The male runners were all found in the fetal position holding their testicles while shouting over and over "THE PAIN! THE PAIN!".

your mother never told you to not play outside when it is raining?

still, photo looks PAINFUL

You obviously have never been to Grinell, Iowa.

If only that was mentioned in the article.

FTA: The students found a nearby empty house to hide from the storm in, said Crawford.

Gott damn, that looks like it hurt!

Serves 'em right for going outside! Fortunately for me, I never engage in such dangerous activities any more.

Better than hiding on the roof.

Ral: They hid from a storm in a ditch? A ditch?

All I can think of was seeking the lowest point to avoid lightning. I assume that thought was going through their mind when they went for the ditch.

I'm using a Serifless font, so I initial misread the headline as "God presses 'smite' button over Lohan" and got my hopes up.

Damn.

Ral: They hid from a storm in a ditch? A ditch?

Yeah, good thing that they never thought of getting under one of those dense evergreen trees you can see in the photos within 50 yards of the incident.

I woulda dove under that tree in the pic, but that is just me.

Hailstorms can come on very quickly, even on days when the weather looks not so bad. I can definitely see where if a deluge of 1 inch hailstones started falling that you'd only have time to dive into a ditch.

// I'd also try to use the girl as an umbrella, but that's just me ...

I'll store this one in the "excuses not to exercise" bank.

I'm guessing they thought it was the beginning of a twister, so they decided to jump for the nearest cover.

I have! My alma mater. And yeah, there are plenty of places out there where a ditch is going to be your only option for shelter. Hope everyone there is ok.

Ral They hid from a storm in a ditch? A ditch?

I'm guessing that they were trying to get to low ground because of lightning. Although lightning tends to flow along the ground downhill once it hits, so that may not have been the absolute best idea.

/was once told to seek "lowest high point in the area." Not sure if that was good advice, either.

2010-04-07 04:13:15 PM
No, I'm thinking God pushed the "hurt" button. Had He hit "smite," lightning would have taken care of the job.

1"-1.5" sized hail? I'd risk sitting under a tree and getting fried from lightening vs the ditch.

Two years ago we were hit with a hail storm weilding chunks of frozen death about raquetball size (google it kids, it used to be a 'rad' sport). Totalled my car and took out the back window. On the plus side I got a nice check from the insurance, my rates went down since my car is uninsurable due to the totality, AND I get to drive a car that looks like a Titleist.

If I'm being pelted with huge hailstones, I'm heading for the nearest thing that may give me shelter, like that pine tree in the background.

www.kcci.com

The tree branches would be dense enough to deflect most of the hailstones. Fark the fears of lightning hitting the tree.
