Never heard of Wilco but this is ok. Will check them out now.

Meh.

Tons better than the original, which I had never heard until I sought it out for comparison's sake.

The singer sounds alive. Yay!

Agreed. The original sounds like a minimalist funeral dirge.

wait a minute, this sounds like rock and/or roll (new window)

/didn't think this kinda music got made anymore

I love this kind of sound. I suggest you check them out on iTunes. They just got $9.90 out of me!

This is really good! It reminds me of when Duchamp took a big dump on Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and spread it around. Then all the people who liked the earthy brown tones started calling it better than the original.

2010-05-08 09:14:07 PM
That video led me to a video of them on Chic-G0-Go, which led me to this Link (new window) which had weird white people dancing that reminded me of this Link (new window) classic Bobby Conn Chica-Go-Go appearance

/skip to the end of that first video for some spectacularly dumbass asian chick interviewing the band.

Your whore mouths. Shut them.

Wilco makes rock and roll for grownups.

Wow. I didn't think I would live long enough to see a soul revival!

This was just all KINDS of awesome!

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings with The Heavy opening for them here in two weeks.

Yeah, I'm going.

For values of "rock and roll" that equal "weepy, poorly-sung shoegazing," sure.

/Good songwriting, less-than-inspiring execution
//Son Volt is much better IMO

I like this fine, but anyone saying it is better than the original needs to have their head examined.

You want rock and roll for grown ups?
Get a copy of Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul's album
'Men Without Women'.

THIS is rockandroll for grown ups.

I guess I'll have to go listen to the original again, because the only similarity I remember to the original song and "rock and roll" is that both concepts involve guitars. ;P

Was the "for grownups" comment to insinuate that people who dislike this are childish, or was it an adjective to give the original a free pass for being lame? (THAT WAS A GOOD-NATURED JOKE, don't come at me with venom! :D)

Yes. That was exactly what it was.

Son Volt sucks too, especially after Trace.

As a pretty big fan of Otis, Wilson, Joe Tex, and Bobby Womack, I approve of this cover.

Seconded.

Tonight, I will pray for the first time in my life, and will be for the death of those that disrespect Jeff Tweady's vocals.

Well. I guess maybe this version is more immature. We all know how much the kids like soul music nowadays. .....right? ;)

Seriously, can anybody recommend a song by this group called Wilco that's a great representation of their musical ability? Something very pleasant. I've heard two songs, and so far the guy sounds a bit like a mumbler. Someone teach that guy to project! :D

The couple of songs had a lot of dischordant crap screwing with the vocals, almost drowning them out in places. Can't tell if it's because the noise is too loud or if the voice is too soft. Interesting, in a way.

I've seen JC brooks live in chicago twice and once in Minneapolis. Amazing show, and Jc is a great guy.

Amazing shows...amazing shows

Wonderful music

/glad this got greenlit.

P.S. the album version is a lot more soulful.

I could totally see a soul version of this song working, but I didn't like the vocal phrasing in this arrangement at all. I will check out this band, though.

I would much rather hear a full-on soul rendition of "I'm The Man Who Loves You." Even the TITLE works better as a soul number.

I know this is going to sound very music snobby, but every song on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is immeasurably better within the context of the album as a whole than as a stand-alone number, even the album's best songs (IMO Kamera and Jesus Etc)

Something about this really bothers me. I think it's the idea of making money off ironic covers of an artist's expression of some of the worst moments of their lives.

Here's a nice little ditty off of Wilco's latest album that may be "accessible" to new listeners:

You and I (new window)

Why would you Wanna live
Can't Stand It
A Shot In the Arm
Candy Floss
Summerteeth
ELTshiat, I should have paced myself, that's just the first three albums and doesn't even include Someday Soon, Dreamer In My Dreams, Nothingsevergonnastandinmywayagain... etc etc etc....

Okay, that's a pleasant enough song, I guess. But there's no fire, no verve, no energy. It's comes off like music for Xanax addicts. Jangly and mellow is great, but even their "happy" songs sound morose. And I'm a Smiths fan, so I know from morose.

Don't they ever...you know, rock?

Go back to Uncle Tupelo, the band from which Wilco and Son Volt Sprung post UT breakup. Great stuff and a different type of rocking sound when they wanted to kill us with grunge all the time.

Love Wilco. Love this song. Loved this cover. Will seek out more from these guys.

I love Wilco, and I love soul. But this sounds way too polished and Pro-toolsie. Try the new record by The Mynabirds for something with warmer production.

Confused by this.

Really like it.

Really really don't want to like it.

If only there were a meme I could use to describe this feeling . . .

I can't view the vid because my kid downloaded a YouTube-killing virus & I'm still trying to fix it. But I DO have Being There on my turntable right now.

Monday (I always think of the Florida tag when I hear this) and I Got You are straight-up rock tunes.
