Why would they want to leave during the only decent time to be in Canada?

2010-05-04 04:48:50 PM
Goodness!

We spent all winter trying to keep our igloos from melting.

Yes, but at least there's daylight, unlike the 6-month Canadark.

I'm too busy playing hockey and drinking Labatt Blue and Canadian Club to go on vacation. And working for my uncle's Igloo and Igloo Repair and Accessory business.

I earn three beaver pelts a week!

America is a vacation.

Pssst. We vacation in the part of the year where it isn't nice out (read: Other than summer).

2010-05-04 06:06:58 PM
Considering a large number of Canada is heavily taxed but well taken care off, there is little rich and the poor is far more healthier than the American counterpart.

The vacation thing sucks and frankly, surprises me.

Broke my ankle last summer playing roller hockey. From break to cast-on was 3 hours. Total cost to me? $3.75 for parking.

The thought of "oh crap, how much is this gonna cost me?" never entered my mind.

Why would anyone vacation anywhere but Canada in the Summertime. This place is gorgeous!!!

I'll save my trips out of country for the colder months.

We do our summer vacationing right here.

Summer plans ;

I get three day weekends because I work 10 hr shifts.

Will be camping every two weeks either in Algonquin or on my Hubby's family farmland (350 acres right on a lake)

The weekends we are home we will be holding yardsales to fund our upcoming move and get rid of unneeded crap. Our friends come over and we have a Barbecue in the back yard.

Aug 14th we get married

Two week drive across Canada stopping to camp for a few days at a time and fish and biker ride Algonquin, Banf, and Jasper and hopefully make it to Deep Bay depending on our schedule. Honeymoon. Show hubby around Vancouver and such.

Really wouldn't dream of leaving Canada in the summertime. Not sure why anyone would want to really.

I live in Prince Edward Island. Summer comes to me, I don't have to go to it.

Obviously I do, and I see where you're going at.
I don't have any figures comparing the increased taxes Canadians pay vs. paying premiums to an insurance company. It may even out, I'm not sure.
But the security I have knowing that I'll always be covered, no matter if I change jobs, lose my job, or any other kind of situation that could be beyond my control, is worth it in my mind.

Seems like another case of "it's right in our backyard but we never think of visiting". There are tons of places for Canadians to vacation in-country, especially in the summer, usually very close to wherever they happen to reside.

/Damned if I'd visit Calgary in January though

From my front door I can ski tour to amazing skiing, walk 3 km to a world class ski resort, hit miles of x-country ski trails, fly fish, golf, rock climb, ice climb, mountain bike, mountaineer, hunt, ride dirt bike or quad on miles of trails, swim in alpine lakes, hike, etc.

Most springs you can ski powder snow in the morning and play golf in the afternoon.

That said, I shovel a hell of a lot of snow and well, there are pretty much zero jobs here.

So, half of Canadians can't afford a summer vacation. That's not too bad. Three quarters of Americans can't find Canada. On a map. In broad daylight. Or maybe it's only half of Americans...oh, never mind.

That's not what the member of your government (premier Danny Williams) thought when he went to the U.S. to get a surgery when it was his own health at stake... No argument that many parts of U.S. system, such as tax incentives for tying health insurance to employment were not horribly broken, though.
