(Chicago Sun-Times)   Tea Party Rallies? If staging public gripe fests gives these people something to do, then great. It's outside. It involves handicrafts, the making of signs and costumes. It's like Scouting for irked middle-aged white people   (suntimes.com) divider line 611

The 'baggers have probably gotten more exercise in the last year than the entirety of their sad, disappointing lives. Change you can believe in.

At least if they are caught in a rainstorm outside they will not, like turkeys, look up with their mouths hanging open and drown.

At least I don't think they will.

"It's like scouting..."

I rofl'd. What I find hilarious is that these are the same people who got all snarky about lefties protesting the war and other Bush era policies.

How's that first amendment workin' out for ya? Good stuff, ain't it. Have a *ball* with your bootstrappy selfs.

If it were a crowd of black people protesting higher taxes or redistribution of wealth or what have you, the Teabaggers would be the first to say "If they've got time enough to stand around protesting, they've got time enough to find a second job."

2010-04-17 12:46:56 PM
Sounds fun! I'll bring the kool aid!

2010-04-17 12:59:07 PM
I think it is less like scouting and more like Renaissance Faire weekends. Take that any way you like.

Exactly.

You have to be careful about what time you schedule a rally. Skipping nap time makes them cranky all day and fussy at dinner. Which leads to cleaning applesauce off the wall and an early bedtime for Mr. I-Don't-Wanna-Eat-My-Vegetables-Carrots-Are-Socialist.

I'm glad this went green. That was a really good writeup. Agreed wholeheartedly.

take this any way you want, but I was at one and the majority of men looked liked sex offenders.

What they don't seem to realize is that should they be successful in their goal of installing anyone other than the evil dems, there will be no substantive change in policy and they're going to get the same appreciative treatment that Ibn Saud gave to the Ikhwan.

It's like scouting if the scouts were angry and demonizing the peace corps and trying to undermine their funding so they would have more for themselves.

The radio played a sound bite of Sarah Palin at the Boston event. She sounds like a screechy cheerleader who doesn't really belong. I can't imagine her as vice president.

The state's new Republican senator, Scott Brown, did not attend. That was probably a smart decision.

I absolutely hate the Tea Party, but damn, that is one enormous, passive aggressive attack on them. It even gently goes to Godwin levels near the end.

2010-04-17 04:36:51 PM
I've been stuck inside listening to boring powerpoints all day when I would rather be out riding my motorcycle.

This headline just made my day suck less.

Thank you.

I kid, but it's a good thing they're expressing their anger rather than letting it fester. Pent-up anger like that has a way of coming out in more...creative ways.

Diogenes: A whole lot of them are miles away from getting their sign-making badges.

For amusement we wandered over there after eating lunch. We saw a sign that said "CAN YOU HERE US? STOP RAISING TAXS!!!" Tried to take a picture with the phone but it didn't come out well.

The weirdest ones to me were the ones that said "OBAMA'S WAR" in reference to Iraq/Afghanistan. Seriously? Tea Partiers are blaming Iraq those on Obama now? I mean, I know they're rather divorced from reality, but that really takes the cake.

I take it as the sound of a racist, sexist, bigot. It comes from the same type of political prejudicial thought that would have complained that the majority of men at a NAACP civil rights rally from decades back looked like criminals. Congratulations on being the 21st-century heir to the Ku Klux Klan mentality.

Well, Afghanistan is his to win or lose now. There's not really another option as pretending that withdrawal will make Afghanistan/Pakistan go away is silliness.

Neil Steinberg sounds just like a spokesman for the socialist liberals in Washington. They fear the Tea Party movement and so they must try to talk bad about it. It's just typical, tired political maneuvering on the part of the Democrats. Demagogue the opponents motives but never get into a rational discussion with them. The press, incidentally, has doing most of the heavy lifting for them since the election. Same old "stuff"!(yawn)

2010-04-17 04:42:21 PM
Alien Robot, I think you are unfairly profiling sex offenders based on a preconception of what they look like. Maybe most sex offenders just look like Teabaggers rather than the other way around.

I've long thought of Tea Party people as political larpers, so I'm getting a kick out of etc etc. I just wish they'd hurry up and combine their game with the vampire stuff. I think the protest signs would look better, and it'd keep them out of direct sunlight. Or possibly make them sparkle. Either way, an improvement.

They are boomers who (rightly) suspect they won't get a comfortable retirement.

The problem is, if you look at the human condition in the grand sweep of history, it's hard to feel sorry for them.

bukketmaster: Political affilation be damned. Anybody who's going to great lengths to keep taxes low is okay in my book.

I'll give you a hint: it has NOTHING to do with taxes. They existed before Obama was president, and they will exist after Obama is president. This is about racism masquerading as politics.

I love the hate and misconstruing of the tea-party people. My mom is a successful mental-health professional, and takes personal time off to attend a handful of rallies because she's upset at the reckless spending of the government. People she meets there are doctors, businessmen, retirees, mothers, and other such people.

Neil Steinberg acts like an elitist, walking through the rally looking down on the protesters instead of acknowledging them. He repeats incorrect rumors, like claiming past rallies were "excessive". Really? Ask D.C. police, who love the tea-party rallies because they are pretty much peaceful and clean.

But it's much easier to straw-man the movement, hurl insults like "tea-baggers", and dismiss them as red-necks, rather than acknowledge that they're reasonable people with reasonable arguments.

Yea, that's unfortunate. Afganistan should have been handled correctly from the beginning. But Teabag Bush got all busy with Iraq and lost focus.
Where are those dang WMD's.??

Rumsfeld.

That none of them uttered so much as a peep of complaint while Bush was growing government spending, increasing deficits and the ballooning the overall size of the federal government fundamentally undermines their contentions that this is what they're angry about rather than who it is (Obama) continuing Bush's policies.

Hence, such silence then requires that their complaints now be wholly dismissed out of hand without so much as thought.

Sorry folks, you blew it.

Further, how could anyone take them seriously when they're now aligning themselves with the same republican politicians who were - to a man - staunch supporters of the previous president who initiated this economic collapse?
