I'm gonna repeat what others have said - vet, now. At that age, an infection or abscess can turn serious in a hurry. Under no circumstances would I recommend trying to treat the cat with an OTC drug.

I came to the same conclusion right after I posted the question, called my friend and she contacted the vet. Babette's home and she's eating so hopefully it's not as bad as it seemed to me. Thanks everybody.

Now ferfer72 about those pain pills - I could sure use some. I fell yesterday while walking a dog that I take care of. I have swollen bruises, cuts and scrapes from my left knee to my lip and everywhere in between. I feel like I've been hit by a truck and look like someone punched me in the face. Every time I pass a mirror my lip is fatter and my chin is blacker. Advil and ice are just not cutting it anymore so if you have any spare prescription pain pills could you send them my way please.

Thanks, I'm just glad that I was so intent on watching Doris (my canine charge who is half Great Pyrenees, half Newfoundland and 100% chicken, and was scared of the Pug behind the fence), the Census Lady (who was convinced Doris was going to chew her foot off) and the pug (who was letting Doris know that even though he was 1/10th her size he was ready to take her on) that I didn't realize I was falling till I hit the ground. So I didn't try to break my fall which would probably have ended up doing even more damage. I guess subconsciously rather than risk anybody else (human or canine) getting hurt I just threw myself into the sidewalk to break the building tension between the other three - it worked. I was the only one who got hurt. Thankfully I fell on top of the leash which kept Doris from fleeing in complete terror because her only protection (me) had just been taken down.

My cousin and his wife have a pair of great Pyrenees with opposite courage levels. Once, his wife was out walking them when they saw a rabbit. She was "nearly torn in half" when one dog decided to chase the rabbit, and the other decided to run away from the rabbit.
