Ouch. Good one. :)

Oh, and subby, it's an outdoor festival. Hell, I'd rather listen to EW&F than Aretha, anyway. Although, 2008's Jazzfest is hard to beat in my mind -- Plant/Krauss doing a slow acoustic "When the Levee Breaks" arrangement in front of what is arguably the largest concert venue in NOLA. It...was...awesome.

I do believe, however, that her hat will be having two shows.

So what's it like listening to Cold Play while you submitted this, Subby?

Art Garfunkel should have don't the same thing last weekend and just let Paul Simon do the show alone. Garfunkel's voice cracked louder than thunder after about 3 songs and he stunk up the stage the rest of the show.

Cool Story Alert:

LAst Jazzfest was '01. Saw Dave Matthews Band before they sucked. Lenny Kravitz sat in on All along the Watchtower and Paul Simon took over for Dave for a rendition of Me and Julio down by the scoolyard.

End Cool Story:

/Thanks Bro.

Fark Aretha Franklin.

Yeah she's a great singer, but this is the second year in a row. At least last year she cancelled way before people got their tickets to see her (more or less). Hopefully, she won't be invited back.

I'd take Earth, Wind, & Fire over her anyday of the week.

Aretha Franklin is a national treasure.

/and yeah, she's as big as a national monument. So what? Aretha is one of the all time greats. Go look at Taylor Swift if you want an erection.

A. They don't suck
B. Ironically, 2001 was by far the worst year touring-wise they've ever had due to the Everyday album.

Also, while the idea of Lenny Kravitz on Watchtower sounds awesome, that particular version is an absolute mess, since Lenny seemed to forgot the lyrics midway through singing his verse.

Franklin has suffered from fear of flying for years, which isn't necessarily an excuse, but she is notorious for canceling concert dates because of it.

Also the woman is almost seventy years old so there maybe some kind of medical reason for the cancellation.

/Sixty-eight years old and the woman still dresses as if she weighs a hundred thirty pounds. Sigh.

After reading about Aretha Franklin's diva behavior at the 25th anniv. concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I am not surprised one bit that she cancelled.

I haven't been back since Katrina though. I didn't want to listen to all the whining.

I've always thought that her parents must have hated her. Aretha is just too close to urethra to be a concidence.

Also, her music sucks, so it kind of fits.

I went in '06 and there wasn't any whining. BTW, is it still whining if something really bad happened?

Look at it this way: they're whining because their city was destroyed in a natural disaster. He's whining because he has to listen. Who's the real whiner here?

Just popped in to say she's in really bad health. I saw her perform at the Fourth of July concert at the Capitol last summer (the one that's always on PBS). She sang the national anthem at the beginning, all in her low register, and then left the stage, carefully and slowly. Kind of looked like my grandmother toward the end of her life. Also just found out she was hospitalized for quite a while in 2004 with an "undisclosed illness."

Sure, she'd do better to avoid trying to set gigs in stone. But I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

/still commanded that stage like no body else up there.

Veteran R&B band Earth Wind & Fire has been booked as her last-minute replacement.

AboveTheStarsOfGod: /aretha doing nessun dorma ftw

I know a lot of classical purists had issues with her performance of that piece, and while I disagree I can respect their view. But dayum, to walk onstage with 15 minutes notice and give that performance on international television? That's the stuff of legend.

Meanwhile Taylor Swift can't even duet with Stevie Nicks without her precious auto-tune.

Aretha and Van Morrison were the only two reasons I was considering going down for the second weekend after doing the first. I'll be seeing her in Birmingham Sunday night if she doesn't cancel that as well.

And I'll be in front of the BJCC Monday night trying to find tickets from a scalper to see Van Morrison (he sold out in about 3-4 hours).

And to the previous poster who wishes Garfunkel had canceled too:
Agreed. I felt embarrassed for him.

2010-05-01 01:54:04 AM
Yeah...I'm thinking y'all really ought not to diss Aretha Franklin. I mean, come on. That hat.

2010-05-01 01:49:47 PM
1) Aretha's 70 and has health problems. I'm not gonna rag on her because:

2) She was one of the greatest real R&B artists who has ever lived. Go back and listen to her Atlantic sides back in the 60s and tell me that she wasn't stunning.

3) The tripe that they call "R&B" these days is a travesty and barely qualifies as music, let alone R&B. Aretha, Otis Redding, Booker T & The MGs, Wilson Pickett, Big Joe Turner, Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, Sam & Dave, Betty Wright, The Bar-Kays... That is rhythm and blues. The good stuff.
