If we are truly enlightened, shouldn't we ban all forms of discrimination (age, race, sex) when it comes to adoption? So many couples who want a child, so many thrown away babies...

How can you justify selective outrage regarding human discrimination? Is it wrong or is it not?

The other side of that hatch is a soylent green dispenser, innit?

The idea, which dates back to medieval Catholic churches, was instituted in Hamburg by the Sternipark charity organisation on April 8, 2000 to help prevent infanticide in reaction to the discovery of a dead infant at a recycling centre.

Hmmm...good to know that babies go out with bottles and cans and not with the regular trash.

Is it like a post box? Does someone come around at specified times during the day to collect the babies in a big bin? I would like to think so.

It is Germany, so do we separate the lights and darks?
Boys and girls?
Circumcised and Natural?

Hey, I deposited a couple of babies! They each came out 9 months later.

I'm assuming that would be the case. They're probably attached to rooms/spaces that are used regularly, especially if they are attached to a church. Wouldn't be surprised if a Church Lady specifically takes on baby duty when she volunteers.

Having a gender preference on an adopted child is rather sily and discriminatory unless maybe you already had a bunch of kids already and they was all boys or all girls and you was wanting one of the opposite

Age preference- well most people are gonna want a kid thats young enough to not know its adopted till its told it is. I don't see this as silly

Race preference- most people are gonna want a kid that looks as though it was physically possible it could be thiers. I don't see this as silly

AuralArgument: as an adopted child i have no problem with this.

As another adopted child I agree. I can't believe that the major complaint against these hatches is that they deprive a child of his right to knowing his heritage? what. tehfark. ever. I don't know my "birth" heritage and I don't care to because I have a perfectly workable adopted one. And, you know, I'm alive.

I think your idea on gender-preference is the current ethical guideline for sex-selective insemination. They can centrifuge sperm to separate the Y-carriers (lighter) from the X-carriers then squirt in the appropriate ones, to give you a pretty high chance of getting a child of your chosen sex.

Places that do that will typically only do it for family-balance reasons (e.g. you have one boy, want to have one girl, then stop having kids). I don't think any of them let you do it for your first child, or to get a child the same sex as all your current ones.

Age preference does cause some logistical problems - everyone wants newborns, so there aren't enough to go around, and if kids end up in the system past 5 or 6, it's terribly hard to find someone willing to adopt them.

Race preference goes both ways - some couples want a child of another race, for whatever reason. (Because it's easier to adopt from the Third World is one, of course).

I think this is a good thing however the biggest downside is the child may not know of any family medical history. What if the mom is diabetic or has a heart condition? Those types of things should be known. Why does it have to be anonymous anyway, is there some sort of shame in giving up a child? I would think it'd be something you would be proud of doing because you realize you aren't capable of taking care of the kid. And after 9 months carrying it the least someone could do is give it a good indicator of what sort of medical issues the child may have in the future.

They could get a little better with the diagram. It looks like they're trying to depict one of those hospital nursery cribs, but at first glance it looks like a garbage bin with the flared tops they have in parks, with the baby's head popping out, possibly being propped up by other discarded newborns.

Is that baby hatch a little sexist? Women wouldn't give up their babies. Only men do that. It's the men that drop off their unwanted baby rather than just leaving the house when the girlfriend gets pregnant. That illustration just looks a little masculine with his manly posture.
