Actually, it commemorates the victory of a small, ill-equipped Mexican army over French troops on May 5, 1862.

Like some defeat of the French couldn't be celebrated every day of the year.

"It's not a drinking holiday"

2003-05-02 01:11:08 AM
corona is the offical beer, eh?
a friend of mine once said he didn't trust any beer you had to add fruit to to drink it.
genius.

Ghost of Ebenezer Cooke has already won.

/packs up stuff, goes home.

2003-05-02 01:14:57 AM
oh joy. more anti-frenchism. because that'sok.
meh. it's still funny, though. dont get me wrong.

2003-05-02 01:15:03 AM
corona sucks. mexican holidays just aren't as exciting as irish and german holidays, and the beers just are no comparison.
on another ethnical note, i just saw an ad for this HITLER mini-series coming up in a couple of weeks on CBS. i never knew the NAZIS spoke the queen's english...i thought they spoke deutsch. just like hollywood to make historical movies with british accents to make them seem somehow regal

2003-05-02 01:15:35 AM
XX Especial is far better than Corona, as far as lighter Mexican lagers go. Same goes for Tecate.

Corona is piss.

2003-05-02 01:15:54 AM
Yay.

2003-05-02 01:16:09 AM
not here in denver.

2003-05-02 01:16:59 AM
Ah, you gotta love those uppity Hispanic rights groups who take offense at things like this. They hardly even celebrate this day in Mexico! I say we just ignore it and find out the true meaning of Boxing Day.

/some Hispanic dude

2003-05-02 01:17:07 AM
this is one thing the mexicans are certain of.

2003-05-02 01:18:46 AM
A defeat of the french is a day for celebration!

2003-05-02 01:20:21 AM
I'm from Mexico and we barely celebrate that day.
WTF is wrong with spics in the USA?
Bunch of dumbasses!

P.S. It's not farking Mexican independence day, dumbass!

2003-05-02 01:21:56 AM
This has nothing to do with the topic, but fark personals are just a really really bad idea. I don't want to see these people.. expecially that cold_brain dude.. no offence, but wipe next time dude. you missed a spot.

2003-05-02 01:22:12 AM
You're damn straight, WildMonkey! Now pass me some pan dulce. I'll have a concha.

"Hispanics try to reclaim Cinco de Mayo from drunk, white college students."

By "hispanic" I'm assuming they mean Mexican. I'm Puerto Rican and you better believe Cinco de Mayo is a drinking holiday to me.

2003-05-02 01:22:31 AM
I'm sitting here in my French Club t-shirt going "WTF?"

2003-05-02 01:23:32 AM
Bungle_jr you're expecting a bunch of Americans to sit down to the tube and actually *read* hours worth of subtitles? Ha, not in this life, pal.

2003-05-02 01:24:16 AM
Having a mother who lived in Mexico, any true Mexican knows how unimportant the day really is. It is a historical day, but not to the level of 9/16-17 [for Mexico] or 7/4 [for US], but if there is one thing I hate about humanity is how every holiday becomes an excuse to drink. I have nothing against some wine on a special occasion, but it is shocking to see people of all ages ruining their own person with beverages. I'd say they are abusing the drinks, but it's more like the drinks are abusing them: you are boring if you can only have fun when drunk.

2003-05-02 01:24:53 AM
Jose Cuervo has launched a big ad campaign with at least one Portland, Ore radio station and it is utter crap. It's a bunch of BS about Cinco de Mayo being renamed Cuervo de Mayo, extended several weeks, and celebrates the personal pursuit of happiness etc. Terrible

you seem to have misinterpreted my meaning. what i meant was these actors have thick BRITISH accents. this movie is made in AMERICA and is made about the rise (and i believe fall) of a GERMAN. i would rather hear an american accent, or even one of those overly stereotypical hogansheroes-style german accents.
i know the boobtubers of the usa wouldn't enjoy a movie they have to read. i know I don't like subtitles, because it is hard to watch the actors and read the bottom of the screen...

2003-05-02 01:29:12 AM
obligatory... France Surrenders...

Corona, the most popular Mexican beer in the United States, has previously pitched itself as the "drinko for Cinco." This year, it calls itself "the original party beer of Cinco de Mayo."

Corona? Just take a piss in a bottle and then drink it, save yourself a couple bucks. And what the hell is with the personals, the asian chick may have had a face like a pig, but the gay emo guy is a step in the wrong direction

2003-05-02 01:32:24 AM
Did somebody say drunk, white college students??
*grabs beer*
gimme a li'l while :-D

2003-05-02 01:32:28 AM
This is bullshiat. I'm from an area that has a desent mexican population and cinco de mayo was always about getting drunk. When I went to college and May 5th came around I always said, "cindo de mayo! let's get trashed!" only to have people look at me like I'm on crack. This was Iowa too. And you've heard how we like to party.

2003-05-02 01:33:14 AM
corona is crap.

try bohemia or negro modelo.

Technically, Hitler was an Austrian

Whoa, I just nitpicked a detail about Hitler. Does that make me a Nazi nazi?

2003-05-02 01:34:32 AM
I happen to like Corona a lot. Mexican beers are my favorites. I don't particualry like dark beers (too bitter usually, although some are good).

2003-05-02 01:34:54 AM
Bungle_jr Have you ever seen any of those old WWII movies like The Longest Day, or A Bridge Too Far? The Germans speak the Queen's English there too. It probably gets across the things they would have said better than some midwestern twang would, at least I think so.

2003-05-02 01:34:59 AM
and the reason I said cindo de mayo instead of cinco de mayo was beer. Maybe that's why everyone looked at me weird.

2003-05-02 01:36:16 AM
Why do we even celebrate this holiday in the US? It is just an excuse to drink. I did not know what it was until I moved to Arizona. I think I'm going to Dos Gringos just because of this article though.

Anyone else notice the astrology signs on the right? According to mine (Gemini), I "will enjoy the flexibility of using my Visa card at over 23 million locations throughout the world and online". Oh, and, uh, "Geese can be troublesome".

agreed. those personals things bear the potential for much harsh fark scrutiny. bono with a flava sava.

maybe drew should get some real-time voting on the pics.... for extra humiliation.

2003-05-02 01:37:35 AM
you are boring if you can only have fun when drunk.

wrong attitude. Whatever you can do fun sober, is more fun drunk.

2003-05-02 01:37:47 AM
"Every holiday of the year represents a promotion opportunity for brands and retailers," said Don Mann, marketing general manager at The Gambrinus Company, the San Antonio, Texas-based importer for Corona. With Cinco de Mayo, "everyone's tried to get in on it. The leading domestic brands, they all have Cinco de Mayo promotions."

Does this guy remind anyone else of a the Laramie Cigarette spokesman?

not this one....

The_Mad_Dutchman

factor it that alot of scandinavia and other northern european have germanic accents and tend to speak english more clearly.

2003-05-02 01:38:36 AM
one of the many things i don't miss about no longer listening to commercial radio is all of the retarded ads for corona beer that get played this time of year.

2003-05-02 01:38:44 AM
What day isn't a drinking holiday for drunk white college students? I've yet to find one....nothing is sacred in college!

Have you ever seen any of those old WWII movies like The Longest Day, or A Bridge Too Far?

I thought "A Bridge Too Far" was the best WW2 movie I saw before the "Band of Brothers" mini series. Those movies are unfreakingbelievable. Hands down my favorite of all time. I wept like a woman in so many parts.

2003-05-02 01:41:44 AM
if you think cinco de may is trivial you should compare it to a st. patrick's day.

here in southern california mexican holidays are celebrated more as they are on the other side of the border than is st. patrick's day in ireland (green beer, 'kiss me i'm irish' pins, etc.)

2003-05-02 01:42:26 AM
"A bridge too far" and "band of brothers" are a good way to kill a sunday. Some of the best movies ever.

2003-05-02 01:43:40 AM
What can you say, when it becomes an excuse for drinking excessively then the fight is already lost. Now then, drink up.

/'nother Hispanic dude.

2003-05-02 01:45:00 AM
The one day they get to be Mexican? I just got back from Mexico and didn't go a day without being offered alcohol from my fiancee's relatives. It's almost an insult to say no.

Give me 32 ounce cuagama any day.

2003-05-02 01:46:27 AM

Trying again...

2003-05-02 01:47:31 AM
If you don't like how we celebrate your foreign holiday, then go back to your own country.....

2003-05-02 01:48:09 AM
I think the whole taking it back is a good thing. I mean they never really celebrated this occation from what I have seen. But it is just sad to see silly college students looking for another reason to chug more beer. This is a college student speaking, and when I say college student I really mean it. I come from the land of ASU where most all the girls are loose and diseased, and it is sad to see your school end up on Playboys top 25 every year. I do enjoy a good beer on the weekend, but please! Yet again another mass marketed "americanized" holiday!
Also, I hate to break it to you but Corona is piss beer, and I agree with one of the people above. If you have to add fruit to it to make it go down, you need to drink something better.

2003-05-02 01:49:16 AM
And to top it off I will be at the San Jose parade this Sunday. Alcohol-free? There goes my reason for going.
