That is cool. Although I suspect a plane with jet engines on it is the last place you want to be when you see a volcano.

Seriously. They were lucky they weren't a little bit closer. Hopefully they make a point not to fly over Montserrat anymore.

I'll take my chances in a plane over the chances in the crater.

Short of the space shuttle in orbit I can't think of a safer vehicle to get away from it.

Passengers rushed to the side of the jet to snap the cloud from the Soufriere Hills volcano, causing the plane to bank left and begin a slow but perpetual downward spiral. Not unlike The Three Stooges, whooping was heard as the plane made it's unscheduled descent. There were no survivors.

If only the giant plume turned into a hand and tried to grab the plane.

And the ash could has weird magnetic properties too. Lots of lightning and it can screw with all the avionics.

Does anyone know if this is from the Feb 5 eruption or the Feb 11 eruption? I'd guess the latter but it would be cool to confirm.

As for flying over Montserrat, this volcano has been pretty active for fifteen years so I imagine they stopped doing that a while back.

Volcanoes cause global warming and must be stopped. I call for a volcano capping tax and all resources need to be put forth to find a way to permanently cap them all or put filters on them to remove all particulates from their plumes.

How are we tools? Just pointing out the hypocrisy of the left. If you want to stop global warming, volcanoes should be number one the list of things to control. But, volcanoes don't have any money and don't watch tv, so the libs have no idea how to control them.

2010-03-27 01:15:08 PM
How are we tools?

If the volcanoes jumped off a bridge, does that mean you have to, too?

Comparing apples to oranges, blaming strawman-liberals for the difference, and getting whiny in a thread about a funny volcano story -- that's what makes you a tool.

Fine, I'll bite. Doesn't volcanic debris in the atmosphere actually cause global cooling? Some sulphuric compound (SO2 maybe?), but I'm too lazy to look it up. So I guess I just proved conservatives are dumb, liberals are dumb, and independents are lazy.

volcanoes cause global cooling. We need a volcano accelerating tax to help pay for increasing volcanic eruptions. It is the best way to stop global warming.

It's more complex than that. A large enough ash cloud could cause cooling (it has several times in the past) by reflecting sunlight. But in addition to the particulates in the ash, eruptions also release gasses, including CO2. The CO2 can trap heat, causing warming.

Ash settles relatively quickly, as moisture condenses around the particles and falls as rain or snow, so that effect is usually temporary (duration depends on the size of the eruption). By contrast, CO2 is removed from the atmosphere more slowly, largely by aspiration of plants (among several other sources), so that effect can be much more lasting.

The problem with the popular attempts to dispute climate research is that they tend to be overly simplistic. Global climate is an almost unimaginably huge chemical reaction, and simple models aren't really very useful.

But that's OT for this thread about a cool picture.

I am. I usually get the window seat, and I would've made a note somewhere along the line of being able to see space from my window, seeing as how I enjoy most things space.

2010-03-27 02:08:11 PM
Volcanic eruptions cause cooling. Some -- those that spew ash -- cause less cooling than the ones that spew SO2. Ash settles out of the atmosphere quickly. SO2 lingers for a couple of years.
