yeah, it's real hard to remember Shamrock Shakes when the 10 McDonald's within 5 miles of me have Shamrock Shake posters all over their windows and signage in the parking lot

I don't think Shamrock Shakes count, aren't they just mint flavored? Mint (nearly) icecream isn't that wild.

That gives me a bigger nostalgia bomb than purple ketchup.

Barakku: I don't think Shamrock Shakes count, aren't they just mint flavored? Mint (nearly) icecream isn't that wild.

But why is mint coded green? That was an artificial coloring decision made so long ago that people just find it normal, but actual handmade mint stuff is just WHITE.

Candy canes aren't green.

To me, green means melon flavored. That's partly because melons (musk melons, honeydew) ARE green, but also because in Japan melon junk food stuff is similarly coded green with coloring even if it's not naturally colored. The green candies are melon flavored.

The corn chips and fruit in TFA are at least naturally that way.

Back to food coding, there's always the question of blue. So often it's raspberry - why? Surely because red is already taken (for cherry). Though when it comes to shave ice, blue can sometimes mean pineapple (again - why? Because yellow is taken for lemon) so you have to be cautious.

Didn't they also have green ketchup once? Also, carrots come in several colors naturally.

Oh, yeah, Shamrock Shakes, I remember those. From two weeks ago. Good times.

Because it comes from leaves?

No. You might be thinking of green ketchup. Which is highlighted in the article.

The purple potatoes and yellow carrots are "heirloom" natural breeds, not scientists' creations.

Maybe it's because mint plants are green?

Mint used to grow wild at my grandparent's place. And if you ever mowed over it, you could smell it a mile away.

I love blue tortilla chips. I didn't see anything in that article that was a major problem, particularly the heirloom vegetable things. If they grow that colour, then great. No so much a fan of artificially coloured stuff.

/Save the blue chips for me!!!!!

silentneep: Because it comes from leaves?

Sure, but plenty of spices are leaves and they're not all green, AND when you steep them for the stuff, it's not green.

Mint candy made at home is not green.

If it isn't gin, vermouth, and olive, it ain't a damned martini. It's a drink in a cocktail glass.

That's not a real picture, but it was a real thing. The problem with it was, it didn't come out a pleasant shade of green at all. It looked like mud-spinach puree.

I can assume that you've never seen a peppermint plant. Hint: it's green.

Well, fine. I do remember that the real deal was more muddy than bright green. So the Worth 1000 is probably a `shop, after all.

Fine. Be that way.

The Green and Purple Ketchup that I used to buy looked more like this:

than the above.

it didn't taste any different, it freaked people right the fark out, and the price difference was nil.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the oldest varieties of carrots are white or yellow. I know I've seen both, along with deep red. And no, I'm not talking about parsnips.

Saw some purple radishes at Central Market the other day.

And potatoes come in hundreds of varieties. Here's a good source for descriptions of them. (new window)

Oh, and cheese is made from milk, therefore should be white
