Will Captain America end up doing battle with Dr. Horrible?

Good. Comic book movies need humor and Whedon will add that.

I heard the big finale with Captain America singing "I've got the Red, White & Blues" is a real tear jerker.

Captain America to be played by Sarah Michelle Geller.

Oh good, I got here in time for the FARK Joss hate-a-thon!

Give the guy a chance, don't condemn the film yet. Joss is well known for being the go-to guy to doctor movie scripts. I'd be willing to bet he's had his hand in films that you have really enjoyed and you never knew about it.

When he is given the latitude to be creative he's done some really great work. His sci-fi (no, not just Firefly), along with BSG has helped to define what good sci-fi really is about. As much as I enjoyed Star Trek, it's a hollow show. What can you say about most of the characters that isn't either their appearance or their job?

The thing I like about Joss's work is his focus on the characters rather than gimmickry. Outside of BSG, how many sci-fi shows have well developed dynamic characters?

Ok, I'll STFU now and let you get back to the hate, because that's what all the cool kids are doing.

In just after the hate party starts to say:
If you dislike Whedon or anything he's done, your opinion is incorrect.
Thank you.

Captain America should be the easiest film to write of all the Avengers characters. I don't understand why the film has to be renamed for foreign markets.

Other than the Hollywood-created idea that the U.S. won WWII alone, there's nothing wrong with saying Americans are the good guys

From what I read, that line was supposed to be the culmination of a running gag through the film. The director dropped the whole rest of the gag, but kept the one line.

2010-04-15 04:56:40 PM

Look, Joss is okay and knows comic books.

I was even hopefull about The Avengers. But the strength of these films is that they're all different.

Having Joss polish Cap. America (which honestly I was digging what I have heard so far) takes away from that.

I need to have WWII, I need the Invaders, I even need to see Bucky. All of this is essential to setting up Cap. If any of that goes away thanks to Joss he better start wearin' a cup around LA because...

COCKPUNCH!

Bucky is now a 14 year old girl?

Honestly, I don't think a Cap movie is the right place for pop culture references. Can Colbert team up with John Milius to rewrite it after that?

My ideal concept for a Cap movie is basically Henry V meets WW2, with head-mounted wings.

My inclination is always to blame the director (or editor) before the actors. If they didn't think it was good enough, they shouldn't have used it. Berry is certainly competent enough to read a given line in a more than one way.

He'd be much better served working on the Spider-Man script. Throw in Felicia and he can meet his girl power quota.

Although we might end up with Gwen Stacy breaking Peter's neck.

Blind_Io: The thing I like about Joss's work is his focus on the characters rather than gimmickry.

Rather than gimmickry? Seriously? You think he's not stuck on gimmicks? Even in his characters? His characters display the biggest gimmick he's got: dialogue (maybe second biggest: waiflike girl kicks ass). Never mind the gimmicky situations he puts them in.

(And I'm not buying even for a minute his characters or their arcs are written any better than any average TV show, never mind some of the better ones of the past 15 years.)

KingPsyz: Look, Joss is okay and knows comic books.

BFD (not directed at you, I agree with you mostly), but just because someone 'knows' comic books doesn't make them the right fit for a comic book movie.

Was Richard Donner a comic fan? Was Christopher Nolan?

Contrast: Kevin Smith. Someone who should probably never direct a comic book movie until he learns how to direct action sequences. And yet he 'knows' comic books.

I don't want a guy who 'knows' comic books. I want a guy who can direct a movie, and part of that is doing the research. A good director can and will research.

/Sorry, I just hate the 'one of us' mentality.

ODDwhun: Joss Whedon? The guy who wrote Toy Story? Has he done anything else?

I realize that you're trolling, but hey. Here's a few that people don't often know about (aside from the Toy Story one you referenced.

First two or so seasons of Rosanne. You know, when it was good and before the Crazy One got creative control.

Atlantis: the Lost Empire. A really unappreciated Disney flick.

Titan A.E. Another really under appreciated sci-fi movie.

He's doing or has done an episode of "Glee," if you're into that kind of thing. I'm not, but hey.

Directed two episodes of The Office in 2007.

There's more that I have heard of, but as they are not readily available on IMDB I can't list them because I can't remember them.

Characters are not gimmickry. I'm talking about that crap Star Trek pulls when they just insert a bunch of techno babble and then everything is all better - the whole time a bunch of stuffed shirts with no substance try to look busy. There was only one time in Firefly when the ship itself was the problem ("Out of Gas") and that was only a breakdown to further the story, it wasn't the point of the story.

I think that you need to watch more "average" television.
