The pair were charged after Port Authority Police got an anonymous call at 7:15 a.m., reporting an incident on the secure side of Checkpoint 1 inside Terminal C. Officials said the marijuana appeared to have fallen out of the pocket of an unidentified man before several screeners briefly gathered around the bag, and Francois then directed Morris to throw it in the trash.

Is it just me, or is it bizarre that someone would just happen to call about this?

What the actual headline should read:

Newark airport security accused of not reporting, "throwing away" marijuana found on terminal floor

2010-05-05 04:43:35 PM
The screeners do not seem to know
Where all of the nickel-bags go?
Then here's what we tell 'em:
Why not try to sell 'em
To Oakland, since they're running low?

people should start dropping bags of oregano while standing in the security line.

That's got to be -some- security camera that can ID pot in a bag on the floor...

There is nothing as deeply satisfying as finding a bag of weed on the ground. Unless someone else sees you finding it.

/Then nothing sucks worse than finding a bag of weed on the ground.

So?

They tossed it in the trash. Not like they sat there and smoked it. Are the cops just mad they didn't get to put it in their evidence locker and replace it with oregano?

Well, they put the baggie under some paper cups, and let the cops find it the first two times. Then, when the cops put down some real money, they remembered they "threw it in the trash," grabbed the table, and ran off into the crowd.

I completely disagree. Just as likely it's a bag of urine-soaked oregano or dirt weed dusted with PCP. You'll never find that free pillowcase of Sour Diesel, though long may you look...

Money on the ground is good. Drugs on the ground are bad. ALWAYS buy your drugs from a reputable dealer.

The more probable scenario is that they tossed it in the trash with the intention of returning shortly to untoss it.

There are a gang of cameras in each and every checkpoint.

Good thing it wasn't a bottle of water. That flight would have been delayed for at least 5 hours while cavity searches were conducted.

OK, so let me get this straight ... the one time in the history of man kind, A TSA screener uses
his head by not wasting a cops time over a silly bag of weed, and wouldn't you just know it, some anal retentive bastard is there to report it. This sad sad tale is the definition of buzz kill, folks.

They must have been some sub-standard TSA employees (yeah I know it's probably a low bar) to get canned over something like that. I could see if they had misappropriated it, but they threw it the fark out. Give 'em a written reprimand, but firing them...seems over the top.

It's a no-win situation. Turn it in and do gobs of paperwork (without even a chance of bringing anyone to justice), or throw it away and cause a shiatstorm.

As I've stated before, I used to work for the TSA (the law enforcement branch, which I had to convince a farker who was a screener, actually existed - the REAL cops with REAL guns and REAL badges). Not long after the TSA beast was brought to life, an off duty officer who wanted to carry on a plane, and had all the paperwork in place, was shut down by a screener in the Atlanta airport. I am not "profiling" here, but the screener had three inch purple fingernails, a bad weave, a horrible attitude, and refused to look at the paper that allowed him to carry off duty. She confiscated his weapon and dumped the spare ammo, magazines and all, in the same trash bin that they put water bottles and other off limits debris into. Yes, she was counseled and yes, the situation was rectified. But I stand by my assertion that many (not all) of the TSA screener corps couldn't get a job guarding a skating rink.

Yes, legalize it already. Tax it, eliminate the national debt. My happy California native ass is already plotting how to move home after I retire, and that adds to the allure.

seriously. in younger days had to beat the feet way too many times. bags & bones get tossed from pockets, from car windows, you name it. found pills? nom nom nom, whether it's on the streets of NYC or in the bottom of a pocketbook. a dealer may have found or stole what he just sold you so what's the difference.

i do have a story that would suggest doing the opposite. (not really, most stuff you find on the ground was just dropped by somebody waaaaay too high notice.)

it was bonnaroo 3 or 4 years ago (can't remember) and my friends and i were waiting on ween to play. it was hot, and we were out in the sun, and we got the idea to take some dead grass on the ground and roll it up in a paper. we lit one end and let it burn for a second so it would look like somebody just spaced out and dropped it, then tossed it over near a group of young looking kids. sure enough, they picked it up and tried to smoke it. the funniest part was that they didn't give up after the nasty taste caused coughing fits. they just kept right on smoking until it went out and they got the idea to see what was in it.

If it had been a bag of mysterious white powder, though, what would they have done?

1. Assumed it was cocaine or meth and tossed it out?
OR
2. Assumed it was anthrax and shut down the entire terminal?

Because it would make a big difference, depending on what was actually in the bag, ya know.

Ha ha TSA has real cops. They are called Federal Air Marshals (FAM). But I will say, I know a FAM who met a girl in the smoking lounge who laughed about how she got a doob past the screeners. He could have busted her but he didn't. He figured she was a harmless small fry and moved on.

That's the problem with government jobs in general: they are equally attractive to the sort of person who wants to serve their community and make reasonable decisions, and to the sort of person who wants to get a job where they can be worthless and not get fired. Needless to say, the two groups hate each other.

"Somebody" probably wanted rid of one of those two TSA employees. "Somebody" probably arranged for the bag of reefer to be dropped on the ground in perfect view of the camera, thinking the employee would take it. When they didn't pocket it, "somebody" had them charged with this bullshiat and had it released to the media.

"Somebody" needs their ass stomped.

That half nug in a baggie had a street value of 37 million dollars, of course they're being charged.
