the U.S. That's is absolutely ridiculous. They should have hired some famous actresses to appear topless. That would have helped bring in more money.

/Is there anything that more boobies can't solve?

2010-05-12 05:35:27 PM
Article says it made only 16 million. Another site says it cost 11 mill to make.

Oh noes! They only made 5 million dollars! Poor bastards.

unheatedgarage: But the movie wasn't very good.

This. I just saw it recently, and I do not understand what all the fuss was about. There was no plot, and the characters were contrived, two-dimensional cliches.

I gave up and downloaded it. I still have it in my queue but it's still LONG WAIT. I don't even think that it played here.

Good movie though, I enjoyed it.

good news. when this illegal downloading is stopped movies will drop back into the under $5 range at the theater and maybe less when they come out on DVD.

d00d it's all about fighting the Man and the neo-cryptofascist concept of "intellectual property". It's not about the money!

The movie was pretty boring, to be honest. But it did have one really funny part.

"GIVE HER YO SPEEERM"

Yeah, be directed by Cameron's ex-wife so the academy (Who HATES Cameron's attitude) thought they'd stick it to him. Being a 'message movie' didn't hurt either.

/Not saying that Avatar should have won best picture
//Am saying that a movie that doesn't even make 20 million dollars in the entire world shouldn't be given anything but a pat on the head.

tweekster: They are going to sue over a bunch of crappy films so they can claim piracy was why they did poorly?

That's exactly what they tried to do with the PC game "Two Worlds". "Wah, wah, the pirates ruined the sales of our game." No, slapdash design and pathetic dialogue ruined the sales of their little game. This does appear to be similarly motivated.

Word of mouth is the truest marketing out there. If you suck, people are going to find out before they waste their money on you. If you're great, people are going to find out about that too, from pirates even, and may still feel like going to the store to get it.

The movie was only really properly released after the oscar nomination/win.

Anyone interested had already seen the movie at that point. Despite it not being in theatres here (Netherlands)...

So yeah, they missed their own boat. dummies.

Download via Usenet and you don't have to worry about this. They can sue for copyright infringement with torrent users because they're uploading the data as well. With Usenet they can only sue the single person that uploaded.

I support the artist's right to get paid for their work. That's why I pay $1 to rent the thing, then rip it to my HDD.

I'm tempted to download it now, just because I can.

Lol, they are whitewashing their own message boards:

I would pay the settlement offer immediately on this. I tried to fight this on the Uncross the Stars movie and paid my lawyer $4700 before he advised me to just pay $2500 and settle. Just glad it's over--Definitely not downloading w/out paying anymore.

I saw that movie in the theater cuz I like the main guy (from Transformers), but kept waiting for the plot to start. It never does. It's just a "personality build tension" film. This is why women directors suck. They try to do action and screw it up. Stick to stuff like "Lost in Translation" ladies, that movie had appropriate plot for the subject.

Bombs and stuff, that's boy shiat. Stay out.

2010-05-12 05:45:38 PM
Sorry, but any industry that's willing to pay 'stars' millions of dollars more than the effort and skill required justifies, then turn around and lie to me to convince me I should go to the theatre and pay 15 to watch it (and another 15 for popcorn and pop, because the licensing is so bloody expensive that's how the theatre stays in the black) regardless of the quality...fark them.

I have a LOT of DVDs. I buy them if I like the movie, usually from the used or bargain bin, but I buy them. I have downloaded a lot of movies, and if I keep them, I bought the DVD and just want a copy for my media center. If I didn't keep them, it's because they were crap that weren't even worth having for free.

Honestly, who could watch Ultraviolet and then actually be content they paid $30 for the DVD???

The Hurt Locker did not deserve to win Best Picture.

Inglourious Basterds was way better. It was more dynamic, more involved and more entertaining.

It's faster and more convenient. Until the legitimate services catch up in terms of usability (I'm not holding my breath) they are just not going to make much of a dent in "piracy".

If you are going to pirate things these days, you better be smart about it.

Right, because of the dozens of people who have been subpoenaed. Out of tens of millions. This isn't the first "ZOMG we're going to sue EVERYBODY!" - the results are usually not that impressive.

/ am I still getting sued if I got bored and didn't finish watching it?

Bittorrent is old hat

Much better to have a nice community in your pocket that uploads everything you can imagine to megaupload in encrypted password-protected RAR files with nodescript file names

Yeehaw.

I was really excited to see that film. Then I watched it. Absolutely terrible. Even for Tarantino.
