There he is! No... wait... it's a rock. There he is! Nope.. nope... another rock. Oh wait... no, just a rock...

I bet that gets a little tiring after 40 minutes.

Interesting. The cutting is a bit slow. Calling Gollum by his name is done for the first time by Frodo after capturing him, so this goes a bit wide of the established story there. Nazgul roaming as riders in black might work, but that is mostly later also. This short piece also lacks the neutral elements and foibles of the side of good, which reduces the depth of the characters and story. This is visually and dramatically intense, but the scripting, editing, and story balance all could use some work.

Ok, what the hell is the budget on this thing? I just watched the trailer and it looks remarkably not horrific, productive-values wise.

I am about half way through. Worth a watch if you are a fan, only 40 minutes.

I could SWEAR I saw this at least a year ago.

And yeah, looking at the website, it came out in June of '09.

But yes, it was well done for a fan film.

Old news is old. This has been out for a while.

That said, the production values are pretty awesome.

The article said it had a $5k budget. Anyone watch it yet? I never liked LotR very much but I'm not against watching it if a not-fanboy says it's worth checking out.

How was this done on $5000?

Free helicopters?

Free cranes?

Free digital FX?

Free score?

Free grip equipment?

Free wardrobe?

They did this for $5000? Imagine what these guys could have done with Jackson budget.

I actually like these Orcs better than Jackson's.

Worth 40 minutes if you like LOTR or cinema on the cheap.

Impressive. I understand MGM is going through some major money problems, maybe they could give these guys a a mil or two (tiny budget compared to typical major films) and see what they come up with.

The production value is incredible, for a movie made by fans it's awesome.

These factors aside, it sucks.

There I said it.

m0llusk: Calling Gollum by his name is done for the first time by Frodo after capturing him

I may be wrong, but I think Bilbo called him Gollum because of his throat weirdness until after Gandalf determined that Bilbo wasn't being fully truthful. He was Gollum until Gandalf 'questioned' him. Never knew he was Smeagal until his torture and water-boarding by Gandalf, when he got the whole story. He was a captive of the wood elves until he escaped during an orc attack, which may or may not have been planned.

Wait a minute. Are you serious? People actually LIKE Lord of the Rings? I just assumed it was an internet gag where people pretended to like it, like they were in on the joke. Oh well, whatever makes you happy.

Nope. Terragen. Cheap and powerful. Yes, all those sweeping shots of beautiful countryside was 3D animation made by amateurs using software that cost less than $500.

Actually, this is not correct. In the book, Gollum had been captured by the orcs and taken to Mordor where he was tortured until he gave up the location of the ring... The Shire... He was released by Sauron and later captured by Aragorn. Aragorn had captured Golum, before Frodo had been give the ring by Bilbo. Aragorn left him imprisoned with the wood elves of Mirkwood and left for Bree where the fellowship began. Gollum then escaped... The Movie left this out... Thank you, I will go back to my basement now.
