Come on, when you're coming up with a conspiracy theory you've got to keep with the times. Why use red tape when that fancy IR reflective tape has been in use for some time now? Also, GPS. ummm... Canadians speak English.... even the francophone ones... turns out the only thing worse than English Canadian television it's French Canadian television, so most Quebecker kids grow up watching American TV. But yes, the Canadian military does assist the US when they are in need. Hurricane Katrina, NORAD (Canada deployed fighters to Alaska a few years back when the F-15 fleet was grounded). Where these nutjobs are wrong is when they assume that the government they elect is going to somehow take over a country they already have.

I thought they were to keep the lines afloat if there was a tornado or something that caused it to fall in the lake when I lived in Minnesota. Now that I live in Colorado and they're over the valleys, I realize that they are so that pilots can see the HV line.

I miss listening to Art Bell Coast to Coast on the ride home from bars. It seems the crazies would hardly ever contradict each other so everybody's weird pet theory kept growing Katamari Damacy style into amazingly over the top crazy.

What makes me laugh is that occasionally, in the UK at least, you WILL see military-intended tactical-road signs...
The army used to use them as a tactical way of guiding large convoys in case individual trucks get separated etc.
Nothing worse, nothing more serious than that.
They rarely if ever deploy them anymore, since they're a pain in the ass to use, and invariably some little bastard steals a few, and you have to take them all down 48 hours after the convoy's passed etc.
GPS is a lot easier.
But, all the same, all the kooks think they're for invading armies, or guiding the aliens or some shiat. As opposed to just making sure the truck carrying 10 tons of god-only-knows-what stays on the right road and doesn't take a shortcut that leaves them stranded due to a bridge with weight-restrictions etc.

If this post doesn't give you an idea how old I am, nothing will. When I was a kid, there were still small circuses that would travel around and set up in small towns like the one I grew up in.

These circuses would use markers much like those described to make sure that all of the vehicles made it to the next destination. I have heard that some of the carnival companies that set up at county fairs and in the occasional parking lot still use something like this from time to time.

Obviously this is not the situation that is in the article, just thought that I'd share old memories.
