Kinda sucks having your last words be:

Hey, I've got an idea! Why don't we see what the investigation reveals before blaming the dead.

Your explanation is quite possible (and quite reasonable) -- here's another explanation:

Commentator and leader of Poland who voices anti-Russian sentiment "accidentally" dies in plane crash over Russia. Russia puts blame on president of Poland.

Normally this would be a conspiracy theory, except that Russia has a bad habit of assassinating critics.

Yeah, but the thing is he did it before. He fired a pilot who refused to land because of conditions and diverted. The pilot was later reinstated (maybe that looked a bit bad).

There's allready a sound recording out showing the Polish pilote attemting to communicate in Russian with the tower, but not understanding the number system, specifically for altitude (!).

And the Russian tower kept telling them to divert, even after three failed attempts to land.

You know, sometimes people die without it being the Russians fault.

My point is simply to wait for the results of the investigation before jumping to conclusions.

On the other hand, if the current Russian government says that it was raining, it's worth checking to see if rain has ever existed anywhere.

Same with Ailyha (not bothering to look up the spelling). She insisted they carry her excessice luggage on a small private jet against the wishes of the pilot. The shame is that the pilot died along with her.

It's not the "wishes" of the pilot. If a pilot agrees to do something with marginal safety, then it's the pilot's responsibility.

Yes, there are other pressures put on pilots but pilots need to put their lives first. They're the ones in charge and they're the ones who have the last word.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. (Hanlon's or Heinlein's Razor)

Mightybaldking's Occam/Hanlon Hybrid Razor:

"Of two equivalent theories or explanations, all other things being equal, one that posits stupidity or carelessness is to be preferred over one that posits evil."

StreetlightInTheGhetto: Is it bad that that's exactly where my mind first went?

Eliminating a journalist or ex-spy is one thing. Killing a foreign head of state and nearly a hundred top officials while they are visiting your country is something different altogether. I don't think Stalin would have the balls to pull something like that off, let alone Putin.

Eh, all that said, this is actually improving relations somewhat. Granted, that they were heading towards Katyn when the plane went down is already a sign of that, but still.

It's in the Russian's interest to have the investigation as transparent as possible. If the paranoid nationalists that inhabit Kaczynski's party think that the Russians are hiding something and conspiracy theories take root, it will set back relations a long way.

This wasn't like having Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, and the entire cabinet on the same plane. This was like having Biden, three random House members, three random undersecretaries of something, and a couple three-star generals on the same plane. The article even mentions this:

Polish markets have remained stable following the crash, with stocks and the zloty currency little changed Tuesday after inching higher Monday.

The muted reaction reflects in part the fact that policy in Poland is driven primarily by the government and not the president, whose powers are limited to vetoing laws and representing the country on the international stage.

Oh, I know Putin isn't that stupid... just a knee-jerk thought and all. Besides, diplomats from a EU country are a bit different than human rights activists or journalists in Chechnya.

Besides, plane crashes don't have that level of sophisticated accuracy gunfire in an elevator or polonium in sushi has.

The KGB/FSB likes poison and car accidents for assassinations IIRC :P

It is totally in Russias best interest to do a thurough and "transparent" investigation along side the Polish in order to ensure good relations and also and more importantly I think, show Russia and Putin/Medvedev in a humanitarian light. They are opening there arms to the Polish people over this as it were, suspended visa requirements for next of kin, hotel accomidations, translation, transportation and counselling services for the victims families, all convienently provided in Moscow, and I'm sure many prominent Russian government officals just happen to be standing around when cameras go off.

Yeah, I'm sure that cynical thought has crossed everyone's mind, mine included. But there is a slight danger that the forces of mutual suspicion could take over in both countries and turn what could be a chance at rapprochement (tragic as it is) into another nasty round of recrimination.

To put into perspective the severity of this tragedy, this would be the equivalent of us losing:

The President
The First Lady
The Vice-President
The former President and Vice-President
The Secretary of State
The White House Chief of Staff
The Secretary of Defense
The Army Chief of Staff
The Chairman of the Federal Reserve
The Secretary of Veterans' Affairs
The Head of the National Security Agency
The Pentagon Chaplain
3 U.S. Senators
The spouses of all of these people, and a lot more.

Why in the hell would they put all of these important officials together in one plane???
