I've heard about this but the stories never seem entirely convincing. In this one it's the Pentagon that's said to be investing millions in research.

Doesn't it seem more normal that some University or something would be most interested? Or maybe a whole lot of Universities?

Still, it would be a very cool thing if true.

Hmm, I wonder if Muslims would be allowed to use this stuff?

They don't have access to large numbers of severe trauma victims like the military does.

Oh, and patents (new window).

I hope they're doing research on using sheep's bladders to prevent birth defects as well.

Pork chops, bacon, ham and now pixie dust. Yet another useful item which all seem to magically appear from some mythical beast.

I kept waiting to read "April Fools" at the end. Is this for real?

oh yes, some "magical animal".

What will they think of next??

I remember this. There was a story like 2 years ago on fark about a man who regrew his finger with this.

The main topic discussed in that thread was that it wouldnt work on larger body parts.

I'm also curious what led them to pig bladder.

Did they just keep grinding up organs and sprinkling them on gaping wounds until they hit one that worked?

"Pheasants are a no-go. Pigs are next on the list here."

What, no tail for them?

'The Extra Cellular membrane had not only made muscle but also built nerves. I could feel my limb tingling as the new tissues grew.'

Sorry but I have to call shenanigans. Striated muscle does not regrow. Bone, fat and liver will regrow or repair itself depending on the mechanism of injury but muscle does not. Liver injuries from the usual farker methods are also not self healing. Everything else heals by scar formation.

2010-05-03 12:59:17 PM
Through much scrying I have found the link to the first story about pig's bladder powder.

CBS had a very in depth look at this on 60 minutes back a few months ago.

The most interesting example was this man with throat cancer. They removed the cancer and surrounding tissue and then implanted this thing in his throat that held the powder. It then regrew his throat just like new. Pretty crazy stuff.

The totality of your research on this topic consists of reading that one sentence from this one article, doesn't it?

This guy can regrow most of a missing limb and yet he's still bald...

2010-05-03 01:08:59 PM
This stuff really sounds amazing, almost magical in what it can do. I'm so happy to hear that it's helping reduce amputations and help people lead normal lives. These really are amazing times in which we live.

2010-05-03 01:20:51 PM
They sure did overuse the word "magic" in that article. As if no one has any idea how cells react to collagen.

I work down the hall from the lab that develops this stuff. It's pretty sweet. They let me borrow some of the "expired" pixie dust when I had a nasty cut on my thumb. Healed up in a few days, no scar.

From TFA:Surgeons have already used the dust to save several soldiers so badly mutilated that they were at risk of amputation.

Wow, having to amputate a whole soldier, that's pretty rough

and...

Magically over a period of several weeks new tissue and muscle grew until the wound was filled.

Yes, magically! Clearly Dr. Wolf got his Ph.D. In Wizardry!

/Sigh, Daily Fail

If they can really get something like this to work, it would be worth every bit it cost.

I've seen enough stories about people who lost spouses/significant others due to some serious injury causing massive scars thanks to this BS war for oil/WMD's/BS and I'd rather not hear any more of them...

I know, I know, welcome to Fark and quit looking if I don't want to see.

LOL Let me get this straight...

Your rebuttal of this new medical technology consists of anecdotal evidence of a bunch of nameless 'scientists' saying 'nyuh uh'.

Just so we're all clear...
