It would be enclosed in a glass structure? I want tours of the interior, damnit.

should be easy as long as they have some snazzy graphics in the cockpit

I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.

It belongs in a museum!!

2010-03-26 03:18:06 PM
I think they should just fly it in low, without any pre announcement, and have it trailed by a couple of F-16's. What possible misunderstanding could there be about that?

/Aisle seat, please

From what I have heard Chuck E Cheese has purchased the Space Shuttle. It will cost you 25 trillion tickets. That is alot of Skiball but I think it is worth it.

This is a fully reasonable request. I'd support it.
However, I think the shuttle should be standing on end right in the middle of Times Square, fueled, and ready for launch at a moments notice. The vapor coming off the O2 and H2 Tanks would be neater than that stupid steaming Cuppa Soup or Maxwell House ad. And instead of the ball dropping on New Years Eve, we could have a proper T-10 countdown to launch.

2010-03-26 03:22:10 PM
The Intrepid should get one. That would really add a "cherry on top" to an already awesome museum.

Flying a space shuttle is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

2010-03-26 03:23:26 PM
a better place for it would be rocket park by the ny hall of science.

David O. Selznick is on line two. He, and I, like your idea.

I do have to admit when I first heard of this, my first thought was giving the thing to the Hayden Planetarium.

Absolutely not!

While the Space Shuttle was far from a great program, it doesn't deserve to be denigrated by being associated with such a failure as the Decrepid museum.

One only needs to look at their handling of the Concorde they got to know this is a bad idea, let alone what they've done to the ship her self.

2010-03-26 03:28:56 PM
Forget the glass enclosure. We should spend the 40m dollars to fuel it up and send Chuck Schumer into outer space!!!

With no space helmet!!

One needs to go to JSC. One needs to go to KSC. One needs to go to the Smithsonian to sit next to Enterprise.

Everything else is an insult.

Too bad his idiot boss cancelled future moon missions.

2010-03-26 03:32:00 PM
Well - they landed a C-130 on an aircraft carrier one time, Sully landed a plane in the Hudson, and Nicola Cage jumped off the thing and it survived; so I guess they land a shuttle on the Intrepid. Though it will be tight and they may have to move all the other stuff off the deck for a while.

How about we just keep flying them? We still need to shuttle payloads right?

2010-03-26 03:35:53 PM
Yeah, because this worked out so well when they tried it with Air Force One...

The Smithsonian will likely give up Enterprise and take one of the others. Evergreen Air & Space Museum in Oregon is trying to get Enterprise. They're the same place that got the Spruce Goose, and already have a spot for it.

2010-03-26 03:37:03 PM
Or I guess we could just fire up a titan rocket every time the ISS toilet gets clogged.

If they keep flying them, we'll eventually be able to put a shuttle museum in all 50 states.

2010-03-26 03:37:48 PM
The Evergreen Air and Space Museum in OR is trying to get one as well. We were there in the Fall and the map of the "space" building has a spot lined out for the shuttle. I'd like to see them put it next to the Spruce Goose, just to reinforce how huge the Goose is.

What have they done bad with the concorde? I mean, I remember when they hit it with a truck, and knocked the nose off, but that was an accident and because they had to relocate it while they re-did the intrepid.

Its a great museum, especially for kids, and the space shuttle there would be awesome.

I'm also proud to see there are some curtis sliwa fans in here.

From the comments:

"Nothing like giving the baby a nice lollipop after dropping it on its head. Hopefully the people of NY will remember that this disaster was the man behind the curtain in the Senate, whispering demands into Harry Reid's ear. In fact, he has been chosen as the next in line for when Reid gets defeated. You can bet your bottom dollar that NoBama will make sure this happens as thanks for helping orchestrate the heathcare debacle."

And while politically Schumer drives me nuts, i read an interview with him a few years ago in, I think the new yorker, which I walked away from feeling like "this guy really does care, and knows most of his games are just that, games that he needs to do to get certain peoples attention." For someone I disagree with so much on so many things, I really couldn't help but liking the guy after reading it, and actually would probably vote for him.

I love the Intrepid, in a city full of museums it is definitely in my top 5, along with the MOMA, the Whitney, Brooklyn Museum and Natural History.

Outside of class trips do people still visit that place? While it does sound like a better place, the location is very remote compared to other places that tourists in NYC visit while the Intrepid is near the mid-town Manhattan area.

Just don't let them end up like the Buran shuttles that are rotting in the Moscow suburbs. They should go somewhere that will keep them protected from the elements.

Total longshot, but there is a last ditch bill pending in congress that could keep them flying a couple more years.

Bullshiat. And if the Smithsonian already has the enterprise why do they need another? Other than the Smithsonian, none of the other places mentioned get as many visitors as the Intrepid so actually putting it at any of those other places is more of an insult.

I read somewhere that either Discovery or Atlantis is already slated for the Smithsonian, and the Enterprise will be loaned to some other institution to make room at the Udvar-Hazy center.

Imagine the lines... imagine the interior after a few million walk throughs in a week... poor shuttle. Though really there isn't much to walk through, it's just a biggish cockpit with extra seating.

New Yorkers are greedy. Times Square? You already have the Cuppa Soup and the big Maxwell House ads, have you ever heard of sharing? I propose...Utah! Because, uh, that would be cool.

All in favor? Dang, that's not very many hands.

I say bring a return module on the last flight, fly the shuttle up to parking orbit, and then take the module home. Leave the orbiter as an exploration destination for future space tourists, like shipwrecks are for divers today.

/feasibility is for chumps

General neglect.

From failing to keep the aircraft clean while it was on the barge, to the nose incident, to not building the glass enclosure they talked about now that she's on the pier.

The Concorde is on loan from British Airways, and they don't like things emblazoned with their logo looking shabby.

2010-03-26 04:06:54 PM
Well if there's one thing New York has a problem with, it's getting tourists to visit. There's a complete lack of things to do or see when you go there.

Heaven forbid they put it somewhere like the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum, I mean Dayton Ohio has more tourism than it can handle as it is, comparatively there would be no beneficial impact to that community.

The US really only consists of NY, CA, TX and "the south" anyway.

For Schumer to see the event he would have to have his head pryed out of Reid's ass.
