Discussion of a change to non-logged in users, and Fark's favorite headlines of the week for 4/11 - 4/17

Hey there, we have a change coming and we wanted you to have a heads up about it, even though most of you will never notice it.

For the last few years, advertisers have been been begging us to use interstitials on Fark. We've always told them no, because 1) it's annoying as hell, and 2) it's annoying as hell. They've kept asking and we've turned them down every time, but they still come back the next month and ask again. It's not that we don't need the money, which helps keep the site running and helps us with various staffing needs, but that we couldn't think of a way to make it work that wouldn't suck for you. We've never wanted it to mess up your user experience, but we also don't like seeing that money flowing to other sites when we're doing our best to stay afloat.

Even though it's been shot down every other time it's been discussed, there may be a middle ground where we can do something that doesn't affect 99% of you. Here's what we're implementing: we've made an arrangement to allow interstitials for non-logged-in users at a rate of one per day. If you're logged in, you won't see it. A person that's not logged in would see it once in a 24-hour period. The advertisers would like to see more than that, but this is all we're willing to allow. While most of you will never notice this change, we figured a heads-up was still in order.

If you're logged in and you're seeing an interstitial ad, it's likely not related to this (in the past it's been remnant ads that we never approved), so please let us know immediately so we can go smack the advertiser. We're hoping that this can work where it's under your radar but still helps us out.

Thanks, Drew!

After browsing a lot of the other sites that are mind-numbingly ad-heavy, it's nice to see an admin that gives a rat's ass about the opinion of their users.

This liter appreciates it.

I, for one, welcome our new Advertisement overlords.

/wtf is an interstitial? Is that a fancy term for "pop-up" or "pop-over?"

Whoo!!! First Headline 'O The Week! Does it still count if it's from the Business tab?

I'm already over it. So there.

It's a sort of intermediary page where ads are displayed. Wikia has started doing it and it annoys the hell out of me.

2010-04-19 04:44:11 PM
I laughed at the Michael J Fox one.

/going to hell
//but not as quickly as the bastard that thought up interstitial ads

I'm OK with this.

Leave 'em in stitials!

Meh, I almost never log in before browsing, and if it's at the rate you say, it would barely bother me.

Good middle ground I say

sub_harmonic: wtf is an interstitial? Is that a fancy term for "pop-up" or "pop-over?"

My understanding is that it's similar to a pop-up, but full-screen before you get to your target page.

2010-04-19 04:45:03 PM
Bleh, this would be annoying. I check Fark on random computers now and again when I'm bored. I come in, check out one or two articles, and head out again. I don't bother logging in and I use different computers.

Also I don't usually log in unless I've got something to say, which, I usually don't.

This would BUG THE shiat out of me.

Then again I'm not paying for TF (mostly because I don't have the money or the time) so I shouldn't complain at all.

sub_harmonic: /wtf is an interstitial? Is that a fancy term for "pop-up" or "pop-over?"

I think it's an ad that's an "interuption". I.e., you hit a link, and instead of going to what the link links to, you get an ad page with a "continue to requested link" link.

Annoying as hell.

It's like those ad's at gamespot or IGN. The ones where you click on an article, but instead of the article an ad comes up that says 'click here to continue to article'. Just below popups and popunders for annoyance.

Know how on some pages you click on a link and it shows a full page ad with a "Click here to continue" at the top? That's an interstitial.

I get them on IGN once in a while.

That doesn't sound so bad...

jayhawk88: Whoo!!! First Headline 'O The Week! Does it still count if it's from the Business tab?

That depends on the marginal cost of the Sports tab.

You mean those pages where it says "Your page will load in ten seconds, but first WORMS IN MY VAGINA?! IT'S MORE LIKELY THAN YOU THINK"? I hate those.

I hate advertising/marketing in general. I trust more politicians than I do marketing personnel.

Interstitials will still effect you. Instead you just get a blank screen with a link of where you really wanted to go somewhere.

2010-04-19 04:47:36 PM
As others have said an interstitial is a temporary page - similar to a pop-up. You go www.fark.com you see full page ad for snorg t's and it says if you dont click continue the page will automatically redirect in 30 seconds.

/drew do you charge for frequency capping like that
//because you should...i tell my publishers to charge for it

2010-04-19 04:47:38 PM
from wikipedia: "Sparingly and prudently used, interstitial pages can avoid confusion and aid usability.[citation needed]"

2010-04-19 04:47:48 PM
IN BEFORE "YOU'LL GET OVE..."

Mystwalk: youll get over it

Aww, bugger.

2010-04-19 04:47:57 PM
Add whatever you want -- AdBlock will make sure I never notice it.

For the record, yeah, those of us who are intelligent enough to set our cache to empty after the browser closes would see it more than once per day. See above for how much I care, though.

2010-04-19 04:48:03 PM
It's normally a page entirely devoted to an ad that you get directed to on your way to a different page. Something like a white page with a picture of a sneaker and the Nike logo. Usually, somewhere on the page, there is some linked text that says "to skip this ad click here" or "click here to go directly to blah blah.com"

What I think is interesting is that the advertisers haven't bothered to come up with a better way of promoting their product after being told several times that X method is annoying and people hate it.

You still get them with adblock, it just loads a blank page but you still have to click through it.

2010-04-19 04:48:51 PM
interstitial ads are okay with me, especially at one per day. That is, as long as you keep the always-in-motion flash ads off the page, which goes double for the ones that don't just move over the page, they move the ENTIRE page so the content keeps moving in and out of my frame.

Please.

Yes, those pages. They should be consumed in holy fire.

Wish advertisers would pull their heads out of their collective asses and realize that they're a large part to blame in the adoption of anti-ad measures.

Okay, so if those are interstitials, what's the word for those ads that popup when you hover over certain keywords on some pages? Those annoy the fark out of me, doubly so because it's usually some Bing advertisement.

debug: What I think is interesting is that the advertisers haven't bothered to come up with a better way of promoting their product after being told several times that X method is annoying and people hate it.

One thing I'm seeing more now is trailing ads on videos, which I think is much better than making me sit through a commercial before the video I wanted to watch. Memo to sites that allow that: I click off before I ever get to your content.
