Right.......Next thing you'll tell me is he killed a cougar with a pocket knife, now that would be a good story. Someone should post a story like that.
2003-05-02 09:20:27 AM
Looks like Mr. Potatohead strikes again. He's lucky he can carry additional appendages in his ass.

Oh wait, maybe I should read the article
2003-05-02 09:32:01 AM

.....I say he deserves a trophy...

setting up a rope and then repelling with one arm sure wouldn't be easy ... wow --
2003-05-02 09:33:44 AM
Damn right!
2003-05-02 09:34:32 AM
At least he didnt have to give and arm AND a leg...
2003-05-02 09:35:14 AM

My Headline: Hiker Trapped By Boulder; Amputates Arm; Waves To Rescue Chopper With Bloody Stump

You decide.

Hope it wasn't a dull rusty blade.
2003-05-02 09:36:43 AM
Question: if he was in such good shape, why couldn't he move/shift a 200-lb. boulder?
2003-05-02 09:36:44 AM
Holy Shnikies!
2003-05-02 09:37:01 AM
What a great story to meet one-armed women
2003-05-02 09:37:05 AM
Hmmmmm sounds painful.

This guy has some brass in his shorts. Not to down size his toughness, this is not so rare for people. Do a search for "cut off own arm" and 7 articles pop up from farmers, lobstermen, and guys who get drunk and sleep with ugly chicks, all of whom have cut thier own arms off.
A humans will to live is tough to extinguish.
2003-05-02 09:37:41 AM
How could you get through the bone with a pocket knife?

What a great story to meet one-armed women

Yes, the glass is half-full, isn't it?
2003-05-02 09:38:20 AM
Whoops, wrong weight. A different news source listed the boulder as 200 lbs. I guess the weight goes up as the story gets passed around. By 4pm the boulder will have weighed the same as an M1A1 MBT.
2003-05-02 09:38:26 AM
Reminds me of that time when I got my nutz caught on a chain-link fence. .... .. ... . ... .. .. .....nevermind.
2003-05-02 09:38:38 AM
If he had just let go of the soda can, he would have been able to pull his arm out with no problem.
2003-05-02 09:38:42 AM
Because the boulder was 800-1000 pounds.
2003-05-02 09:39:18 AM

Oh, and Corvusnex - the boulder was estimated at 800 to 1000 lbs.
2003-05-02 09:39:24 AM

You don't go through bonje with your knife. You amputate at the elbow, cutting the ligaments that hold the upper & lower arm bones together.

Sux either way.
2003-05-02 09:40:31 AM
from the '93 story at the bottom of the page:

He applied a tourniquet, then carved around his lower leg, cutting beneath the kneecap, severing the muscles and tendons that attach the lower leg at the knee joint. He used hemostats from his fishing kit to close the severed artery and vein, then crawled back to his truck and drove to Alice.

who carrys hemostats in their fishing gear?
2003-05-02 09:40:33 AM
Holy macaroni! This guy is crazy!
2003-05-02 09:41:04 AM
damn this guy is the ultimate survior! amputating your own arm is bad enough but then rappelling and hiking afterwards???? *shudders and cringes at the thought*
2003-05-02 09:41:14 AM
Wow this guy cut his arm with his POCKET KNIFE!!
He his definitively an HERO.
2003-05-02 09:41:19 AM
Ah, you're right, Corvusnex - CNN is saying "200 lbs."
2003-05-02 09:41:24 AM
I'd hit it.

I like tough guys.

This will make a great made-for-TV movie next season.
2003-05-02 09:41:35 AM
I don't see how he could've repelled down the mountain like that, what with his HUGE FRIGGIN BALLS GETTING IN THE WAY!
2003-05-02 09:41:58 AM
Off topic: Which_One_Of_You_Started_The_Wretched_Long_Login_Trend_STOPIT That has to be the longest handle i have seen on Fark. I thought that there would have been a limit.

On topic:
Holy shiat! I don't know if I could have hacked my own arm off.
2003-05-02 09:42:13 AM
amazing!.... I don't even like it when i cut myself shaving
2003-05-02 09:42:14 AM
Good thing he wasn't , or he'd have an arm and both legs off and still be stuck under the rock.
2003-05-02 09:42:16 AM
Ralston was heard saying "...can somebody give me a hand?"
2003-05-02 09:42:28 AM
Can you imagine having to cut off your own arm with a pocket knife. Man that would suck!
2003-05-02 09:42:33 AM
i think there is also a pretty good chance that the bone may have broken through --

it would be easy to jettison the whole thing once the tissue had been cut.
2003-05-02 09:42:34 AM
Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow...Imagine slamming your arm in a car door but only a hundred times worse. Actually it sounds like if the boulder was on his arm that long he probably couldn't feel it anyway...but ow!!!
2003-05-02 09:42:45 AM
I wonder if your brain just stops sending pain at that point? I have trouble removing large splinters from my hand, I can't even imagine the type of pain it cause to systematically remove connections to your bone and skin to remove a part of your body.
2003-05-02 09:43:23 AM
I believe you can amputate your arm with a pocket knife, i.e. cut tendons, not bone. But coming to the realization that this is something you must do, after you run out of water, and your energy is running low after being in the woods for 3-4 days, now that is hard core. It hurt really bad when I removed my own in-grown toe nail with a pocket knife, I can't imagine cutting off an appendage.
2003-05-02 09:43:48 AM

Try going through your own femur with your swiss army saw. You may deserve a brass balls medal for that effort.
2003-05-02 09:43:59 AM
At last, a survival story I can relate to.

When I was fifteen, I got a sliver stuck under the skin of a finger tip, and I had to use tweezers to get it out. It was pressure-treated, too. Ached for days, and there was a time that I didn't think I would make it.
2003-05-02 09:44:57 AM
Cunning -- that's what I assumed when I first heard about it, that he cut where his arm was already crushed. After that long of a period of time it'd probably be dead and numb, but still...
2003-05-02 09:45:19 AM
I wonder who would vote him off the island.
2003-05-02 09:45:57 AM
I think the brain does stop sending pain signals or at least not as strong. When I broke my jaw I knew it hurt like hell but after an entire day I just wanted it fixed. That and I was drooling. Ick.
2003-05-02 09:45:57 AM
Pixelbend hemostats are good in a fishing kit for two reasons: 1) it can pull hooks out of fish when they are swallowed really deep, and 2) to hold your roach.
2003-05-02 09:45:58 AM
Pah. I real outdoorsman would have foraged for some root vegetables to accompany the severed arm, and rustled up a nutritious roast dinner.
2003-05-02 09:46:46 AM
Well, that's what you get with the power of powersauce bars.
2003-05-02 09:47:38 AM
You know, it's for situations like this that everyone is told to let people KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING. So you don't have to wait FOUR stinking days for your coworkers to say "hey, wonder where ol boy is this week" and call the cops...

Royally sucks though that he was found cause they were looking for him...if only he'd waited a little longer.
2003-05-02 09:47:42 AM
Pixelbend: Hemostat = Roach clip

(not that I know from experience....)
2003-05-02 09:48:29 AM
Hikers kick ass.
