According to the article, Vanilla Ice is not blingin'.

I think they just wanted an excuse to print that picture.

2003-05-01 12:13:11 AM
ooh, this is priceless too:

...says jewelry designer Robert Verdi, a correspondent for "Full Frontal Fashion," which airs nationally on WE: Women's Entertainment. "I myself aspire to bling-bling."

2003-05-01 01:50:18 AM
Of course bling-bling will go in the OED. It's English.

2003-05-01 06:04:23 AM
My phone goes 'ring-ring'

Will they be putting that in too?

2003-05-01 06:06:50 AM
I nominate 'burninator' and 'crustard'

2003-05-01 06:11:41 AM
Wldncrzy14 beat me to it. Curses. That's the best part of the article.

2003-05-01 06:11:53 AM
Way back when, words used in songs were already IN the dictionary.

Isn't this just creative rhyming? "Duh, what rhymes with 'thing'? Duh I dunno man, I'll just make up a word"

Oh and CNN uses it on Headline news... It must be a real hip term.

How about:-

incarsinated
nukyular
revalence

If they're good enough for the leader of the free world, they're good enough for me.

2003-05-01 06:15:33 AM
Possible use of the Sad tag here?

2003-05-01 06:17:22 AM
Well, time to add them to the list.

2003-05-01 06:19:28 AM
always thought it came from meaning BMW in jamaica..

http://www.jamaicans.com/speakja/glossary.htm#b

Still makes more sence to me that it evolved from there...

Just my .02

Oh, I forgot "exemplorary". It's hard to keep up with dear old George sometimes.

I'm already so tired of everything hip-hop I could puke.

2003-05-01 06:26:36 AM
20/20:- I think the word you're looking for is "vomizzle"

GCD
2003-05-01 06:29:23 AM
Snoop Dogg should get his own dictionary and thesaurus.

2003-05-01 06:30:30 AM
President Bush had a little problem saying "rural" yeasterday.

It's funny cuz my wife has a hard time with that word also - and she purposely avoids using it... because I am a dick like that

2003-05-01 06:30:39 AM
Why not? The birth of new words and expressions constantly occur. It's a good thing. If you don't personally like this one then don't use it.

2003-05-01 06:32:54 AM
And "yeasterday" may not be in your dictionary - unless you have a special baker's edition

2003-05-01 06:35:41 AM
"The birth of a new expression"

Now that you put it like that... I feel so much more enlightened.

If only I could use this term and not have people look at me like I had a booger on my lip or something...

2003-05-01 06:36:33 AM
I, for one, will not rest until the terms "gangsta lean", "pimp-juice", and "fo sheezy" make it in.

/sarcasm

side note: I wonder what the example will be...
"Mark was happily rockin' his bling bling at the school dance."
--shudder--

2003-05-01 06:43:25 AM
Or possibly, "Mark's bling-bling was nowhere to be found after the drive-by shooting occurred..."

2003-05-01 06:44:19 AM
Or even...

"After Mark's rap career took off, the bling bling was plentiful."

2003-05-01 06:48:31 AM
So a new expression is only acceptable if it's mainly used by white people?

/playing the race card! woo!

2003-05-01 06:48:46 AM
Well it might go like:

Check out her bling bling!

or

You got your bling bling on, it's nice.

2003-05-01 06:50:11 AM
What's asinine about a real word that real people use being in a real dictionary?

2003-05-01 06:51:43 AM
OT

That personal of the day, syntax-feline thinks Kids are sexy. What a perv.

2003-05-01 06:53:16 AM
Ricardobaltazar, even better: underaged white trash boys.

2003-05-01 06:53:39 AM
Cola

Actually we will always talk differently and create new meanings to commonly used words. Or take a common word and add things to it. Like Fo Shizzle my Nizzle.

It's actually flattering when it crosses over(to me anyway).

2003-05-01 06:58:18 AM
No race bias intended - if my 6-year old uses a nonsensical word like this - I would hastily set him straight...

I guess that makes me "old-school" or something old-fashioned like that.

I still correct people for saying "fixin' to" and other ridiculous phrases

2003-05-01 07:03:29 AM
Sweet Jebus. I thought British had more sense than that

2003-05-01 07:05:44 AM
Ken_Iseeum

It's not old-school, it's the right thing to do. He's 6. He needs to learn english as his first language and can mix in the slang LATER.

I didn't have anyone to teach me grammar until I changed schools. I was 10th grade. I learned stink, stank, stunk is not correct. It still haunts me till this day because even though I'm smart, my grammar made the difference in college between a B+ and an A+.

2003-05-01 07:07:09 AM
I thought it meant money. Shows how much I give a crap about hip hop.

2003-05-01 07:07:29 AM

And this rates as news because...

I see the decline of Western civilization is proceeding on schedule.

2003-05-01 07:10:22 AM
Rhiannon

Bling Bling is basically anything that shines or is shiny.

2003-05-01 07:14:12 AM
Oh and I don't really mind this term going into a dictionary (though I'll never this word). I like to keep an open mind on new words being formed. Well heck just look at Fark. I see "necicary" and "knoledge" used a lot so new words are being formed all the time.

2003-05-01 07:15:50 AM
Should be a "use" up there somewhere I suspect.

2003-05-01 07:16:05 AM
It doesn't mean money?
what does it mean then?

(Clueless)

2003-05-01 07:16:10 AM
I'm shocked no one has mentioned the Icy Hot Stuntaz yet.

2003-05-01 07:16:29 AM
I wonder if the French will add "le bling-bling" to their dictionary ?

2003-05-01 07:16:43 AM
Thanks Farkin_lady

2003-05-01 07:17:01 AM
To me it seems like the Dictionary folks are catering to a tabloid style of business to sell more dictionaries.

But I guess any word used in *ahem* mainstream society - should be found in a reputable reference source...

Doubt it, Ken. Have you ever seen an OED set? Very large, very expensive. Tracing the origins of every (I think) English word.

/mini-rant on how cool the OED is

2003-05-01 07:22:46 AM
Bling Bling!

2003-05-01 07:24:23 AM
Bling Bling

Phear my mad html skillz!

2003-05-01 07:24:59 AM
The great irony is people who use this term would never open a dictonary.
