Another source told the Chicago Tribune that Pagano's wallet was found on his body, "along with a copy of Metra's procedures on how to handle a service disruption after a suicide."

Well, isn't that... thoughtful.

/Seriously, though, suicide by train is one of the most selfish ways to go.

I feel bad for the engineer but.....who hasn't wanted to run over their boss with a train every now and them. This guy got to do it.

THIS. Especially for someone who should know how much it traumatizes the engineers.

Andy Samberg and Seth Rogen disapprove. I thought everyone knew that you had to turn into a rocket and fly into the sun to die (like a boss!), not step in front of a train.

Having been on three Metra trains that have had suicide hits, I am *not* getting a kick out of this story.

I mean, damn. He even had the guide to Metra procedures when someone suicides in front of a train in his pocket. So nice to know he was thinking of the folks that had to sift through his remains afterwards.

FTFA:Pagano was 60 years old. His death on Friday, tragic in its own right, would also mark a disturbing trend if it were a suicide -- in the last eight months, two other Chicago political figures under investigation for corruption have also killed themselves.[emphasis added]

Disturbing? Seriously? Now if only Todd Stroger, Richie Daley, and Roland Burris would do this next we'd be doin' OK here.

in all fairness, it would probably be a rough transition. City's so used to running this way, cleaning it up would pose problems.

Man, half of Chicago would wear *white* to that funeral.

I wondered what happened when I got this Metra service alert this morning:

I can understand the act if it were that serious.

BUT COME ON. $56k? That's bad, but not "I have to kill myself to avoid paying 6 months of my salary" bad.

There was an article in one of the Chicago daily papers a few years back about 'suicide by train'.

The article said the average train engineer [non CTA] working in the Chicago area for 20 years will have to live through one of these.

I think they excluded CTA because there are too many slow zones on the CTA due to poor maintenance, for CTA to be an effective alternative for the would be 'suicidal'.

Metra ought to re-write the manual on how to deal with a 'suicide by train'. Halting every train on that track for hours is idiotic.

1st responders should take pics & video, bag and tag the only person involved who got what they came for, and a replacement engineer takes over within one hour. The local fire truck already on scene hoses off the front of the train, and thousands of other peoples lives are not delayed further.

Three. There was the one next to the river, and one of Blagojevich's men who killed himself just before his prison term was about to start. RTFA. Now the Metra boss.

He died as he lived.

56K. When I lived in Chicago, the thing that amazed me about the politicians was, what a bunch of pikers they seemed to be. That was maybe an illusion- John Boyles only stole quarters, but he stole 16 million of them. But I remember Aldermen getting convicted for taking bribes of a few grand. Even Blago, he just wanted a million for a Senate seat? Had he been paying attention? Didn't he see John Corzine pay something like $40 million for his seat over in New Jersey? These guys are like still living in the 1920s or something.

I dimly remember some Intel manager committing "suicide by light rail" (MAX train) when I first moved to Portland, OR back in 2000. I'm pretty sure the trains were back running in under 2 hours....

/ had to take a shuttle bus on my commute that day...

Damnit, where's a conspiracy theorist to link this to Obama when you need one?

I would expect some enterprising soul to have already set up a frequently-updated "Obama Body Count" page complete with t-shirts to buy through Cafe Press.

Internet, you disappoint me.
