Ugh. I love Johnny Depp, but those movies were terrible. I might've mugged him just for that awful role.

You know, it's odd, because I feel as though I SHOULD feel contempt for him. He's obviously a great actor, but he's chosen nothing but crappy roles for YEARS now. I mean, seriously, what's the last good movie he was in? I don't mean a movie he was good in, I mean a good movie.

Also, those ridiculous clothes...but then you hear about something like this, or him leaving his favorite waiter an extravagant tip. I don't even know anyone that dislikes the guy, and I know some serious haters. I'm sure they exist, but he's probably too busy drinking red wine in between bouts of banging his model wife in his huge-ass bedroom in his huge-ass house in the South of France and then going to shread some electric guitar in what I can only imagine is a home studio to care.

Personally, if I was the mugger I would have been more worried that he'd slip into his Sweeney Todd role rather than Jack Sparrow.

Baldanders: I mean, seriously, what's the last good movie he was in? I don't mean a movie he was good in, I mean a good movie.

Public Enemies, Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Sweeney Todd
...

...that being said, it simply makes no sense to hold actors to account if they are "good" in a film, but the film itself ends up being "bad." These days, actors sign on before the script is even finished, to say nothing of the special effects and the cinematography. Can you tell a winner from a dud when it's barely 15% complete? Of course not. Will Smith and Sean Connery passed on The Matrix, probably because it sounded like some seriously geeky crap when it was pitched to them -- the two weirdos who made "Bound" want to make a kung-fu movie about evil computers? And then Connery signed on to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen probably because his agent told him how revered this Alan Moore fellow is. Can't miss with an Alan Moore property, Sean...

....there's no way to tell these things. Actors can only go on the strength of the concept, and the reputation of the people involved. They can't make everyone else do their jobs.

And sure, Jack Sparrow is starting to get a bit stale after that third Pirates movie. But can you imagine how "ungrateful" and "contemptuous of the fans" he'd be if he refused?

I know this is an old story, but Johnny's young daughter got hella-sick in Paris and a hospital did a bang-up job keeping her alive. As repayment, the next time he was in town he showed up unannounced in the children's ward - dressed as Jack Sparrow - and spent a solid couple of hours walking around singing songs and telling stories to entertain the kids.

Class friggin' act, that guy...

I like him for his hotness, and I like his acting... I can't think of a performance that sucked, really. Sweeny Todd surprised me in its awesomeness. Most recently, though, I like him for supporting my pet cause, the West Memphis Three.
Just last week, the stepfather of one of the victims of that crime (who I think is guilty as hell) spoke out against Depp for supporting the WM3. And you know, if you're guilty of a thing like that and someone like Johnny Depp decides to step in and help sort it out, you gotta kind of know you're farked.

Can I have "Benny and June" for the win? But really I enjoyed almost all the movies he is in. And on a personal note I think he is a very cool individual. I do hate him some what for the fact that he could be bagging some legendary tail yet he stays faithful to just one woman.

I'm no huge Depp fan, but I think this is way off base. While the movies he's in aren't always good in the final cut, his performances almost always are interesting. More than that, you can see that Depp has worked with some of the most interesting directors in the business. Sure, some of these directors also make flops, but Depp seems to be seeking the experience of working with these people and it looks to me like he has put a lot of effort into working with some of these names.

Ex: Jim Jarmusch, Oliver Stone, John Waters, Terry Gilliam, Roman Polanski. Even if you think these guys are hacks, they are quite unique in terms of having their own style. Just because the finished product of a movie turns out bad doesn't necessarily mean you should fault Depp for choosing it. He obviously is quite involved in choosing his roles and knows what he is doing.

Also donated about a million bucks to the hospital AND got Disney to match his donation.

I always wonder if his class act has something to do with having moved away from Hollywood and its chronic toxicity.

1) Is someone insinuating that Mr. Depp is not one of the greatest actors of our generation? I mean really? I apologize if every movie he chooses doesnt have bald eagles crying blood, but his box office sales alone show that he has an incredibly large fan base.

2) You only hear good stories about this guy. Wonderful family man, good Samaritan, and top notch philanthropist. In short, Mr. Depp is why we can have good things.

MeanJean: I didn't think Johnny Depp could get any cooler. Wow.

One more story. When Johnny was filming that period gangster thing he did not too long ago, some kid saw his fedora and said "nice hat." Depp says "do you want it?" The kid lights up and says "YES!" Depp says "it's wardrobe, so you can't have it now, but after we're done it's yours. Two months later, after most mega-stars would have completely forgotten the entire incident, a box shows up at the kid's house. In it? The hat, and loads of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" swag for the rest of the family.

No. That dude was crazy but not guilty. The two hairs found in the shoelace belonged to Terry Hobbs and his friend David Jacoby. The DNA technology wasn't available then, but it is now. The hairs were inside the knots used to tie up one of the boys. He tried to say, "Well yeah, my hair might've been on his shoelace, he lived with me...blah blah" But the hairs were in the knot that tied up one of the other two victims. INSIDE the knot. Whoopsie.

The guy you're talking about, John Byers, was batshiat to be sure, though. If you look at the "Paradise Lost" documentary on YouTube... THAT is what batshiat insane looks like.
Now the (imo) guilty dude, Hobbs, is all "Depp needs to mind his own farking business!" Ha!

I don't know which is really worse: killing three 8-year-olds or letting three other teenagers rot in jail for it (one is on Death Row.) The WMPD, the DA, and everyone involved in this travesty needs to be shot. Sorry, but this pisses me off.

Meh, for those complaining that Depp's not in "good" movies, realize that this is part of the reason we think he's a cool guy. He takes roles he finds interesting and works with people he likes rather than chasing the biggest paycheck or the oscars all of the time. That's a pretty good sign you're not a douche in Hollywood.

1. Popularity is not indicative of skill. Look at Paris Hilton.

2. Don't tell me what I hear.

I don't have a problem with him. Though I don't worship anybody. What's worse, is these people, 90 % of the time, if they're in public, they want to be treated like strangers. Why? Because they are. Even if you've seen ever single movie they've ever made, every E! special with them on it, you totally know jack farking shiat about them. Many of them have the same demons we do.

Yet, even on a site as supposedly smart as fark, I can't help but run into you people. So the guy bought off a mugger. Big deal. That's why, in the thread, everyone re-lives their favorite moments from his life, or just offers up hymnals about his sainthood.

I dunno, I saw Burton's Wonderland yesterday (if it's something I want to see on the big screen but don;t feel too strongly about I wait till it comes to the local $2.50 theatre) and while the movie itself had probleams, I really did like Depp's choice to put a bit of Highland warrior into his portrayal of the Mad Hatter

Disney has Cap'n Sparrow in the parks. I've heard rumors that occasionally, when Depp is in the area of either World or Land, he'll ask if he can do a set as Sparrow (and of course they let him) - the guests can never tell the difference.

The number one sign he's not a douche is he didn't try to adult-ify his name.

He was Johnny Depp as a teenager. He didn't try to make us call him John Depp when he took on grownup roles.

Johnny Depp didn't need to change his name to win respect. He earned it through being a respectable actor.
