To be honest, Subby, that 47,000 miles of concrete is in pretty bad shape and will cost more to repair than a memorial would cost to build...

And...?

It was not meant to last forever, nor was it meant to be used until it wore into uselessness. Like any other infrastructure, it has to be maintained.
Instead of imagining the cost to repair it, imagine the cost of trying to do without it.

Know how I know you're Gehry? Because your design calls for monumental columns and large memorial tapestries of woven stainless steel.

Wait, Gehry's doing this project? I'm pretty sure he must have fought the need to do his squiggly shapes.

-Willingly led an invading army for the ultra progressive FDR.

" Ultra Progressives leftists ( same thing ) " opposed WW 2. FDR insisted we get into it.

FDR also put Japanese Americans in camps during the war. It was the only choice he could have made since he didn't have the benefit of history his critics have ( you know, " Ultra Progressives leftists " ).

In other words, the fact that you actually think FDR was an " Ultra Progressive " makes you a total failure of historic proportions.

How far have the Democrats fallen since the days of FDR? FDR wouldn't even make through a Dem primary today.

What's wrong with neoclassical? Why the hell do we need to make shiatty modern styled monuments? Triumphal arches and fluted columns are always classy and stone lasts a very long time, even longer than stainless steel.

I'd just like to say that the Eisenhower Expressway sucks ass. In many ways it is worse than the Dan Ryan, which also sucks ass. Thank God I no longer work on the south side which necessitated me driving on both of those aggravating "expressways". The worst was coming home when I was trying to get from the Dan Ryan to the Eisenhower. Assjacks all over the place trying to get around the traffic and sneak in line. Screw you! It's time for following the car in front of me by two inches. It would be called drafting if we were going more than 5 MPH. No, I don't care if you honk your horn and gesture at me. I'm not letting you in because you are driving like an arrogant ass and I hope everyone behind me is tailgating to mess up your master plan.

This rant really does not have to do with the article though.

Shouldn't monuments reflect the society they are made in and reflect its needs? That was Maya Lin's idea with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and along with being the most visited monument in DC, it's easily the most emotionally affecting.

GlennBeckbot troll is a troll.

Srsly, though, is EVERY two-term preznint going to get a monument, regardless of visible accomplishments? Ike was a successful general, but pretty much a snoozy caretaker for eight years in the White House. Where's Truman's monument? That dude saved freakin' Europe from Communism/starvation.

The main memorial building (the large boxy structure behind the outdoor gathering area) is much more in line with the neoclassical architecture of D.C.

It's old, and frankly done to death. Also done wrong. If the Greeks or Romans saw what we consider reproductions of their architecture? They'd facepalm. Hard. And that's before they saw we use temple architecture for bank buildings. That, yeah, that would upset them.

Hunh. I didn't even know they were working on a memorial for Ike. Not sure he really merits one as a POTUS, but as a general and all-around American, sure.

Oddly enough, I am reading a book about the history of memorials in DC right now. Good read if that sort of thing interests you. Check it out. (new window)

Agreed.

Perhaps his most lasting positive legacy as President, was appointing Earl Warren to the Supreme Court, which he thought was a mistake, and warning people about the military industrial complex.

1. Declared racial discrimination a national security issue, got the ball rolling on civil rights legislation, forced the integration of schools.

2. Interstate Highway System

3. Eisenhower Doctrine - stated that the US would used armed force to counter aggression from any communist country. This one might get a little iffy, since it led us into Vietnam, but it was an important policy decision at the time.

What the hell do we need any more monuments for? Aren't we spending enough without wasting more money on trivial crap like this? Especially when it does not serve anywhere CLOSE to a majority of citizens? I'm not a fan of the HCR crap we just went through, but at least (theoretically) it serves just about everyone...

D.C. was a swamp when we first started building there. Nothing has changed.

Not every president needs a memorial. If Ike gets one, we should make room by tearing down half of FDR's (who, incidentally, said during life that he didn't want a memorial).

Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln were enough. Every president since has been an assclown. Yes, even whichever one you are thinking of.

America, cast of thousands. We don't have a problem that can't be dealt with a home grown example of what the enemies of America wish they had. Whether it be the brain trust back in the 30's going "where can we find a guy with a german jew sounding name to promote to the top of the military?" Well sir, there is young Eisenhower. He's got potential, boss.

Flash forward 70 years. "We got us a mooslimb problem. Anyone got any suggestions for an up and coming pseudo mooslimb we could hold out as the example of secular mooslimbism?" Well, sir, there is that good looking, articulate community organizer in Chicago. Get this. His middle given name is Hussein. We think he will play ball. "I tell you what, let's give him the 2004 keynote speech at the dem convention and see how he does." Yessir! Consider it done sir!
