Nicely done, subby. +1

However, this isn't the first. There was an American woman who had one after having her face shot off by a shotgun, though I'm not sure if it counted as "full", and this dude^ from France. His doctor called it "the first full face transplant"... But who knows, maybe the Spanish one is, um, more full(?)

Wait, wasn't the American or French team the first to do that....years ago?

Yeah, I thought this happened in France a few years ago? Can't be bothered to look it up at the moment though.

The world's first face transplant was carried out on a French woman, Isabelle Dinoire, in 2005.

In 2008 an American woman, Connie Culp, received what was at that point the most extensive face transplant ever performed.

If you accidentally shoot your face off I think you deserve to have difficulty with your face after that.

After reading the article and seeing the illustration of what part of the face was missing, I was reminded of the picture I saw on stile project years ago of the guy sitting in the hospital, looking right into the camera, with most of the front of his face all exploded and bloody.

I started a GIS to link to a pic (I planned on including a description of just what it was you would be clicking on and a warning about it not being safe for eyeballs), but I didn't get far before I saw enough stuff to give me that horrible feeling. You know the one. So I stopped.

Some of you know what I'm talking about. Compare the damage to that guy's face to the illustration in the article. Whaddya think? Might be the guy, huh?

I do know the feeling, used to visit stile a few years ago on a regular basis. (Most of the time if you viewed by rank, the hot / quirky chicks were on top. At odd hours, people would vote up the bad ones, odd phenomenon, I think a lot of non US people(or the F'd up US people) got on late at night.) Certain wars make sense if it was overseas people voting up the bad pics.

Anyhow, I do see the resemblence, but I'm certainly not searching for the pic.

I thought the first full face transplant was a year or so ago...? Again, I'm not looking it up, but this time it's only laziness.

Guessing it's the infamous motorcycle.jpg from Rotten. Iirc, there wasn't a lot of info on the guy, but I think he might've been American. (At one point Rotten had a whole writeup on how they got the photo, but I'm too tired go find it.)

Yeah, that's the one. I remember seeing that on stile about 10 years ago, and had forgotten about it until now. The illustration in the article shows damage basically identical to the damage that guy sustained.

Did a face-grind for over fifty feet, after landing on the pavement at over a hundred miles per hour with the impact tearing off his lower jaw, nasal bone and all the tendons in the lower part of his face. Yes - ALL of them.

He survived - but it took over 100 operations over five years. He speaks at motorcycle rallies about safety equipment. I can't find a picture of him as he looks now, but...

Actually it's a lot more than a face transplant, it's a face, jaw, palate, nose and some other stuff transplant. If the docs succeeded and it turns out well, this will be rather major news. Might lead to better prospects for people who lose their jaws or other parts of their underlying facial structures due to cancer, infection or what have you.

Guh... I've seen that picture so many times but it never fails to bother me. If you can stand to look into the gore, you can see his tongue in the middle of it all, and to the side of that you can see what's left of his jaw, with some teeth still in there.

So. Gross.

Imagine knowing the person who donated the face and then seeing this guy.

creepy.

FTA: the man, a farmer in his thirties, had been unable to swallow, speak or breathe properly after accidentially shooting himself in the face in 2005.

Hang on, this guy deserves a new face? I mean, if you can't look after the one you've got you don't get a replacement. That's what my mum always told me, anyway...

the description with the tongue and what not reminds me of some American kid that attempted suicide with a shotgun but just blew his face off. I don't much feel like GISing it

/also reminds me of every Metalocalypse episode

That picture always horrifies me on a number of levels. But the most disturbing level is that what's left of the guy's face looks just like my brother. Especially the eyes. Luckily, my brother doesn't ride motorcycles.

And as others pointed out: the tongue. Ugh, can you imagine the taste of that?
