Kentucky Ice storms: "Obama's Katrina"

Confederate Yankee: "Obama's 'Katrina on Ice'" A February 1 Confederate Yankee post titled "Obama's 'Katrina on Ice'" asserted:

More than 700,000 homes are still without power in Kentucky due to a massive ice storm that struck the state six days ago, forcing Gov. Steve Beshear to mobilize his entire state's Army and Air National Guard, a total of 4,600 men and the largest call-out in Kentucky's history.

FEMA has apparently been a no-show.

Hey, look, it's the preliminary damage assessment (new window) for the disaster.

The governor asked for a Federal declaration on February 1, and it was granted and signed on February 5.

If you were complaining about it on February 1, it's probably because your idiot governor didn't ask for assistance until then.

No, it means it was a monumental catastrophe wrought by God upon mankind because of the sinning, blaspheming, heretical promotion of sodomy by the liberals, and therefor excuses our leadership's utter failure to deal with it. For who are they to meddle with the will of God?

Yeah, but if Kerry got elected, the Republicans would be in office now. The Dems would have gotten blamed for this collapse because it happened while they were in office. As much as I hate to say it, not getting Kerry elected is probably better in the long run because the people who caused the collapse actually got blamed for it.

First off - this is the 'Republicans', not 'Conservatives. And to answer your question - no, to a republican it is entirely possible (and indeed quite logical) to call something 'Obama's Katrina' and imply massive failure while at the exact same time believing that Bush made no mistakes while responding to the disaster.

Orwell called this sort of reasoning 'Doublethink'.

"To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself. That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word 'doublethink' involved the use of doublethink>

You know, in mid-2012, when Obama suspends the elections and marches an army of UN peacekeepers through northeast Indiana on his way to rounding up the Real Americans...the pundits are going to be speechless at the perfectness of the analogy, but it will have been used up dozens of times over on everything from health care reform to his NCAA bracket with 68 teams on it.

2010-05-01 08:33:53 PM
Obama is too incompetent to handle this. Besides, he's busy being an elite liberal hellbent on continuing his evil push to ruin America by turning it into a hellscape of equality and social justice.

2010-05-01 08:33:56 PM
Blaming Obama is not going to stick with anyone outside of the rabid right who blame him for everything anyway.

There can be eighty Obama's Katrinas. Obama will never be held responsible for anything negative by the far majority of the media, whether he is actually to blame or not.

It's not in the script or on the teleprompter.

2010-05-01 08:42:23 PM
These attacks would carry more weight if they were lobbed at everythong Obama did.

Coast Guard was on the scene day 1. The problem was underestimated by everyone, coast guard and BP alike.

I ask, in all honesty, what more could he have done?
