Empty nutshell, I'm guessing now...

I'd never heard of Mike Penner until a local fish hack wrote an article after he committed suicide. Tragic story really.

You know, transgender folks seem to spend their lives feeling like something is wrong. And in the end I have to wonder if they ever feel right. I suspect that they go through the change and find it doesn't make that much of a difference and that they never, ever feel quite right.

All broad strokes, of course.

Christina Kahrl is one of the best damn sportswriters in the biz.

There is a woman, Christina Kahrl, that writes brilliantly for Baseball Prospectus, and she used to be a dude. Her analysis on all things trade and financial in baseball is top-notch. I'd hate to not have access to her work because of something like in TFA.

Poor fella. When he finally went out as his female self, some other transsexuals got annoyed with him being too girly and other folks said he was too ugly/manly to pass as a woman. Too bad he couldn't develop a "fark [em all" belligerent attitude. That kind of thing can work wonders for not wanting to off yourself.

I went to a shrink once and he said: "Your problem is obvious: You are a woman, but trapped in a man's body!"

"My god, Doc!" I replied. "Isn't there anything you can do?"

"Fortunately for you, the woman in question is also a lesbian, so you ought to make out all right."

That attitude tends to get " 'em all" after you, though... especially when you'r that far outside the norm.

At my last place of employment, we had someone exactly like that.
Dude went through the whole counseling/hormones/cutitoffame transition, and was 100% into females.

From my link above, her take on it:

"Maybe trying and failing to be Christine Daniels," says Kahrl, "killed Mike Penner."

You know there are people that are significantly more disfigured than simply having mixed up genitals and they manage to lead healthy productive lives. Perhaps the issue is more about his inability to accept himself and worrying too much about what others think than any "body issues".

That fear of what other people think is exactly why transsexuals are not crazy. They want to be female and believe they are with all their heart. Most have known since they were kids and were punished for it. They hide it as long as they can until they change or kill themselves. They don't want to be a freak. They want to be a normal woman and live a dull boring life like everyone else. The real problem is our bigoted society who doesn't understand or care.

It was like a great big door opening for me... Town Hall... after that concert, I realized I wanted to spend as much of the rest of my life as possible playing folk music with these gentlemen and I wanted to spend all of it as a woman. I came to a realization that I was - and am - a blonde, female folk singer trapped in the body of a bald, male folk singer and I had to LET ME OUT or I WOULD DIE.

/When you put it that way, it's almost poetry.

There was a story a while ago where a woman felt "wrong" because she had legs. Her image of herself as "right" was that of a woman with no legs, so she tried to bath in ice until they had to be amputated. The general consensus seemed to be that she had some kind of mental issue and shouldn't have been allowed to disfigure herself.

Now, I'm going to get called a bigot and all sorts of crap, but how is this much different?

pervvywanker: You mean he had a Lopitoffamy and THEN had an Addadictomy? FARK, I'm confused.

I suspect he never had the genital surgery, but had done all but that, and then reversed. But, dunno.

ElBarto79: Perhaps the issue is more about his inability to accept himself and worrying too much about what others think than any "body issues".

Or possibly that PLUS body issues, but yeah. There's a reason for the "real life test" and it's not only about "passing" or not.

Just randomly I've happened to know a few successful transsexual people, and one guy who THOUGHT he was transsexual, but wasn't, and was rejected from going on. That latter guy I've long since lost contact with, so who knows if he eventually transitioned or what but even just from my POV, guy had some serious identity issues that were not going to be solved by a sex change, and to their credit, the sex change people recognized that fact.

All that said, I'm sure it's harder to go through the transitioning and NOT really "pass," though. The one transwoman I know, no one would ever guess her history unless she told them - the only reason I know is that I knew her when she was a he.

On the other hand, in my town are at least two guys who dress up as women out in public without really proclaiming anything, they are who they are, which is really obviously "guy in a dress" but people mostly seem to treat them as women when they're in the role.

The world is interesting, I guess.

Google around "transabled." Those people often make comparisons to sex-change, it riles up a lot of transsexual people, the wank can get lulzy.

That's horrible. How can anyone make jokes about the tortured life this person had to lead? I never understood that. At our office we have a client who is transgender m-f. She is always excited to come in and talk to the girls in the office about her new purse, her boob job, her highlights. Some of the guys make fun of her and I think, how dare you behave that way when you have no idea of the personal trials that person has had to go through? Can they even imagine living their lives as though they are not themselves?
