(Mercury News)   75 years after its inception, Monopoly remains as fun as ever. Especially when it is played on a larger than life Monopoly board by people wearing hats symbolizing each play piece. I GET TO BE THE CAR   (mercurynews.com) divider line 164

The rules say that if you land on an available property and don't buy it, it goes up for auction.

Raise your hand if you follow this rule when you play.

If your hand is not up, you are a filthy communist.

udeng01: No love for the Horse? That was my piece.

Anyone ever play with real money? We used to play with $1 Monopoly money = $0.01 of real money. So landing on Boardwalk with a hotel would cost you $20 for example. Everyone bought in with $15 to start with and contributed another $10-$20 for the bank depending on the number of players. Same as a $40 poker game.

Why not just put all that money in a pot, play with normal monopoly money, and then give the pot to the winner?

You can all take your cars and irons and hats and battleships. I got the Scottie Dog.

Of course, it's really fun when you put the dog in the car, and balance the hat on him.

===============================================

Free parking just having the fees from the cards is ok, because it's never very much money anyway. [Though, yes, it's better to not have anything]

Some people I used to play with (I was very young at the time and didn't know any better) added $100 to free parking everytime someone passed go.

I realize now (that I'm not incredibly young) why those games were really terrible :)

cmoreland: Game takes farking forever to finish. FOREVER!!

A real game of Monopoly takes 45 minutes or less to finish. It's when people add stupid "house rules" to the game (usually because it's the only way to get people that suck at it to play) that it takes forever to play.

2010-03-28 08:07:02 PM
After a couple of decades, a *few* pieces were invariably missing so instead of the iron and the dog, we had a chutes and ladders person and a rubber smurf. Other cards made their way in also. The Uno card trumped everything and won the game no matter how much money the other players had. And if you landed near the troll doll, you had to answer 3 riddles before you collect the $200.

.....Or was that only in my house?

/no love for the wheelbarrow???

I had a friend when I was a teenager who came up with an idea of making a game based on monopoly with landmarks from different cities etc... Hasbro or Parker Brothers or whoever finally did that. I have the Vegas and Disney versions as well as the original. My friend Robb got robbed.

My biatch first wife took that, and many other things from me in the divorce. It was all worth it except my grandpa's flag from his funeral.

Dude, the Free Parking Jackpot rule was the bane of my Monopoly playing existence.

:-/

I know what you mean. Games with a $500 reward for landing on Free Parking always go at least an hour longer.

Ou Contraire! The $500 free parking bonus always meant that my opponent would land on Free Parking on three consecutive laps and then on an unowned Boardwalk and Park Place, which would then have hotels before I'd even managed to assemble a complete color set.

That was possibly the quickest monopoly game I've ever played, and I've adamantly vetoed free parking bonuses ever since.

ramen_for_all: /no love for the wheelbarrow???

Last time I played was Drinking Monopoly. (Drink when you land on other's properties, shots per house, modified some of the chance and community chest cards to include drinking rules too. If you haven't tried it, do so.) Anyway, the wheelbarrow was what you became when you needed help rolling the dice or counting money. After that game you were out.

GoodOmens: I'd always enjoy putting hotels up on Baltic / Mediterranean ave and pretending like I was a slum lord.

Mr. Ramen is a Monopoly fanatic and gets very competitive and dickish when he plays. I hate the game (despite my previous post) so one day I gave in and played a game. I bought up all the cheap properties and quickly put up hotels. In essence, a slum lord. I won within a half hour. He stopped asking me to play after that.

One should never put hotels on Mediterranean and Baltic.

Just four houses each.

Houses are like spice.

He who controls the spice controls the universe.
