These people are walking past the bird's nest. The bird is defending its nest/offspring. This is not...oh wait. Ok. Everything is in its place.

There's a Cooper's hawk that lives in the woods behind my house. When I go for a hike back there, he gets pissed off if I get within fifty feet of him. He squawks for a bit, then swoops down at me, and repeats as necessary.

I'd show you pics, but it's hard to focus on a bird when he's making a beeline toward your face. He's gotten within a couple of feet of me several times now, and I expect this to end badly for one of us eventually.

For the short time I lived in Portland/Beaverton I used to have a run in with a black bird off of a remote country rode while riding my road bike.
The thing would shoot out from the bushes and go after my helmet and back pockets on my jersey. I later found out that I wasn't the only cyclist having issues with the bird after finding a local cycling blog..
/good times..

pansies, a real man would grab the bird by the collar and demand it give an appropriate rationale for it's behavior. Then throw it against a wall and walk away.

Birds can be amazingly territorial sometimes. I was divebombed repeatedly by a male Costa's hummingbird once; thing probably weight a couple ounces at most, and it came after 130-pound me without hesitation. (cool story)

The bird in the story probably has a nest nearby. Unless it goes for the eyes, it's unlikely to be able to cause real injury. The folks of West Palm Beach who are getting so freaked out about a songbird should just feel lucky they're too far south to deal with the Great Grey Owl. Those things can actually hurt you.

Nesting season made the farking news? I'd love to see these idiots try to get past the bottle-brush tree full of blackbirds in my neighbor's yard. In a few weeks, they will notice a few dead baby birds that fell out of nests while trying to fly, and we'll get a report about some unidentified new horror killing off all the baby birds!

Any good reporter would have ditched the "attack bird" angle, and switched to a "some humans are so stupid it only takes them a year to forget that birds nest around here" angle.

Diving birds aren't very hard to kill with a well-aimed pimp slap, though sometimes they require a follow-up stomp to finish the job. You can skip the stomp if you're in a hurry, but leaving an injured bird to flap around on the ground is kind of a dick move.

Our usual sketch artist is not available
today so Little Billy is drawing the sketches.

His mother has him on weekends, so if you're flying
out of Denver, wave to the air traffic control tower.
Billy likes to wave to strangers. We encourage him.
