Well, the kid turned out to be a good-for-nothing little punk thug. But lots of kids do.

I'm not seeing an obvious connection between his current crime and the earlier basketball affair. Looks (for now) like a coincidence, nothing more.

It wouldn't surprise me if he or his attorney used it as an excuse, though, just because. Kids that age aren't very much into accepting personal responsibility anyway.

Basketball leads to crime. It's obvious.

I had a "you made me a criminal" type coach. A complete cawk, ignored my 3 point and free throw prowess, would put me in the waning minutes of blowouts (and being blown out) and shaite himself as I ran up the score.

Thankfully I limited my reaction to going on a five-state laugh at his bowl-cut spree.

In his defense, living well really is the best revenge. It's followed very closely by selling drugs to his children though.

If you're gonna lead a high speed chase and then run of foot. You should OBVIOUSLY grab the gun and crack before you get out there car. At least then you have a chance to ditch it before you get caught.

Oddly, you'd think that treating a kid with respect would cause him to have self-respect, and that treating him with confidence would result in self-confidence. You'd think in both cases he'd admire and have fond thoughts of those who treated him well, and aspire to their examples. Or else you can treat him like crap and have a thug result.

I'm not terribly familiar with The Wire, but I do recall watching an episode where a kid about the same age was a little crook. His teacher locked himself out of his car, so the kid whipped out his equipment and broke in for him.

This kid looks a lot like him, only with less hair.

Gig With White House Folks, Then Jail Time
April 21, 2010 - 3:09 PM | by: Mike Levine

Three weeks after he and dozens of others, including top-ranking Obama administration officials, spoke in the nation's capital about building a brighter future for Americans, 20-year-old Demarco Scott robbed an electronics store at gunpoint, according to local police and officials.

Scott, a Washington, D.C., resident, expressed regret to his victims as he robbed them, documents filed by police in federal court said.

The month before, he had been a "student presenter" during a conference aimed at tackling issues such as job creation and economic stability, transportation and infrastructure, and housing stabilization in cities and towns across the country.

Scott was asked to describe his experience with a new city-sponsored internship program, which places "underserved young adults" into five-month apprenticeships across Washington, and teaches them resume-writing and job-interviewing skills.

"It's a pretty good program," Scott said in a halting voice, at first sounding unsure of himself as he addressed a session of the National League of Cities' 2010 Congressional City Conference. "We have a lot of young adults in the program, and it's like the program is there to help to try to get people a career ... to better their future."

The conference, held over three days in the middle of March, featured mayors from across the country and several Obama administration officials, including White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.

Around that same time, Scott was allegedly participating in a gun-wielding robbery spree across the nation's capital.

OUR bad! We're sorry!

While what the coach did probably didn't help the kid out, I'm pretty sure the kid was headed towards a life of crime anyway. It is like the Marshmallow experiment with kids and how they react to the test influencing how they do later in life

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deferred_gratification

Philo would have failed the marshmallow test big time.
