Perfect situation when the asshat that is at 100% fault winds up only covering his/her own vehicle and you're stuck with higher insurance (and a deductible) because the police didn't file the report... just one word against another unless a photo can show who did what.

Doesn't even matter here. I had picture proof of an accident which was the other persons fault just outside of King Of Prussia 2 years ago and the police wouldn't accept it as proof, and so the person insurance company said too bad.

WeenerGord: The funny thing is that women are actually better drivers than men, and get an insurance break because of it.

No, women get in fewer accidents overall because they drive less. Women get in more accidents per mile driven.

2010-04-30 01:27:46 AM
Other states have been doing this for years, and insurance is cheaper. About women drivers....they actually cause more accidents and property damage in my state, but fewer fatalities. They get in more fender benders but fewer high speed wrecks. So insurance rates are still higher for men to pay for the hormone filled speed freaks. I thinks (without citation) that the National average relects the same thing. too lazy to find the article with the stats.

It's like this in Seattle. Last year, my wife got hit by another driver in MY car. It was totaled but luckily no one was hurt. When she called the cops, they basically told her to move the car to the side of the road and call a tow truck and have a nice focking day. I couldn't believe it. The other driver owned up to it and her insurance covered it, but holy shiat.

Think that's a cool story bro?

6 days later, an old lady crossed into my lane and hit ME in MY WIFE'S car and totaled that one too. The old lady was clutching the chest of her shirt, breathin' all heavy, I thought she was gonna drop dead on the spot. Cops asked me if anybody was injured, I said "No, but the old lady looks like she's about to have a heart attack."
Cops: Well, if she's not injured, we can't do anything. Have a nice day.

Turned out we were only a few blocks from the old lady's house, so I walked her home and we exchanged info. Before I could leave, her son walks in, looks at me like "Who the fock is this guy?!" She goes into the story, all nervous like, tells him it was all her fault. I thought his head was gonna explode.

Called my wife and said, "I'll give you 3 guesses what just happened to me..."

She says, "No focking way..."

Ok, cool story bro

This story is really hard to explain without drawing a picture because it involved alot of swerving. But I was driving down the road...when a biatch on her cellphone in her SUV tried to make a Uturn RIGHT on the highway, crossing in front of me.

Long story short...I was not in an accident but in hindsight I would have broadsided the broad.

Could have used the money from the lawsuit...

Doesn't everyone take such precautions?

Exactly! To really fark up while driving, you have to be male.

On a serious note, I'm not sure this is a good idea. Fender benders fark traffic over hard when there isn't a cop telling the two to pull it over to the side of the road. And many insurance companies look for a cops report to see if they are going to shell out money. And who the hell calls a cop if there isn't real damage?

Philly is insane. A friend of mine has had an interesting two months. A few nights ago some lady doused herself in gasoline and lit a match. Then, a couple of weeks before that one of her neighbors was stabbed to death by said neighbors boyfriend. Inner Houston is downright droll compared to the action she's been around.

They act like accidents are such a hassle. Boo hoo, they're not such a problem that it prevents them from writing tickets to one party or the other.

People aren't being raped or stabbed every second of the day (well, places other than Philly or Detroit) so a few accident reports won't kill them.

People don't mind some of their tax dollars being used to prevent some insurer from raising their rates because they don't have the opinion of an officer to say they weren't at fault. No fault states are ridiculous as it gives the insurers an excuse to raise everybody's rates.

If it's truly a burden, give your rookie ticket-writers the training/authority to handle minor accidents.

2010-04-30 02:53:49 AM
stupid me: Other states have been doing this for years, and insurance is cheaper.

Not really, they just moved the cost limit up in any areas because if you caused a ding, it's not worth writing a report over. But it doesn't take much to pass a $1000 minimum damage limit that our cops use.

2010-04-30 03:23:21 AM
I'll concede that women are probably safer drivers but not better drivers.

Safer meaning that even though you'll most likely get into more accidents with a woman at the helm, they'll more likely be fender benders and less threatening.

Young male drivers will take unnecessary risks at high speeds which is why that demographic is SO f**ked up when it comes to getting insured. I remember paying $380/mo for a 96 Ford Taurus in 2001 because I still was in that "dangerous" age bracket.

Panty Sniffer: This is an insurance company's nightmare. It comes down to "He said. She said." instead of being able to look to a police report for some idea of what happened.

Insurance companies have set rules about how they judge who's to blame.

Generally speaking the person at fault is the one who drove into the other person (except in high speed collisions). Doesn't matter if they suddenly reversed out in front of you or braked suddenly without warning.

They can generally tell from the damage if one car hit the back of the other or if the other car actually reversed or rolled back into the other.

This is an insurance company's nightmare.

Not around here. For minor accidents insurance companies assign blame to one party in a few standard cases (rear-ender, stop sign) and negotiate among themselves in other cases, often agreeing to split the bill 50-50 rather than waste any more time investigating. A $1,000 or $5,000 claim is not a big deal.

If they are facing policy limits liability they care a little bit, but that's an accident police would respond to.

Day_Old_Dutchie

"No-fault" is used in different ways.

My insurance company in insisted Massachusetts did not have "no-fault" insurance for property damage. But the standard collision insurance policy works a lot like no fault in your Canadian link. You recover from your own insurance company.

The difference is, our system is opt-in. Only minor personal injury is mandatory no fault. Anybody who doesn't have full collision insurance can sue. There is also a lesser form of collision insurance that only pays if another identified driver is at fault.

So the insurance agent was sure it was not a no fault system because the insurance company sometimes had to face lawsuits. To drivers with full insurance, it might as well be no fault.

2010-04-30 07:46:57 AM
Q: How do you know asians are moving into the neighborhood?
A: All the mexicans buy insurance.

In all seriousness, as a cop, my main purpose in life is to be a reporting agency. I gather facts, Hopefully in an impartial manner, so other agencies can act on those facts. (Insurance, prosecution, etc) Sounds to me that the department is either over streched and can't afford the man hours, or are forgetting their place.

And yes, women are by FAR worse than men when it comes to accidents. They are also more likely to try to putter away from minor accidents without reporting. (Someone sees it, calls us, we find the driver, usually a woman, who says "oh it wasn't that bad") Women also account for 80% of the downright hazardous traffic violations, like rolling through stopsigns/lights, chatting on cell phones, driving with lights off, passing on the left, etc.

Men are in the lead for off the wall stupid style accidents as well as drunk driving. men also lead the way in personally reckless behaviors, such as speeding and tailgating.

2010-04-30 07:54:07 AM
Several months ago I got rear ended by a guy whose entire commentary on the accident was 'I saw that you stopped for the red light, but I kept moving forward until I hit you anyway.'

He did not want to pay for the damage.

When the insurance company called him (we were both insured by the same company) he told them much the same thing. The insurance company disagreed with him and explained that when you drive your car into the back of someone else's, you have to pay for that.

Even men can be ditzes.

2010-04-30 08:08:40 AM
But officer! It's not a fender bender. It is a bumper thumper this time.

2010-04-30 08:30:04 AM
This in a city where half of the drivers lack insurance. So approx 5000 more drivers will not be caught for driving without insurance.

2010-04-30 08:33:33 AM
So you can put on make up and talk on the phone, etc etc, while driving?

How about almost every time I see a hit and run involving kids at a school walk getting maimed or killed, it's a women driver on her cell phone? I guess they should have been doing their make up and making a sandwich at the same time to avoid killing kids.

2010-04-30 08:36:14 AM
Good. More time to respond the male offenders. You know, those pesky murederers, rapists, carjackers drug dealer, muggers.

For a state with no license plate in front this makes sense.

1. Get a sharp ramming front bumper
2. Move to Philly
3. ?
4. Profit

2010-04-30 08:43:06 AM
So, more and more the police help us less and less. More and more they are offering their "services" less and less.

But guess what? Now they'll have more time to enforce the law and generate more money because they'll be out ticketing people.

If you don't think we are at least on our way to becoming to a police state you aren't paying attention.

They admit they won't be helping as much so they'll have way more free time to screw us.

Craziness.

When a man and a woman are involved in a traffic accident, it's always the man's fault. Always. You know how I know? Because there isn't anywhere in the world where it's legal to drive in the kitchen.

So, back on topic for reals, does this mean that Philly cops are going to stop writing "minor" tickets, too? You know, so they can focus on the important things?

Is the crime rate that freaking high that all cops are chasing down criminals?

A few years back I had a bad year and people just kept crashing into my vehicles (4 times, 2 of them while sitting still at a light).

I'm sorry but I'd rather have a cop make a report than having to find myself in a situation of word against word, AND I'd rather have the cop there to take the idiot's license away when it's easy to see that the person shouldn't be driving at all.

I was glad to have been driving my old (RIP) Dodge Caravan, when the two rear-end happened, my bumper was bent a bit while their car was either totaled or their front was seriously caved in.

Day_Old_Dutchie: Phil Herup: I'll tell you what requires an officer.... making sure the person that hit you has any valid insurance.

I've been hit in Philly a couple of times, and the person was uninsured.

"No-Fault" Insurance solves that particular problem. (new window) You get to deal with your OWN insurance company right off the bat, rather than Mr. Rednecck's lack of insurance.

Not really....

Here is the big problem: IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO DRIVE WITHOUT INSURANCE

also... if you get hit, you should have to pay nothing at all

if you get hurt, who do you collect from?

I don't think you thought your response all the way through

thnksqrd: Wait, cops actually used to respond to calls in Philly?

hahahaha. No.

Cool Story: One of my co-workers did drive the wrong way down a one-way street here while high, possibly backwards - he's not clear on that part and an officer did stop him. The officer was tired though, [he didn't want to fill out paperwork and stuff] so he let my friend off. My friend does not tend to make up stories, and is high a lot, and his non-high girlfriend verified the story so it's probably legit.

They've been doing this in Dallas for years. Not sure what took Philly so long.

Women are terrible drivers, but so are men. Just this week, I saw one guy (he was next to me for about a minute, so I saw him clearly) go through a red light at a busy intersection in rush hour traffic after waiting what I suppose he felt was an unreasonable amount of time. A car turning left had to stop to keep from hitting him. 5 minutes before that, a white Mercedes SUV passed me in the breakdown lane on the highway (ie, I was in the farthest right lane, he/she went into the breakdown lane to pass) going 60+ mph. Not sure about the gender of that driver, he/she blew past me too fast to see, but I suspect a male driver. Men tend to drive assholishly, women tend to drive dumbfarkedly. I don't really prefer one over the other.

Oh very believable. Philly cops are mostly cool and are only interested in real crimes by real criminals. Motor vehicle crap does not interest them. You can speed and blow red lights in Philly all the time.

My fiance had a similar friend who did that in Philly. Drove the wrong way down a one-way road. He got pulled over, the cop left him know hew as going the wrong way, and she was going to let him go with just a warning - until, when he went to turn around, he hit her squad car.

I have another friend who was driving around in Drexel Hill. He came to a red light, locked eyes with a cop who happened to be sitting there at the time, stopped, and then continued to drive. He treated the light like a stop sign, basically. The cop pulled him over, flabbergasted, and said, "You saw me! I saw you look at me! What were you thinking??" and ended up leaving him go with just a warning.

The only accident I've been involved with (that required calling the cops, anyway... I fenderbendered my Dad's '65 Plymouth Belvedere trying to park in front of my house in the ice..) actually happened in Springfield. I was getting off the 476 exit ramp heading into Springfield. Left lane turned left, middle lane turned left and went straight, right lane turned right. I was in the middle lane turning left, stopped at the light. When the light turned green, I started to make my turn, when I was slammed into on my drivers' side. The dumb biatch in the left lane thought it would be BRILLIANT to go straight from over there. Her excuse? "Well I wanted to go straight and I thought you were going straight, too!" She initially told the cop it was my fault, but thankfully, one of the people who saw the accident had pulled over and told him what really happened.

To this day, I still look out for Ruby from Wayne, driving a white 2002 Grand Am.

I think the basic rule is this:

If you're getting passed on the shoulder when you're driving in the far right lane, you're driving too slow. You need to do AT LEAST 65. Kudos for being in the right lane, though.

Likewise, when going on the onramp to merge with the highway, if the driver behind you passes you before you merge, you're not accelerating enough.

In Oklahoma, we have uninsured/under-insured driver insurance. Not horribly expensive (maybe less than $100/6 months), but it only pays out if...the other driver doesn't have insurance or hits their cap. Beautiful thing is, if another driver's insurance pays, your's doesn't go up. :D

DantesDiscoInferno: 'I saw that you stopped for the red light, but I kept moving forward until I hit you anyway.'

Kind of like the idiot that asked me why I stopped at a 3-way intersection...with oncoming traffic and a stop sign against me. The beautiful thing was, he was ticked off because he was going to trade it in *that day*, but didn't have full coverage. So, he paid for the damage to my S-10 (about $5K worth), and his asshattery nets him a call to sell his totalled heap to a junk yard. :D

Sure, because people never drive assholishly just because they can. Your logic is impeccable.

TheMega: Perfect situation when the asshat that is at 100% fault winds up only covering his/her own vehicle and you're stuck with higher insurance (and a deductible) because the police didn't file the report... just one word against another unless a photo can show who did what.

Exactly. An impartial witness to the situation is needed.

This could be a problem with the lack of photographic devices these days.

Doesn't even matter here. I had picture proof of an accident which was the other persons fault just outside of King Of Prussia 2 years ago and the police wouldn't accept it as proof, and so the person insurance company said too bad.

Lawsuit time.

Perhaps what we need is some accident investigators. They wouldn't be full-blown cops, their job would *ONLY* be investigation of lesser accidents although they would have the authority to issue tickets to the drivers in those accidents. No other cop powers, they would be substantially cheaper.

If youre in a fender bender, just call the cops and tell them youve been murdered. Once they show up, just say you got better! Then they'll be more than glad to fill out an accident report, since they'll be so glad that you're ok!

InferiousX: I'll concede that women are probably safer drivers but not better drivers.

Safer drivers are ipso facto better drivers.

What issue is more important than safety?
