Seth'n'Spectrum: The entire field of foreign policy analysis is one big exercise in extending false equivalencies. Poland = Georgia and therefore herp derp durr is not really all that surprising.

Russia invaded Georgia over a gas pipeline. Polish President Dead Guy announced a gas pipeline yesterday.

You have to look at the facts.

They were flying in a plane. Who makes planes? The Russians, and Americans.

Who flys in planes? Flyers, which rhymes with liars.

Who is known for lying?

Putin.

Who has mismatched shoe laces? The President of Poland.

It's clear that Putin did it, and I didn't even have to leave my desk, and solved it within an hour.

Where's my Tab?

From the BBC link above:

'Biggest tragedy'

Members of the Polish community in the UK have been e-mailing the BBC since the news broke.

Marcin, from London, said: "I was shocked when I discovered what happened in Smolensk this morning.

"It is the biggest tragedy in the history of Poland, because so many very important people have died at the same time."

I appreciate that this is bad (let's face it - whoever decided to let that much of the upper echelon of a nation's government on the same flight will likely at the least have to rethink their risk management strategies) but "It is the biggest tragedy in the history of Poland"?!?!?!

I can think of a couple of other things that happened in Poland, some as recently as the 1980s...

The Thnikkaman: NEDM: The Thnikkaman: How did WWI start again?

Osama bin Laden flew an airplane into the World Trade Center.

The kind of plane that was available in 1914 would probably just crumple on and bounce off the side of a skyscraper.

You sound like an old-timey Truther.

I think he's probably right. A biplane doesn't have a ton of mass or fuel to cause damage. In 1945 a B-25 (a much larger aircraft) struck the Empire State Building and only killed 14 people.

/Hmm. It was foggy then too.

There's a presidential election coming up this year anyway; it'll simply be brought forward a couple of months.

Actually, Komorowski (Marshal of the Sejm and currently acting president) is one of the candidates. Three others were killed in the crash. He's going to be in charge until the election. Whadya reckon are the chances of anyone else getting elected? Conspiracy?!!1

MilkIt, why do you have such a visceral hatred toward Russians? And not just the government, mind, but it looks like you hate all Russians in general. The Germans once killed nearly 30 million Russians, yet Russians have a positive view of Germans now. Blind, uncompromising hatred only begets more blind hatred from the other side, and thus the cycle continues on and on...

And you're not qualified to judge who's responsible here and who isn't for this tragedy, because your emotions blind you. You're a fundamentalist who already "knows" the answer.

2010-04-10 08:16:59 AM

NicoFinn: rynthetyn: The BreakingNews twitter feed is reporting that the former president and the head of the Polish army were also on board, as well as possibly the head of Poland's central bank.

That's an awful big chunk of government to get taken out in one instant.

Wouldn't they think of this ahead of time and just not all travel together on the same plane? I know it's slightly paranoid, but you have to think of these things.

That's what I asked my dad. Apparently they needed to save money so they all took the same plane to the anniversary ceremony.

Nice work Milkit, immediately spouting hate and conspiracy theories. Haven't you gone out on the street lynching some Russians yet? Calm down a little bit and shut up with the crazy theories and hate until some more news comes in.

Apparantly the pilot was advised to divert to Minsk because of heavy fog in Smolensk, but they decided to go against it and land in Smolensk anyway in the fog. So human error seems the most likely rather than some Russian conspiracy. (Besides the Russians would have nothing to gain from doing this)

Esn: (snip) The Germans once killed nearly 30 million Russians, yet Russians have a positive view of Germans now. (snip)

In all fairness, I have known Russians, Germans and Poles quite well over the course of my life. As best I can tell:

- the Germans still hate everyone who isn't German; they're just way better at concealing it until that ninth beer.
- the Russians generally love their Allies in WW2, even now. Just not so fond of people like, oh, the Germans. Seriously, international dimplomacy has nothing at all to do with what a people generally think and feel. The Germans to the Russians are about as popular as a truckload of dead rats at a tampon factory (*)
- The Poles are very confused and you should not marry their women.

(*: I am trying to help the popularity of the movie Top Secret by stealing a joke from it. It is a very, very funny movie.)

Actually, it might not have been the pilot's fault. On a previous flight to Georgia, the pilot had been advised to divert to a different airport. He proceeded to do so, when Kaczynski ordered him to land anyway. The pilot refused, Kaczynski got pissed off and threatened to punish him on return to Poland. Now, from what I've heard, the pilot of the Smolensk flight was relatively young, and probably unlikely to have the balls to tell the president to fark off.

If this was the case, and they attempted to land against all advice because of the president's order, I seriously hope there is an afterlife long enough for all the other passengers to beat Kaczynski to a pulp for getting them killed. Just sayin'.
