Fark the 900 word article on spam, I just want to know if this Bob Liu guy is related to Lucy Liu, and could he get me some face time with her. If not, I will spam him with a 900 word rant.

I came to this thread all ready to rant about the *stupid headline* after reading the article, then noticed that it didn't read "RIAA vs Spam" after all.
Okay. Good headline.

ok. I hate spam as much as the next guy, and the guy after him. I unfortunately think that it is one of those things that the law should not be meant to take care of. I think it would be difficult to phrase anti-spam regulation that isn't potentially damaging to some class of rights.

Again, I hate spam. Maybe the law is not the thing to employ here.

Good Article, informative, and non-sensationalized. Most farkers will ignore.

I really don't care what is done to stop spam, as long as the people responsible have some form of excruciating genital torture applied to them. Over and over. In hell.

Wow. I never thought I'd live to see the day where I actually , sorta, kinda, liked the DMCA a little. If people really can use the DMCA to nail spammers then I'm not too sure whether I want it to go away (I feel so dirty now....)

I find it strange that he focuses on Sendmail, implicitly blaming it for a large amount of the spamming problem. The actions he describes aren't limited to Sendmail; practically every e-mail server that obeys the SMTP standard reacts in the way he describes.

He's blaming one specific application for what amounts to a failing of SMTP. That's the equivalent of blaming Windows for the SYN-flood problem of TCP/IP (though there are now very effective defenses against SYN-floods.)

As much as I am annoyed by SPAM I don't feel the governmetn and the dumbasshat politicians who we are always knocking here on fark should be the ones responsible for making any attempt to make it illegal. I consider it the same as snailmail junkmail. If I don't want it I'll throw it away. Easy as pie...it's easier and faster to tempty my inbox than to goto my mailbox then my waste basket in the kitchen. I feel that if we let the Washington dolts try to regulate the internet any further then we will be doing more complaining than rejoicing in the future. Look at how much we hate the DMCA now anyway. I say let the creativeness of the internet community and business deal with the issue, close the software loopholes and follow the supply and demand model that has driven this country's economy for the last 3 centuries.

Spammers should be in prison.
Anyone who says "just hit delete" should be their prison biatch.

Dawnrazor:
It was an example of spam in a forum based medium.

...yeah, that's the ticket.

We shouldn't ban SPAM. If we did, I'd have to stop corresponding with my friend Moshood.

The only true way to fight SPAM is to eat it.

Dawnrazor sure seems to know a lot about how spam is sent.....

GET HIM!! Tie him up!!

I'm new here, but I have a story.

Ok. So, I'm here at work, and, as usual, I check my email. I log onto my hotmail account, expecting 50,000 new messages, none of which are actually for me. Instead there are only 59 new messages, and I'm reading down the list, deleting as I go all the free barnyard porn and miracle hair restoration and free mortgage junk mail, carefully reading the names on each so as not to delete a letter from a friend. Half way down the list, There's an email from "Maryam". My heart nearly stops, and then begins to beat furiously. Maryam is my room mate. I gasp in excitement, much like a fish whose waterbowl has been upturned (that's how I get when I'm really excited). An email from Maryam? Can it be? Shall I read it now? No, perhaps I ought to wait, so I can savor her words in a more timely fashion. No, I cannot wait. I am about to click on this email from 'Maryam' when I read the subject line: "HUGE PENIS GARANTEED [sic]". Why is my favorite room mate writing to me about huge penii? Why did she misspell guarantee? How does she know that I need penis enlargement? Can she possibly see beyond my manly bragging to the deep-seated phallic insecurities in my heart? Perhaps she can. So many questions, so I click, hoping beyond hope that within this electronic correspondence I will find the answers I seek. The email opens. Apparently it was a different Maryam, one more interested in selling me penis miracle-grow than conversing in a friendly manner. Dammit.

I hate when they put the names of people I know on junk mail. What if 'Maryam' really could guarantee me a huge penis? Perhaps she has some secret method that she desired to bestow upon me in an email with a misspelt tag line. Now, when I do receive this huge penis guarantee from Maryam, I will delete it, thinking it is simply junk. All I do know is that if it weren't for junk mail, I would have a bigger penis right now.
