Unfortunately, no, the blood test is not 100%. As far as I know, you only need one biopsy, so you may want to get a second opinion. If you have it, the biopsy could save your life, so it is worth it.

That's some hardcore nutjob.

Blaming "new york jews" for this is plain stupid. Of course only one kind of extremist has a real problem here. Every ten years, some abortionist is murderered. Islamofascists kill that many several times an hour.

There are obviously 'good' muslims too, but there's a reason South Park hasn't been censored for anything but Scientology and Islam: those are the two that threatened, one in court, and one with murder.

Muslims should be loud and angry about this, supporting South Park's speech rights. I simply rarely hear that. I know it's out there and I hope the media covers it.

Yeah, there's no way the same peoples that have been waging jihad against unbelievers for centuries, have a ransom on Rushdie's head for blasphemy, butchered an infidel filmmaker, attacked a cartoonist at home with an axe etc could possibly be implicated with a threat against against two more cartoonists that insulted their prophet, that's just crazy thinking.

So you think that this guy is a Jewish plant? Where do you get the "ability to commit crimes without getting arrested or even investigated" bit?

Yes, the guy was born Jewish. I get that. He then either a) converted to Islam, went nuts, and started a radical hate website; or b) is engaging in some complex performance art we don't understand (some of the video I've seen strikes me as skirting the line of satire).

You seem to think it's a Jewish conspiracy. Am I wrong? If it were a Jewish conspiracy, don't you think it defeats the purpose to tell everyone that you're a Jew who converted?

Sorry, mate, just the word on the street at the time. Mrs Dubai was a nursery nurse in a former life, and so still has plenty of friends in the hospitals. "Most popular" is probably overstating it, but there was a reported sharp uptick of baby Osamas. Dubai has a purportedly "free" press, but that's not the kind of thing you'd find in the Gulf News.

One thing Americans just don't understand about Muslims: a poll (reported in the Gulf News, actually) asked Muslims around the world: "what is the most important issue in your life?" In every country, without exception, before anything else, before their country's economy, before their children's education, before health care, before ANYTHING, the most important issue to Muslims is PALESTINE.

They don't hate us for our freedom. They don't really hate us individually. I have good friends who are displaced Palestinians. But they hate the US government for its support of Israel. Period, end of discussion. Now if you'll excuse me, my pomposity tank is almost empty. Time for a refill with sweet, sweet beer.

This seems as good of a time as any, so, besides the whole different prophet thingy, why do people have the Jew hate so much? I mean, I get the land issues, by that I mean I see how some people would want some of the sites that Israel controls. But (yes I know starting a sentence with a but is wrong) why the Jewish hate worldwide? Islamic tradition encourages Muslims to lie to non-Muslims if it advances a Muslim's goals.

Muslims hate the West because our mere existence reminds them that they are 3rd world dwelling barbarians despite our secularism, immodesty and casual sex despite the fact the Koran promises that good Muslims that eliminated all those vices and impurities will be rewarded with ruling over unbelievers.

You spend your entire life listening to preachers quoting the koran's guidance that all you that all you have to do is be a pious Muslim and Islam will dominate the globe and then you see your people are still wiping their ass with their bare hands while Westerners enjoy godlike luxuries such as running water and you'd be outraged and humiliated too.

And being of a 3rd world barbarian mindset stuck in the 8th century the only logical solution they came up with is to kill and explode shiat because wrecking the competition is the only way Muslims could achieve a 'Golden Age' of Islamic superiority over anybody but the Congo these days.

Yes, the Arabs were butchering the Jews long before Israel was created and they hate the US because we won't let them keep slaughtering the Jews, so instead they're going to keep attempting to blow us up until we let them kill Jews again without any interference, and you're an not an anti-Semite as long as you don't personally kill any of the Jews and just let the Arabs do your Jew killing for you.

Would that be, perhaps, a Crusade?

Does Crusade mean Christian conversion? I'm not trying to be a dick, I seriously don't know. I have no background in any church, the only time I've been in church beyond weddings was one day in Sunday school.

Crusade literally refers to a military campaign sanctioned by the Pope to retake The Holy Land. They involved European monarchs who fought, usually in alliance with the Byzantine Empire, to fight the Seljuq Turkish dynasty over control of what is now Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The Byzantine Empire was the remnant of the Roman Empire which had fluctuating control over the Middle East and Greece until the mid-15th Century. Its capital was Constantinopolis (Constantinople, now Istanbul), named after the first Christian Roman Emperor Constantine, and the richest city in Europe through the Middle Ages.

Nowadays it just means a Christian revival campaign.

I think you're wrong, I think it's deeper. I've never been able to understand unadulteraded (yep, I spelt that wrong) hate for someone, but it seems the Muslim and Christian hate is beyond scapegoat, it is a hardcore hate. Like the Jews raped their sister or something (this may be a claim against the Jews, but at that point the Jew thing would not be as important as the crazy thing would be). When I was a kid I used my younger brother as a scapegoat, but I rarely ever wished him dead.

Palestine is the tip of the iceberg. To the Middle East Muslims, Jews are like the Teabaggers' Liberal Socialists, The South's black man, the Nazi's... well you know. Everything is their fault. You read in a paper an article about the collapse of a shiatty building or bridge in the middle of nowhere and the culprit will invariably be Israeli saboteurs. This is fine and encouraged by the governments as it keeps the populace mad at the Jews rather than the assholes that rule them.

Of course, Israel's hardliners that have been in focus lately aren't much better. So vote Islam.

Hatred of Jews is a complex subject, for sure. I think it DOES have its roots in scapegoating, but it started long before the foundation of Israel, and it was almost universal. Personally, I was pretty old before I was even AWARE that there was such a thing as anti-Semitism. I grew up in the liberal hotbed of Birmingham Alabama in the 1960s. Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Jewish, just meant a different building to go to. The only people I remember being looked askance at were the Unitarians, and even that was pretty sedate.

To throw another factoid on the fire: every German friend I have in Dubai has been taken aside by an Arab and told what a great guy Hitler was.

That is the biggest misconception out there, I'm shocked how often it gets repeated. The average Arab Muslim would not believe anything their government tells them by default. The average Arab muslim hates his government with a passion because most Arab governments fell into the US sphere of influence and their leaders aren't heeding the Muslim street's demands to wage yet another suicidal war against Israel. Yes Arabs and Muslims hate Jews with a passion, but not because their government tells uses Jews as a distraction, if anything an Arab government blaming the Jews would have a reverse psychology effect on the Arab streets seething anti-Semitism.

I'm trying to find a link to this poll of the Arab world released a few years ago, the average Arab believes America is 80%+ Jewish, that's why they hate America.

Boobiesontheside: The thing about Islam is that it didn't start out as a normal nice 'do unto others' religion that then later got perverted to control the masses, wage guilt free warfare to take your neighbors land and then rape their women. It was started for just that very reason and NOW it's trying to become more peaceful.

Have you read the Old Testament? According to this religious text, the ancient Israelites massacred towns, enslaved girl virgins, and you can probably guess there was a whole lotta rape. Oh they took other peoples' land too. It's not until Babylon stepped on them that they got all moany and complainy.

"Cool story bro" time!

In 1999 there was an 89% solar eclipse in Dubai. (Totality was in Iran, 100 miles away, so as an American it was inaccessible to me. Bummer)

Anyway...the usual scientists warned people not to look at the sun without protection so they wouldn't blind themselves. This warning got distorted into a general fear that the rays of the sun during the eclipse were inherently dangerous. These poison rays would do some horrible damage if you were outdoors during the eclipse. The Sheikh warned pregnant women to stay indoors with the curtains drawn. Everyone stayed home from work to hide from the poison rays. Dubai was a ghost town. The Sheikh Zayed Road, normally chockablock, was empty.

You can't reason with people that ignorant. I could tell you other stories about ghosts and demons, but my beer is getting warm.

And FWIW, my mother is a Pentecostal fundie nutjob, and there's no reasoning with her either. Evolutionism is nonsense, and the earth is 6000 years old. Also, the Harry Potter books are evil.

Dubai Vol: "Cool story bro" time!

Weird. Those Muslims in your pic are Kashmiri and are jihad-ing against India, which they consider an even bigger satan than the "west". In fact the West does not even come into the picture, Islamic terrorists have killed more Indians than all other nationalities combined.

So...weird. It's almost funny, the juxtaposition of that picture and "anti-West" in the same phrase.

You make a good point. Pakistanis and Indians hate each other on a personal level. As I said, I have good Palestinian friends. But I have worked with mixed crews of Pakistanis and Indians, and the two groups sabotage each other and do everything they can to get the other nationality fired. It's not big or clever, and it's transparently ridiculous to an outside observer, but it's a fact of life. Forget trying to fix it, it's not repairable. The best solution is to fire them all and hire Filipinos, and put a lock on your wallet.

Cool story bro time,

There once was a country that had 3000 of it's citizens killed by terrorists. Their reaction was brutal, extravagant and based on fear and ignorance. They demonized an entire religion and region of the world comprised of people that had no knowledge of, participation in or support for the attacks. This hatred went on for at nine years and counting. During that time they sent more than 11,000 of their own citizens to their deaths in revenge attacks against the wrong people. They invaded and occupied a secular nation that had absolutely nothing to do with the original attacks killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the process. They invaded and occupied another country that had only a loose connection to the attackers even though the vast majority of people had nothing to do with the attackers, spoke a different language from them and none of the attackers were their countrymen.

This country used the fear tactic that the country they were attacking had chemical weapons, yet when they attacked they used white phosphorus, doomed untold generations of children to cancer and birth defects by using depleted uranium, and hired mercenary firms to get rid of their garbage who burnt it thereby poisoning their own troops as well as everyone else.

They used an offer of military protection and a share of the profits to partner with Dubai to set up some of the world's strictest banking secrecy laws going so their contractors and oil companies would have somewhere to launder their ill-gotten gains and stash their wealth without paying taxes in their own country.

Meanwhile the site of the original terrorist attacks is still sitting empty, and the fortune made by the raised oil prices caused by the war have resulted in the world's largest building being built in less time than the war took, in the tax haven, that is also a strict religious monarchy.

This same country passed invasive and unconstitutional laws restricting the rights of it's citizens, violated international treaties and decimated it's reputation worldwide. They nearly bankrupted themselves by going trillions of dollars in debt fighting wars of retaliation against the wrong people.

They have 17 veterans per day that commit suicide, mostly from untreated PTSD and will face unknown deaths, sicknesses and financial ruin for at least an entire generation of it's citizens.

To this day, the country still has a large number of people that discriminate against and harass a religion that comprises over a billion people out of nothing more than anger, fear and bigotry.

When this countries own citizens practice censorship and have agent provocateurs rile people up they are quick to blame, you got it, the same group of people that had nothing to do with it.

You can't reason with people that ignorant. Talking about ghosts, a majority of people in the country in question pray for help from a guy who has been dead for 2000 years against the influence of a demon.

Dubai Vol: elchupacabra: Dubai Vol: The most popular name for boy babies in Dubai hospitals in September 2001? Yep, Osama.

Seriously though, I remember hearing that afterward, along with some of the celebrations... But can that be proven?

I'd think that would be pretty good evidence that this is NOT just some radical subset of Islam.

One thing Americans just don't understand about Muslims: a poll (reported in the Gulf News, actually) asked Muslims around the world: "what is the most important issue in your life?" In every country, without exception, before anything else, before their country's economy, before their children's education, before health care, before ANYTHING, the most important issue to Muslims is Israel and to use PALESTINE to undermine it.

Myths & Facts
Human Rights in Israel and the Territories

MYTH

"Israel discriminates against its Arab citizens."

FACT

Israel is one of the most open societies in the world. Out of a population of 6.7 million, about 1.3 million - 20 percent of the population - are non-Jews (approximately 1.1 million Muslims, 130,000 Christians and 100,000 Druze).1

Arabs in Israel have equal voting rights; in fact, it is one of the few places in the Middle East where Arab women may vote. Arabs currently hold 8 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. Israeli Arabs have also held various government posts, including one who served as Israel's ambassador to Finland and the current deputy mayor of Tel Aviv. Oscar Abu Razaq was appointed Director General of the Ministry of Interior, the first Arab citizen to become chief executive of a key government ministry. Ariel Sharon's original cabinet included the first Arab minister, Salah Tarif, a Druze who served as a minister without portfolio. An Arab is also a Supreme Court justice.

Arabic, like Hebrew, is an official language in Israel. More than 300,000 Arab children attend Israeli schools. At the time of Israel's founding, there was one Arab high school in the country. Today, there are hundreds of Arab schools.2

In 2002, the Israeli Supreme Court also ruled that the government cannot allocate land based on religion or ethnicity, and may not prevent Arab citizens from living wherever they choose.2a

The sole legal distinction between Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel is that the latter are not required to serve in the Israeli army. This is to spare Arab citizens the need to take up arms against their brethren. Nevertheless, Bedouins have served in paratroop units and other Arabs have volunteered for military duty. Compulsory military service is applied to the Druze and Circassian communities at their own request.

Some economic and social gaps between Israeli Jews and Arabs result from the latter not serving in the military. Veterans qualify for many benefits not available to non-veterans. Moreover, the army aids in the socialization process.

On the other hand, Arabs do have an advantage in obtaining some jobs during the years Israelis are in the military. In addition, industries like construction and trucking have come to be dominated by Israeli Arabs.

Although Israeli Arabs have occasionally been involved in terrorist activities, they have generally behaved as loyal citizens. During the 1967, 1973 and 1982 wars, none engaged in any acts of sabotage or disloyalty. Sometimes, in fact, Arabs volunteered to take over civilian functions for reservists. During the outbreak of violence in the territories that began in September 2000, Israeli Arabs for the first time engaged in widespread protests with some violence.

The United States has been independent for almost 230 years and still has not integrated all of its diverse communities. Even today, 60 years after civil rights legislation was adopted, discrimination has not been eradicated. It should not be surprising that Israel has not solved all of its social problems in only 57 years. Continued (new window)

This is what I don't understand. Don't the Jews hold a farking tiny part of the middle east? I mean, damn, the Palestinians can go other places in the area and not have people killing them. I know this is about religion. and the need to hold areas that people deem to be "Sacred". Buttfark, isn't the tiny part of the middle east that Israel holds cool? Maybe I just don't see the whole picture.

Well, the thing is that the Brits took some perfectly good land that belonged to Palestinians for generations and gave it to some people from another country. It doesn't matter how big it is. If all you own is a freakin' trailer in a park, it's your home, and you take pride in it, and you'd defend it. I suggest that you read a rudimentary history of the area, at least from the beginning of the 20th century.

Why are Palestinian Refugees treated differently than all other refugees in the world? (new window)

....."We, the Jewish refugees from Arab lands whose history in those countries goes back more than 2,000 years, long before Islam--suggest that the Arab governments finance the welfare of their own brothers instead of using them as political pawns, while they spend huge amounts for hypocritical propaganda, half truths and outright lies." (January 11, 1976, New York Times.)]

In 1981, the United States Committee for Refugees noted, as it had not done in many previous reports, the "600,000 Jewish refugees resettled from Arab countries ... three decades ago."24 By the next survey, however, that important recognition was singularly negated.25 Had the Jews initially drawn worldwide attention to their Arab-born Jewish refugees in Israel, had they broadcast the persecution of the Jews and other minorities in the Arab countries-and the social and economic burden of absorbing the Jewish refugees from Arab countries-the Arab demand for one-sided repatriation might be perceived today in a different, more evenhanded and objective perspective, and other, critical unknown elements in the conflict might have by now intruded into the consideration of "justice."

As we have seen, all those hapless peoples counted as "refugees" were not in fact refugees: many were needy souls of other nationalities who found sustenance in the camps, and in the process became-and their children became-unwitting human weapons in a holy war that never ends.

The immediate objective of the Arab world's propaganda strategy has been one-sided Arab "repatriation," a "return" in the name of "self-determination" of those Arab refugees who have been perceived as the Palestinian people from time immemorial, with "rights" to "their land." In the foundation for those claims, one cornerstone is the popular perception that the Arabs are the only hapless refugees who were uprooted in 1948.

The Arabs well know how Jews were-and in least one case, still are-treated in Arab countries, [See Chapter 7] however they may have publicly congratulated themselves for "traditionally benign" treatment of "their" Jews. Consequently, they have grounds for concern for the success of one aspect of their program. If the world recognizes that there has been an irreversible exchange of Jewish and Arab refugee populations, this Arab political maneuver, perhaps, might be expected to reach an impasse.

And yet, as illustrated earlier here, some in the world community have recognized the Arab world's cynical and heartless manipulation of those Arab brethren-men, women, and children who found themselves in refugee camps in search of a better life. Why has that recognition failed to bring about a reasonable solution? Why is this refugee problem different from other refugee problems?

Why has UNRWA spent well over a billion humanitarian-contributed dollars-mostly from the United States-to perpetuate the refugee dilemma? More important, why does the Arab world of nearly 200 million people and millions of miles of territory remain so steadfast in its rejection of one minuscule Jewish state that the Arabs have been willing to sacrifice the human rights and often the very lives of their own people? And, given the honorable and predominantly well-intentioned motives of the free world community-oil-benefit seekers aside -how have the Arabs managed to perpetuate this status quo ante?

The answers lie in what is known-and what is not known-about the region.

Having worked to obliterate from the practical dialogue the history of the Jews as "Palestinian people," and having in fact denied Jewish historical ties to their Holy Land (as in, for example, Article 20 of the PLO Covenant), the Arabs have consistently claimed that in the proposed "secular democratic state of Palestine," most of the Jews who are now in their homeland of Israel would have to depart,"26 presumably back to their countries of origin-including the little-known major component of Arab-born Jews.

But a mutual repatriation obviously could not be demanded if one side of an exchange of populations had fled from intolerable conditions and could not return. Hence the need for a revised scenario, the Arab "invitation" to Jews to return, and the alteration from "Arab refugees" to "Palestinians." Armed by myths, prevalent among outsiders, that the "alien" Jews lived harmoniously among the "native" Arabs before Israel became a state, the Arabs have tried, through consistent diplomatic and media repetition of statements by Arab leaders, to convince world opinion that the Jews would be "welcome again" in the Arab states if they were forced out of their homeland in Israel, the "Palestinian homeland" of the "Palestinian people from time immemorial."

Because there are extensive contradictions to important popular perceptions and reports-discernible by reading the sentiments and strategies expressed by Arab writers and by visiting the Arab "confrontation" states-the purported "facts" and the "legitimate rights" that are part of the current rhetoric of the Arab-Israel conflict become recognizable as persistent and troubling questions.

Despite the Arab nations' splintered, disparate reactions to what they consider greater threats than Israel - for some the primary danger is seen as the Soviet Union, for others Muslim Fundamentalism, and for the Gulf states its retention of the power of oil-the Arab world remains adamant and uncharacteristically united in its goal, as Al-Ayubi stated it-to tighten a "noose" around the "Zionist entity."

It is the motive for the unchanging, overarching Arab strategy vis-i-vis Israel, the historical factors behind that motive, and the maneuvers that created a climate where that strategy is advocated as "morally" acceptable, which must now be traced.

People are always arguing about who was there first or who has a better ancient religious claim to a piece of land first. What I think drives the conflict the most from the palestinian point of view is who was displaced most recently.

there's a wonderful documentary that follows a dozen or so pre-teen israeli and palestinian kids and tries to get them to see common ground in each other. For some it was sports, for others it was a simple understanding of humanity.

it thought one of the most telling scenes was one of the palestinian kids who was able to travel with his grandmother to the land they used to have before the creation of israel. there was a collapsing stone house and a barely discernible driveway. The kid talks about his family being taken from their home, put in a walled community, treated like terrorists and for what? So their farm could be abandoned?

This is what sticks with people. A biblical claim to a land is great and all, but when your mother and father can say, "this is where I used to live before it was taken away from us" and point to something tangible, things change.

Instead of admitting that I grabbed a random GIS result for muslim outrage, I'll claim that I created the dissonance on purpose to be 'meta.'

zefal: Dubai Vol: elchupacabra: Dubai Vol: The most popular name for boy babies in Dubai hospitals in September 2001? Yep, Osama.

Seriously though, I remember hearing that afterward, along with some of the celebrations... But can that be proven?

I'd think that would be pretty good evidence that this is NOT just some radical subset of Islam.

Even today, 60 years after civil rights legislation was a ...

Ah Jesus fark. I just went to a panel discussion at my synagogue last night with speeches given by the Consul General of Israel in New York, an American Jewish Committee director, and a hottie from JStreet. I had to leave because you had all these cranky olds in the audience calling all the younger Jews who took a more nuanced approach Nazis. I had to leave before they started throwing gefilte fish and babkas at each other.

I support Israel as a general rule, but I don't need canned Israeli PR vomited onto my computer screen tonight. God rested on the seventh day. What, you're too good to rest?

Kahlua Milkbar: Dubai Vol: "Cool story bro" time!

Talking about ghosts, a majority of people in the country in question pray for help from a guy who has been dead for 2000 years against the influence of a demon.

firefly212: I was with you until I noticed that there are no insurgents in Iraq, just uniformed military, and everyone else is a civi... I'm kinda thinking that we may be a bit misleading in that manner of presentation.

The US has never publicly counted the figures. I lowered some of the estimates to be on the safe side, and for the sake of clarity listed some of the insurgent deaths under military. You may remember that after the invasion the Iraqi generals made an offer to the US to support them which was refused. This is when the insurgency flared, so for quite a bit of the insurgency the US was still fighting the Iraqi military.

Anyway, I threw together a quick graph to illustrate a thrown together fark post.

The civilian casualty figure came from here and here, the number is lower than the first link because that includes insurgents, some of whom I moved to 'military' using the numbers from wiki. I also left off the estimated 500,000 killed by sanctions during the nineties, and the untold numbers killed by cancer and birth defects by depleted uranium. I did include the military and civilians killed in the nineties by the US.

I also used this as a starting point, but it is old and the estimates are extremely low.

Anyway, finding the true casualties figures is next to impossible. I have yet to see any argument that puts the total less than 1.03 million estimated by Opinion Research Business. I think it is going to be ten to twenty years until we get some sense of the true numbers.

The point is that people in this thread and elsewhere whine and moan about how violent Muslims are and how they are killing Americans, while reality would imply that exactly the opposite is true.

Hey thanks for the depressing story! I was feeling too happy and I needed to be sad. So thanks!
But seriously... you have somewhat of a point. However, the occupation of Afghanistan is probably futile. Nothing is going to change for good.
And watching videos like the one of the US helicopter pilots killing innocent journalists in Iraq make me feel that any occupation of any country is wrong.
Anyway, seeing that poor girl temporarily puts my own troubles in perspective.
